I am reading No Easy Way Out by Dayna Lorentz. I have read pages 341-440 this week. The prompt I have chosen this week is “How the setting affects the plot of the story.” The setting affects the plot of the story by the Senator’s note in her office revealing the whole endemic in the mall, the True Laboratory explaining the Senator’s thoughts and frustrations during the mall endemic, and the machines of the True Laboratory that branches the plot off into a new story.

The protagonists enter the room and into the “True Laboratory.” Upon walking in, they see a diary with circled passages, each documenting the stages of the infection and attempted vaccination. It claims that her father was a victim of cancer and died, and she wasn’t going to let something of the same nature happen to her mother. Later on, the writing tells how she was becoming less and less hopeful for the cure to work, and began blaming herself and slowly lost her good self-image. The Senator explains how she believes her daughter is disappointed with her profession and personality, and begins to give up with her countless experiments and machines. The True Laboratory extends on leading to many strange machines and screens. Quotes to support this are on page 398: “I could barely read the book anymore because of the water flooding my eyes. I closed it and sat down, hands covering my face. How could it end like this?” and on page 405: “‘We were wrong this whole time?’ Ryan uttered. ‘Oh my god.’ He mouthed. ‘Oh my god.’” These quotes demonstrate that much like the Senator’s office, the True Laboratory shows the whole incident accounted by the Senator, and shifted the gears of the plot and changed the minds and opinions of the characters. This refreshes the story, and transforms the book into what may seem like an entirely new one, while still taking place in the same setting. There will definitely be conflicts that will result from the True Laboratory and will continue on the plot, but with the new
