David levy “No Time to think” portrays him as an accomplished writer with a lot of experience and knowledge in his writings/work through the extensive research that he has invested in his work. Levy explores the vast impacts of technological advancement in our today’s society. In this article levy maintains that technological devices has affected our capacity to think intuitively, capacity to tap our vast realm of consciousness and reflections. The writer targets the entire society but mostly scholars, educator and students through his entire work. The abstract work clearly introduces the disadvantages of technological devices/advancement and how it has affected our thinking and reflections. Levy expects scholars, students and educators to take time and reflect on their use of technology and their effects.
The world has arrived...to me it depicts the arrival of a new age, stage or cycle of life that incorporates and implements new technology and devices that would minimize the levels of thinking and work. The introduction of this article demonstrates how levy took a lot of time to think when doing research for this writing. This is clearly depicted by him mentioning great scholars and innovators such as Barbara Mcclintock as people who did not rely on the technological devices/advancements to accomplish their great research/work but took time to think, reflect and tap their vast realm of consciousness. The introduction briefly lays out his plan and purpose of writing this essay as it points out how technology has affected our general academia standards and how our society value creative thinking rather than intuitive and contemplative thinking.
After reading the introduction I think that David levy is right to some point and I should take some time to think intuitively and tap my realm of conscious so as to make this sense the rest of the essay. The writer wants me to know use of short-term goals and technology has less access to wisdom, reflective and intuitive thinking can provide us. Most importantly David Levy wants us to respect intuitive thinking and contemplative thinking. However, it is difficult to figure out when to incorporate more time to thinking yet we have devices that can easily do that for us and we humans are considered to be generally lazy in life.
Levy provides a detailed information on Bush work “As we may think” simply because Bush gave an elaborate explanation on how technology can affect our reflection and thinking as it would create information overload problem/library problem. Bush in his work said “information overload was a threat and must be stored and consulted first” and “truly significant attainments were more likely to become lost in the mass of inconsequential” to my understanding Bush was referring to the technological advancements we are experiencing now. Moreover, the reason why the writer points out Joseph Pipers work is that he was a philosopher, technocrat and an engineer with vast knowledge in the field of technology. In his passage the writer states that Piper was worried at the rate at which workers’ were being replaced by “cogs of machine” and also his statement “ total work /total claim upon the whole human nature” in that it would consume entire leisure time of people.
Levy compares and contrasts between Bush and Piper works as they give elaborate description of how technology is going to affect our lives now and in the future more so, our time to think.. To them leisure is a form of stillness and relaxation. For instance, Bush was concerned with the loss of time for reflection (p.239) while piper on the other hand was concerned at the rate which technology was advancing (p.242).Some of the terms that I had to look up for were: information overload which refers to the availability of a lot of information that cannot be used at the same time, information environmentalism that refers to the creation of an environment that educate individuals on the impact of technology and general information and lastly inconsequential refers to the impact of something is less significant at the end of it all . These terms has enabled me to understand clearly David levy essay as it has given me an in-depth understanding of the impact of technology. David levy style of writing is great as it’s depicts a working of a great philosopher and great researcher

“Comedy Is Both Timeless and of Its Own Time”. to Which of the Plays You Have Read Do You Think This Statement Most Applies?

...by Aristophanes and Plautus comprise of comedy that is both timeless and of its own time - where the comedy tends to be more suitable and applicable to its time period rather than universally speaking. When thinking of comedy of its own time – it is evident how the comedic descriptions of women and more specifically married women and the way they are presented is common across all plays by both Aristophanes and Plautus. Married women are particularly criticised whose only job is to waste the money and resources of men whilst they sit and do nothing shown with Strepsiades in The Clouds where his wife robbed him of all his money – Strepsiades states how she is “wearing my resources”. This is corroborated by Plautus’s, The Swaggering Soldier with Periplectomenus who complains how wives make you miserable and waste your money endlessly spending money - “all that sort of expense that women cost”. Again, this concept of married women stealing men’s freedom and wealth is shown in The Brothers Menaechmus where Menaechmus explains how he has provided his wife with “servants, food, clothes, jewellery and “everything she could possibly need” yet she still constantly pesters him and is never satisfied. In a humorous light the playwrights display married women as an irritation to men’s life, who do nothing whilst men slave away only for women to spend their wealth – comedy which would be more of its own time rather than timeless. Similarly, women across the plays we see women as manipulative...

