Slave history in the United States goes back to 1619 when a Dutch trading ship brought twenty Africans, Virginia. Many more ships with Africans laborers followed. Being of African descents on these shores soon became virtually synonymous with being a slave. In 1661, Virginia enacted the first law in the new colonies recognizing slavery (Sowell, 1981). Slavery was the foundation of the southern colonies’ plantation system. White people ran plantations using slave labor, and until 1808, some were also slave traders. Traders –Europeans, Africans, and north Americans-forcibly transported some 10 million Africans to various countries in the Americas, including 400,000 to the United States. On small sailing ship, hundreds of slaves were chained together for the several weeks it took to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Filth and disease killed many and drove others to suicide. Overall, perhaps half died en route. In sum, for nearly 400 years, people of African ancestry in the United States have struggled for social equality. As a nation, we have come far in this pursuit. Overt discrimination is now illegal, and research documents a long term decline in prejudice against African American (Firebaugh & Davis, 1988; J.Q. Wilson, 1992; NORC, 2007).

Depending on how the term is defined, as many as 230 million people around the globe are virtual slaves. The US state department, for instance, defines modern slavery to include forms of forced labor, involuntary domestic servitude, sex trafficking and child soldiers. American sociologist Kevin bales is probably the world’s foremost expert on slavery. He puts the number of enslaved people at 247 million – and that’s using a narrow definition. “This is about people who cannot walk away, who are forced to work without pay and who are operating 24/7 under the threat of violence,” bales said in highly publicized public lecture earlier this year.

The difference in modern-day slavery, he added, is the drastic drop in prices paid for slaves, with the world average being $90 (70 Euros).

In today’s society many factors contribute to racial prejudice and discriminations against African Americans. For instance many people who were in the slave era and in this current era may be big reason slavery are still so wide spread today. They may try to guide others to think and commit racist acts. Social scientist has also identified some common social factors that may contribute to the presence of prejudice and discrimination. In my opinion the three main one’s that target out African Americans are socialization, conforming behaviors, and economic benefits. Socialization is the concept that many prejudices may seem to be passed on from parents to children. Conforming behaviors state that prejudices may bring support from significant others; so rejecting prejudices may lead to losing social support. The pressures to conform to the views of family, friends, and associates can be formidable. Economic benefits states that social studies have confirmed that prejudices rises when groups are in direct competition for a job. This may explain why prejudices rise dramatically during times of economic and social stress.

Prejudice and discrimination can form a very vicious cycle in numerous ways. For example when people know they are being discriminated against, they often behave negatively, which then can confirm the original stereotype of the person doing the discriminating. Another example; social group A believes that social group B always engages in theft. Therefore, group A doesn’t hire anyone in group B. without jobs, group B has no money, and therefore may have to steal in order to eat and get shelter. In this scenario, group B is engaging in the behavior suspected by group A, but only because of group A’s original prejudice. In this way it can be a very vicious cycle indeed.

...This will also limit the population on Facebook. If someone deactivated their account it leaves space for others to use Facebook. It also get out everyone who terrorizes you or is malicious. This is a good idea for the most part but it does haves some flaws. It makes us resend all of our request again to people who we talk to every day. Even if we do not talk to them every day we still need to send one. For instance, if you reset your Facebook friend list and your cousin is on there, who does not get on a lot, they might not get your request for some time. Then you have lost contact with that person or you have made them feel insecure about your friendship with them. Another instance is, if someone does not know how to use Facebook properly they might accidently delete everyone and then wouldn’t know how to send request to get them back. It would be much more complicated to un-friend everyone, then have to go back and re-friend everyone you know. It is not worth the time and...

Personal Narrative: The Rube Goldberg Machine

...After it fell, the worst possible thing happened. The books fell the wrong direction because the table vibrated too much. The books going the wrong way didn’t allow the machine to finish which lost us some points. As this happened, I thought back some weeks ago when we first got together to come up with our solution for flipping the book’s page. At first, we had a ton of preposterous ideas. After this, the group and I, expect Joe, had to go home. The next time we came to Joe’s house to work. Joe had an idea that seemed to work. He had used my remote control geotrax train to turn the page. It did this by having a water bottle connected to the remote by sting dropped, causing the remote to be pulled down and the train using another string and a clip to pull over the book page. We all thought this was the perfect idea. The machine had to have so many “steps” or transfers of energy. For example, a ball rolling down something and knocking a book is one “step.” But if the book hits another book it does not count as another “step” because a “step” cannot be the same thing repeated. After, spending many weeks of trying to get this together it would be terrible if it did not...

