1) What surprised you most about the changes from the textbook in Internet/Web 2.0?
a. The most surprising change I’ve discovered throughout the years and noticed from the textbook is how fast a platform or service is replaced by another. We’ve witnessed this trend for many years with client-side applications, although the lifespan of web applications tends to be shorter. Everyone loves to try a new application, however if you’re part of a younger generation and your parents are using a “old platform” and posting your baby pictures online, you might as well forget being the high school prom king or queen. The Semantic Web is the most important thing I’ve learnt from this textbook. I’d forgotten about the concept of the semantic web until reading the book. I’ve always had a vision of an “Agnostic OS” that could run software from any platform, current and legacy. This stemmed from my frustration of having way too many computers, or virtual machines to maintain, while LOVING certain apps that have either lived their lifespan, were no longer supported by newer operating systems, or only lived in a certain OS (i.e. OS 9). I believe the semantic web is a good step in the right direction to help resolve legacy issues, without the need for emulation, while also helping create a standard that works for all computer hardware and …show more content…
I’ve a lot of mixed feelings on the subject and have been in many discussions concerning this topic. From my observations it depends on who is using the technology and how it’s being used. My initial response is that it’s very well changed how we communicate and perceive the world and one another. While being inundated with an amazing amount of information I believe we’re forgetting what it’s like to shut off all the machines, go for a long walk in the woods and become more mindful of our surroundings.