Fahrenheit 451 Argumentative Analysis

...People should not endanger their freedom to think by constantly exchanging their time for amusing distractions. When people look for distractions instead of time to think, they begin to expect immediacy. In time, society changes to reflect what people want. In the case of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, society changed and the government followed -- people endangered their freedom, and now that freedom is gone (54). One section of the book, Beatty’s Diatribe, showcases the idea of endangering freedom to think through the voice of the head of the fire department, Beatty. In the section, Beatty discusses how society dictated how it wanted to be (thoughtless and happy), and governments merely adapted. People wanted to be happy, so distractions were made available at every time so that nobody could have time to think, since thinking causes comparisons and arguments -- which do not make people happy....

Paper Debreif

...Process: I began the writing process by making an outline. I thought about the reasons and how much support I would need to validate. I don’t think more outline could have made my essay better simply because I think I did an efficient amount of work on outlining the essay. Also given the time constraint of writing the essay I don’t think it would be best to spend more time than I did on the outline because I barely finished the essay. Introduction: I think my essay has an engaging hook by using a quote from the prompt we were given. I take a position firmly not discrediting everything Thomas Paine says just that America isn’t together. I don’t really address the prompt’s background information just saying that America then is different from today. I think with saying that the audience can assume when Thomas Paine wrote that quote it was in a different time period. I think my thesis does effectively address the prompt. I think it just shortens the quote which I think makes the argument better by not fully disagreeing with Thomas Paine on all front just with one thing. Body: I think my body paragraphs flow logically. I chose to order them by the time period I deem the issue fits. Since fighting over religion is a thing you see time and time again throughout history I chose to put that since it not only a problem in America but lasting problem in the world. Then I put the systematic problems we have in the lower class people of America’s neighborhood and since so many things...

Reading Response on "This Is Water"

...explaining how to “think”. He gives example on how people think in different ways. “Blind Certainty” is another point he runs down stating how people see one way and one way only. He uses the phase “lens of self” as a way of how people receive the world. To alter this he brings up “Learning how to think” meaning “exercising some control over how and what you think”. I’m in college now so I presume that I already know how to think. Maybe my way of thinking is or could be the hardest or easiest way of thinking. In his speech he doesn’t want people to be insulted about what he is talking about. Just to look or “think” about it through a different prospective. I know the way I study and learn. I know the way I study and learn materials may be different for a different person. My friend finds the easiest ways to get his work done while still getting good grades. I on the other hand I need to have a hard copy of the material and look over it many times just to thouroughly know the material. David Foster also talks about “Blind Certainty” as I mentioned before. The so call “self centeredness” is how the world may seem like it revolves around you because you’re looking at it out of your own perspective. I know I feel like that sometimes. It’s not that I think about myself all the time or anything but I just feel like things get in MY way. Like Foster’s example of how people on the highway might be in YOUR way, yet you might be in theirs. I’ve been in that same position many times, not thinking...

Morals

...David M Johns Ethics in the Workplace Module 4 – Assignment 4 9/8/2014 Case 4.3 One Nation under Wal-Mart 2. Is there a Wal-Mart in your area? If so, has it had impact on your community or the behavior of local consumers? If there’s no store in your area, would you be in favor of Wal-Mart opening one? Explain why or why not? There is a Wal-Mart in my community, it is roughly 5 miles from my house and I don’t think it has had the effects that are prevalent in the article. Wal-Mart in my area is a little bit farther out of the way than the local grocery store or other stores such as Target; therefore I think the location of the store may have caused it not to be as successful. I can’t speak for the average consumer because when I do go to Wal-Mart it is usually because I have the need to purchase a lot of items and I know my cost will be cheaper at Wal-Mart which does take away business from other retailers but I don’t think it’s a large enough number that would make other stores go out of business, or at least not yet. 4. Can a retailer ever become too large and too powerful? Absolutely, if a retailer such as Wal-Mart continues to grow, it doesn’t just hurt competitors who provide similar products, it also hurts the producers. With Wal-Mart, they wish to provide as many products as they can at as low of a price as possible, which is great for the consumer. A consumer wants local retailers fighting for their attention and driving business into their building but too...

Darwinism

...point in time where everything began. However, I am not sure what happened or what was created at the beginning. I just do not think that humans just showed up as the way that humans are now and did not evolve from anything. That, to me, just sounds ridiculous. 2. I am definitely a believer in evolution over creationism. I think that the scientific information to back up evolution is too strong to deny. I think the people who do deny evolution are either too stubborn or too naïve and ignorant to believe in it. I definitely believe that there was something that happened at some point in time which helped apes learn certain things that they were unable to learn beforehand which then led to the evolution of humans. 3. I am somewhat torn in the middle on whether or not all species came from one single organism. I think it is definitely possible. However, I think it would make more sense to same certain types came from a single organism. Birds, bats, and certain insects are an example. They have flying abilities with wings which could show that they came from a certain organism. It might just be that they evolved and adapted in different ways which could explain humans with apes and monkeys. 4. I think that being an active Catholic can affect the way you view everything if you let it. As for me, I think it definitely affected me in my younger years. I think as you grow older you become more independent and are able to learn things more on your own. I also think the time that we...

