Module 6 Identify two (2) variables needed to promote the accuracy of pulse oximetry results in the newborn. Discuss why these variables are important to address.
One of the variables needed to promote the accuracy of pulse oximetry results would be the flexibility of the fit. A flexible fit for all finger sizes from adults to pediatrics. Also to be accurate with low circulation or dark skin tones. A good to low perfusion. Another variable needed is a pulse oximetry that is easy to clean or disposable after use. A contaminated pulse oximetry can easily spread highly contagious orally ingested pathogens such as Norovirus and C. difficile. A dirty pulse oximetry can interfere with a more accurate reading.
Describe two (2) benefits and two (2) limitations to performing a pulse oximetry on all newborns.

A pulse oximetry program can be established in the hospitals for screening data. Quality improvement can ensure the care using evidenced based practice, improve performance, review data for pulse oximetry performance and improve compliance with pulse oximetry participation (Dolansky & Moore 2013). Another way to improve newborn outcome with pulse oximetry monitoring is to make sure the device is applied appropriately. If the nurse is unsure of where to put it or how it is applied, the nurse should ask a team member for assistance so that the patient has the best outcome.
