About a Boy Who Isnt

...Bonny Frescura #832693 Psychology of Human Sexuality – PSY 5040 Kean University – Oct. 7, 2013 Article: ABOUT A BOY WHO ISN’T A while ago I prepared a presentation about transgender kids for a certain psychology class. This is a topic that has always been interesting to me because of the depth of the psychological dilemma these kids have to endure every day of their lives. The pain and the struggle are unimaginable and the gender identity disorder is a topic that deserves all the research and attention to help these kids to find their true identity. Aside from the usual obstacles that transgender kids have to go through, this particular kid who is a male to female transgender, experiences the stigma of having a gender identity disorder inside of a traditional Latino family. As a Latina, I could agree with the statement of “M” when he expressed that his family would rather see him as a boy than a lesbian. Latino families are very traditional and have a harder time than other families understanding homosexuality and gender identity disorders. The main problem for the understanding of these issues lies on misinformation. Often parents, educators and other administrative members at schools have not been trained to face the challenge of having to accommodate a student that wishes to cross-live. For a parent is even more difficult because they have to face and accept the “death” of their son or daughter and support their child to become the person they want to be. One thing that...

What Faith and What It Isnt

...“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can move mountains”. “The just shall live, and live by faith”. “For by grace you have been saved through faith”. These are just a few sayings of scripture that I have heard echoed through my entire upbringing from church members in my community. I’ve grappled with what the meaning of faith is and how it works in its many facets of interpretations. In the book “Dynamics of Faith” Paul Tillich addresses faith on what is and what it isn’t. One way for me to really understand a concept is to fathom what the concept is not. Combing through the course reading I was able to accumulate what faith is not from 3 key distortions Tillich brings out about faith. In the Intellectualistic Distortion of faith he says, “The most ordinary misinterpretation of faith is to consider it an act of knowledge that has a low degree of evidence”. From this concept I gather that many deduce faith down to merely having a cerebral belief or knowledge, rather than faith itself. Trust in an authority is one way a person can gain knowledge of faith. Many will accept a proposition as faith given by an authority such as a minister or pastor with little to no evidence. Oftentimes our trust in an authority would be just enough to believe. Without this trust we hold for good authorities, our awareness and perception would be significantly smaller. With that said, acceptance of a proposition validated from an authority is not faith. Tillich barrows...

Smoking Isnt Really Cool

...The claim of the ad is that smoking is cool, that it’s what people want to do. If you do it, your social status will begin to climb. If you were to smoke you will become the bad boy that everyone wants to be. Smoking will change your whole persona from geek to sheik. The ad depicts camel Joe, the iconic front man for the camel crusade since the brand began. In the picture he looks tuff, cool a real man’s man. His shirt cuffed with a pack of cigarettes rolled in. He has a nice car behind him with shades on his head. Arms folded over each other. This ad assumes that the way camel Joe is depicted is how everyone wants to be. The ad shows that they think that camel Joe in this way is what the population either strives to be or adores. The ad persuades the viewer not with words but with just the sight of something that they want to be. Things that they want to have, such as the nice car. The ad implies that if you smoke you can have a nice car, or a nice new persona in the fact that he looks cool, so carefree. The images portrayed in the ad give a happy carefree vibe, theres a smile on Joe’s face as well as a cigarette in his mouth, the car in the background and the arms folded across, nothing could bother him and everything is right in the picture. Basically the target audience of this ad is everyone. All people wish to be cool, everyone wants to be the guy that the population wants to be. They say bad boys get it all, so the ad portrays the one who has it all in an attempt...

Big Brother Isnt Watching You

...Big Brother isn’t Watching You The famous phrase “Big brother is watching you” is from the legendary book “1984” by George Orwell. It’s written in 1949, but yet it’s still magnificent. Many years later in 2011 a famous actor named Russell Brand wrote, “Big brother isn’t watching you”. It’s a commentary published on The Guardian’s webpage, and it’s about the UK riots. Brand used to live in London, and he is British. He is commenting on the big riots in London. You can also see in the text that Brand is a British lad. He speaks with a British accent, when he uses the words “mate” and so on. But he’s also speaken from his heart, when he uses the words “shit” and “fucking”. He’s a famous actor, but also a comedian. So that could a stunt in the text, that symbolise Brand’s comment is written with a conscious use of a relaxed language – this is a clear tendency throughout the text. For instance he often uses contractions of words – even in the title. Furthermore he uses slang: “…and have a row with the Old Bill.” (L. 69) Brand is, as before mentioned, a comedian and he writes in a serious but also entertaining and relaxed tone: He is able getting through with his message even though he uses irony and swear words as shit and fucking. These words help underlining his opinion and purpose of the commentary, as they seem quite heated. Brand’s profession is reflected in his choice of words. It would be possible imagining people who would be offended or would have a lack of understanding...

Big Brother Isnt Watching You

...”BIG BROTHER ISN’T WATCHING YOU” Void versus community spirit. These two feelings are feelings humans all across the world must deal with every day. They feel like missing out on something because the society doesn’t give them the space needed to become a success. In the summer of 2011 rioters in England drew the government’s attention to the fact that they felt neglected and overlooked in the society. In the commentary “Big Brother isn’t watching you” posted on The Guardian website, the English comedian, actor, musician and writer, Russell Brand explains the rioter’s motive for the 2011 UK riots. Russell Brand currently lives in Los Angeles but he still has a strong connection to his native country and therefore the riots in the UK have also become his problem. In the commentary he describes the situation seen from his point of view. Russell Brand uses an overload of sarcasm and irony to describe his position on the riots. He is very sarcastic about the way the 2011 UK riots have been handled and uses sarcasm to point out his dissatisfaction with the UK government. His attitude to the 2011 UK riots is that it is a common problem, which must be solved jointly. Russell Brand is very astonished at the way the rioters are being described as “mindless”. “However “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable” it might be, it has happened so we better accept it and, whilst we can’t justify it…and work out why so many people feel utterly disconnected from the cities they live in”...
