Nutrition labels contain regulations made by the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act since 1990. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designed the labeling, which reflect the Act and it’s requirements. In result, consumers have an easy-to-read label of information about the food we eat.
The major aspects of nutrition label are the Ingredient List, Serving sizes, Nutrition Facts, The Daily Values, Nutrient claims, Health Claims, and Structure-Fraction claims.

The Ingredient List must present all ingredients on the label in descending order of dominance by weight; which means the ingredients that dominates greatest by weight must be listed first and so forth. The serving size reflects the amount of food per serving; nutrition facts presented on the label is measured for each serving. Knowing how many servings you are eating reflects the amount of nutrients you are consuming. The Nutrition Facts require nutrient information labeled in two ways. The first is quantities which is commonly written in grams; the second as a percentage of nutrients called “Daily Values.”

Nutrient claims such as “Sugar-Free,” may be displayed on labels providing they meet the FDA’s definition. A list of the definitions may be found on the FDA website for clarification. Health claims are graded “A,” “B,” “C,” and “D,” they require food manufactures to collect scientific evidence. The FDA has supplied a list on their website which allows manufactures the ability research requirements to determine a product’s requirement to meet a label’s grade. Structure-Function Claims do not need scientific evidence; these claims can be made with no FDA approval. An example of a structure-function claim is “improve memory,” the only requirements such as this one must not mention a disease or symptom.

Lack of exercise, poor nutrition, smoking and drinking are the four that I can change. The four goals that I have chosen are to stop smoking, stop drinking, to eat healthier than I have been, and to exercise more. The first goal I intend to take on is to stop smoking. Currently, I am taking a prescribed medication in order to quit smoking. I was not aware that smoking makes you more at risk for osteoporosis. So other than wanting to quit in order to be healthier, I am more motivated to quit because I do not want osteoporosis when I get older. I smoke more when I drink, so that will be challenging...

...In his essay “Being Fat Is OK,” Paul Campos disputes the federal government’s definition of “overweight” (206). He even goes so far as to suggest that the government is perpetrating a fraud against the unsuspecting American people by setting weight standards that are unreasonable and not founded on any scientific fact. He points out rather convincingly that these standards “not coincidentally, serve the interests of America’s $50 billion per year diet industry” (207). It is his belief that the obsession with dieting in this country is caused by a series of intricate “lies” propelled by “the dishonesty of the propaganda war that the diet industry, with eager cooperation of our government, is carrying out against the American people” (207). Campos contends that it is not the government’s concern for our health but greed that influenced the stringent standards released that define someone as overweight or clinically obese. Campos confers that if Americans were lead to believe they were overweight they would flock to the market to purchase some of the thousands of dietary products provided by the industry. By providing quotes from the editors of extremely credible sources such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Campos exposes the weak link between being overweight and our overall health.
