Nucleus Accumbens And The Pursuit Of Happiness

Our brains naturally have this urge to chase happiness because of a little system in our brain called the "reward system." McGonigal proclaims in her book that Neuroscientists have discovered an area in our brain that promises happiness and encourages us to get whatever can make us happy(112). When our brain acknowledges a possibility for happiness, it releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine creates this feeling of alertness and excitement and just wants us to obtain anything that triggers anticipation. Kirkey also mentions in her article that the nucleus accumbens and the "reward center" propels us to pursue rewards. Our brains have evolved to keep us working and active through the promise of happiness. When we see something …show more content…
Kirkey states, Jamie Gruman, chair of the Canadian Psychology Association argues that all emotions serve a purpose in life. Even negative emotions can be beneficial to human life, given that they are motivating because they influence us to do better. Negative emotions also give us a better outlook on life. For example, we become more grateful for all the little things and we also learn to be more tolerating. Kirkey also suggests that we should keep our expectations realistic so we don’t self criticize ourselves when we fail to achieve them. Instead we should forgive ourselves and try again to avoid creating more guilt as McGonigal states "It’s the feelings of shame, guilt, loss of control, and loss of hope that follow the first relapse, Once you're stuck in the cycle, it can seem like there is nor way out except to keep going."(145) She suggests that we shouldn't suppress our emotions, instead we should accept them and be more self compassionate toward ourselves when we fail. So when we start over again, we can put in more effort and make progress which is what will make us happy. Sometimes it does become difficult to focus on activities that improve our quality of life when we are under stress just like Csikzentmihaly states in his book(22), that psychic entropy interferes with the state of flow because our mind is focused on our problems rather than the activity. However, Kirkey implies that negative emotions can actually be motivating because it gives you this energy to try to increase performance more. So maybe we can use stress as a motivator to do better instead of complaining or overthinking

Love Is Love

...took the time to do some research, and found that each state gives the rights to who they will allow to be recognizing under marriage. It’s on a ballet to be voted on by the people of a state. This give grounds to limiting the marriage between sibling, a first cousin, and also having more than one spouse. An article I read in US NEWS by Brian Brown, which states “The purpose of publicly recognizing marriage is to encourage men and women to form stable families to bear and raise children”. This is a good point of view from him, but why does loving someone of the same sex not give the right to raise a family and be just as happy? Some might say its discrimination; some might say it is unfair to humanity. Is it fair to take away the pursuit of happiness because a couple of the same sex wants the same as a couple of the opposite sex? Marriage brings on many new roles for couples like buying and taking care of a home, buying a vehicle, joining bank account, picking medical and life insurance. These rights of marriage are stripped from same-sex couples, not giving the equal right to be with the person they love and care for and what to build a life together with. Love is love, why should it be based on who you are in love with? When looking a same-sex marriage, I wonder if a person is making the choice to be with someone of the same sex, or if it is all they know and...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...
