I did it! I completed my first quarter at Loma Linda University. I am currently enrolled in their RN to BSN program through the School of Nursing. I remembered before the class started how nervous I was. I wondered if I would be able to keep up with the assignments while working full-time but I proved to myself that it can be done. To celebrate, Dr. Ingram invited all the students from her Nursing 337 class to her house to have an “End of Quarter/Holiday party.” Thankfully, I didn’t have to work that night so I decided to go. I arrived to Dr. Ingram’s house about 6 o’clock. I walked through the door and immediately noticed there were a lot more people there than I had expected. 1. Cognitive domain, which includes intellectual skills such as knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. 2. Affective domain, which includes feelings, emotions, interests, attitudes, and appreciations. 3. Psychomotor domain, which includes the ability to mentally manipulate objects. I especially looked at Maria and explained when we teach anybody we automatically have these domains in mind but when further reading about it, I read an article by Skiba (2013) that used Bloom’s taxonomy to make word clouds for online students and it had very favorable results for retention. Another reason why it was interesting was because Bloom’s taxonomy could also be used when we need to develop a syllabus for teaching later on. I told them that I also found Motivational Interviewing (2007) very interesting. Levensky talks about four principle of motivational interviewing (express empathy, develop a discrepancy, roll with resistance and support self-efficacy) and the four skills of motivational interviewing (reflective listening, asking open questions, affirming, summarizing). I told them I, as well as many nurses I know, are guilty of talking more than listening. I saw Dr. Ingram by herself. I introduced myself since I am sure she wouldn’t know me by seeing me. We exchanged small talk. I told her I was happy that I made it through my first quarter which I am sure she heard from all of the students.
She then asked, “Any suggestions for me and the other instructors to make the class more helpful for the next group of students?” I thought about it and I told her honestly, “What would have been helpful for me is to break down the portfolio into smaller bits by making the portfolio work part of weekly assignment or a weekly guideline. For example in week one, tell everybody to start a wix.com portfolio account. Then in week two tell them they need to add tabs/links labeled this and that. It doesn’t have to be part of the grade but it would have saved me from spending 30 hours setting it up my account like I did in Portfolio I.” I also made a little suggestion to allow another day for students to comment on discussion boards. There have been times when I completed my discussion questions but no one else has posted. I don’t feel the people that do their work early should be penalized. If another day were allowed to comment on classmate‘s discussions, the student can read what their entire discussion group thinks about the