Global Warming

I have a hard time believing it is the "most urgent possible disaster that could hit us" any time soon and that we need to give our full attention to it. I watched all about it on History channel this last weekend and even the clips and photo's that they show do not convince me that it is the #1 concern that society and the world should have. I personally believe that it is just "big business." And those who are capitalizing on it...know it! Now, I don't mind recycling and simple stuff like that, but I won't give up my candy apple red convertible GT and drive an ugly car loaded with batteries that looks like my sons shoes going down the highway! How Did Henrietta's Cells Take Without Permission?

...To some extent, I think race, class, and “the times” were the factors that were responsible for Henrietta’s cell being taken from her without her permission. I think “the times” was the most important factor that led to a series of actions of staff as Johns Hopkins and George Gey. At that time, racism was still a very serious issue in the society and segregation was law in Baltimore. Black people were always been separated from white people in public area like bus, restaurant, and hospitals etc. In Johns Hopkins, there colored restrooms, colored wards, and even colored-only fountains. Since Hopkins was built as a charity hospital for people do not have enough money to pay for medical bills, and it is the only hospital in the neighborhood that treated black patients, the hospital already knew that those poor patients would be grateful enough if they can get treatment and won’t be a threaten to them, so they might be able to do whatever they need and...

Difference Between Originalism And Living Constitutionalism

...fathers intended it to be, and Living Constitutionalism is the belief of changing the intent of the Constitution as time changes. I find Living Constitutionalism most desirable. Living Constitutionalism seems most desirable to me because I feel that even that the laws were written so long ago times change and people change as time goes on. With that being said laws have to be interpreted differently. I think with Living Constitutionalism it helps us (the people) with today’s time. I think that people are changing daily and the laws have to be interpreted in today’s views, if they are not then you would not have the difference in people. Everyone would be more the same....

This article talks about how students were given freedom of speech, but some think they they are taking it overboard. I think that this article is leaning more towards the weak side, and the author uses rhetoric, connotation, and bias to make his arguments weaker. The uses of rhetoric in this article make the author’s arguments weaker. For example, The Times Editorial Board uses pathos in, “But an Aug. 5 decision by the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia involved a less solemn form of expressive adornment: a rubber bracelet bearing the message "I ♥ boobies! Multitasking

...to get done increases. From being in school full time and also having to run a house it takes much of my time and being able to multitask effectively makes my day easier. I think multitasking is great when it comes naturally, for some it might even be an advantage. Although some might believe that splitting your attention into different jobs causes work quality, I think it all depends on the task and what requires more attention. For me it’s all about time management and how my day is split and what my priorities are. I’m married and although school is important my husband comes first. Before it was so much easier to get home, eat a hot pocket and wait till my mom got home to cook but that’s not my life anymore and I get home to do what she did and what everyone takes for granted. My multitasking is caused by my busy schedule and the thing I most want to get to at the end of the day is my family and for that reason it’s just easier for me to get multiple things done at once. Multitasking at home means I can get more things done at a certain amount of time. At home I can wash dishes while I cook and also watch TV. Although I may not be completely focused on the TV I can get the dishes out of the way and also get started on either boiling or frying something. Being able to get the dishes out of the way makes it possible to have time left over after wards when I have less dishes to wash. I am able to do several things at a time without...

...CEOs and other top managers did have an impact on the problem that they created for themselves. At the time though they did not care I don’t think. All they cared about was how big of a bonus and pay they could receive. Again it all came down the almighty dollar and how much they could make. I think it all as to do with greed. I don’t think they really cared about what was happening with their businesses they were running. They saw how much money they were given for giving out money to bad financial risks. In the end I don’t think they cared how it was going to affect their business in the long run. All they care about was the short run and how much money they could make. Instead of giving out compensation based on booking profits, they should have just given them a flat salary. That way any extra profits that were made could have been used to get Citi out of trouble instead of the government having to kick in taxpayer dollars to bail them out so they wouldn’t go under. 2. Of course the board of directors actions had a major effect on how everything played out at the company. They had the power to stop what was going on and they did nothing about it. Maybe at the time they didn’t think anything was wrong, but as the article stated some thought that they did not have enough time to handle the situation. If this was the case I think if you can’t handle or have enough time to do the job as a board of director you should resign. I believe for a lot of people being a member on...