What type of performance analysis would you perform to isolate the network connectivity issues? The analysis should include the questions you would ask of the users and any network team member. The first thing that I would do is first talk to my users and figure out who is experiencing network connection issues. Now that I’ve isolated who is having the problems I can go from there. It could be a numerous amout of things I would first have to go to their network and sharing center and use the trouble shoot key to see what issues are there. Define and determine the tools or diagnostics that could be implemented based on your analysis of the network issues. We can use ipconfig/all to make sure we are leasing a good ip address and not a 169 address which indicates connectivity issues also we can ping certain IP addresses to see if we get reply then comes the normal stuff checking wires and making sure everything is plugged in and check for faulty equipment which is usually 99% of your connectivity issues. Explain what steps can be implemented to possibly prevent these network issues from occurring. I believe staying vigilant and visiting access point routinely to make sure equipment and wires and properly connected and making sure users understand also...

DOWNLOADED FROM: www.freewebs.com\sbalpande\microprocessor CMOS interview questions. 1/ What is latch up? Latch-up pertains to a failure mechanism wherein a parasitic thyristor (such as a parasitic silicon controlled rectifier, or SCR) is inadvertently created within a circuit, causing a high amount of current to continuously flow through it once it is accidentally triggered or turned on. Depending on the circuits involved, the amount of current flow produced by this mechanism can be large enough to result in permanent destruction of the device due to electrical overstress (EOS) 2)Why is NAND gate preferred over NOR gate for fabrication? NAND is a better gate for design than NOR because at the transistor level the mobility of electrons is normally three times that of holes compared to NOR and thus the NAND is a faster gate. Additionally, the gate-leakage in NAND structures is much lower. If you consider t_phl and t_plh delays you will find that it is more symmetric in case of NAND ( the delay profile), but for NOR, one delay is much higher than the other(obviously t_plh is higher since the higher resistance p mos's are in series connection which again increases the resistance). 3)What is Noise Margin? Explain the procedure to determine Noise Margin The minimum amount of noise that can be allowed on the input stage...

...mobile app when Orca was a web app, and the URL was listed as an HTTPS site, but the HTTP address didn't forward users to the right page, according to John Ekdahl, a Romney volunteer who detailed the problems with the app and called it an "unmitigated disaster." An anonymous campaign source on the Colorado team revealed to Breitbart.com that it received hundreds of calls from volunteers who couldn't use the app or the back-up phone system. He revealed that usernames and passwords were wrong, and the reset password tool didn't work either, which meant they couldn't change phone PINs. "The primary issue was we beta-tested in a different environment than [headquarters Boston Garden]," he told the website. "There was so much data coming in -- 1,200 records or more per minute -- it shut down the system for a time. Users were frustrated by lag, and some people dropped off and we experienced attrition as a result." Working primarily as a web developer, I had some serious questions. Things like "Has this been stress tested?", "Is there redundancy in place?" and "What steps have been taken to combat a coordinated DDOS attack or the like?", among others. These types of questions were brushed aside (truth be told, they never took one of my questions). They assured us that the system had been relentlessly tested and would be a tremendous success. Economics

...Macroeconomics - The Financial Crisis of 2008 Mason S. Clark In 2008, a sequence of bank and insurance company failures resulted in a financial crisis that effectively brought global credit markets to a halt and required unprecedented government intervention. For example, Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) were both taken under the control of the government. In addition Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy after it was unable to find a buyer. Furthermore, Merrill Lynch was purchased by Bank of America, and American International Group was bailed out by the federal government with an $85 billion dollar capital injection. Shortly after, Washington Mutual (WM) went under; however, J P Morgan Chase (JPM) agreed to purchase the assets of WM resulting in the largest bank failure in the history of the United States. Due to the failures stated above it brings me to realize why banks are so hesitant to lend money between themselves or to anyone. The crisis began in the real estate market and the subprime lending crisis. As long as we can remember, the values in commercial and residential properties have been exponentially increasing and were not interrupted for nearly a decade. With housing prices increasing it lead to banks lowering lending standards allowing unqualified buyers to take out mortgages while at the same time deregulation blended lines between traditional investment banks and mortgage lenders. However, when housing prices failed to rise and homeowners...
