Create 4 CRITICAL questions directed at the reading.
1. Does assessment determine curriculum? Or does curriculum determine assessment? I have been taught both of these ideas, it seems as if authentic assessments drive curriculum. But which is correct?
2. Should authentic assessments require a rubric to assess? Some of the assessments types such as performance-based assessments or play-based assessments are very open-ended and can easily become invalid when the skills needed for those assessments do not reflect the targeted skills.
3. Are the authentic assessments types like interview-based, performance based, and portfolios meant to be graded? Or is their only purpose to gather information on students?

“Authentic assessments identify a focus on individual growth and learning over time. Authentic assessments identify and build on student strengths such as language, prior experiences, interests, and funds of knowledge to facilitate learning” (p. 23).
I found this part of the reading to be inspiration. It brings me peace of mind to know that future generations of teachers are being taught to consider student variables that are traditional ignored in the classroom (e.g. language, culture, interests, etc.) as a strength and an asset. This movement towards student-centered instruction is much needed.
“Perhaps one of the greatest potential outcomes of this approach is that it often results in teachers and students having a deep sense of mutual endeavor” (p. 37).
I liked this sentence a lot because it emphasized the importance for students and teachers to work together towards a common goal. For the most part, students want to learn and teachers want students to learn; so, when both teachers and students realize that they can help each other out in an effort to achieve their goal it creates a beautiful relationship of trust, respect, and
