The United Nations named Toronto as the most multiracial and multicultural city in the world. Today, this can be said for the entire Greater Toronto Area. In diverse communities, culture really becomes the driving force of the community. As such, the culture that each student brings with them to Canada will and does have a great impact on how they function within a school setting. Effective teaching requires knowledge of the past and present experiences and perceptions of learners. It is also important for an educator to identify with and understand whatever ethno-cultural, faith, sub-cultural, national, socio-economic or other group or individual at their school to be able to effectively teach them. Anyone who has looked at the Ontario curriculum can probably testify that this in fact is the case. The expectations and topics of discussion are set up as building blocks. Students have to meet certain skills and expectations in grade 9 math, which then gets added to in grade 10 math, and so on. This means that there is continuity at each grade level and this is very important for the students. If this was not the case, then pending on who the students teacher was, what they taught, each student would be on a different playing field, which does not make for an equitable education system.

3. What were some of the biggest adjustments you had to make in Ontario schools?

The biggest adjustment for both Mahela and Kumar was in terms of language. English was something that was part of the curriculum, but it was not the language spoken in the public sphere or at home. Both students cited that their math and science skills were up to par, but they initially struggled in those subject areas in which producing written work was required. Another adjustment for them was to adjust to the style of teaching, and both preferred Ontario’s because “teachers [here] are nice”.
