West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. ...From the Writer “Dorian Gray the Escape Artist” is the culmination of my work in my WR100 seminar, Fantasy at the Fin-de-Siècle. The final assignment was to create a research paper based on an interesting problem or paradox I had found in Oscar Wilde’s book, The Picture of Dorian Gray. For me, one of the book’s most fascinating elements was Dorian’s immature behavior; though he grows older, he never seems to “grow up.” At first, I investigated how my idea related to aestheticism and what Dorian’s immaturity showed about aestheticism; however, I could not find a solid way to prove my thesis. My greatest problem was being unsure of how writing a paper based on a research problem in The Picture of Dorian Gray constituted a researchable argument and not just a literary analysis. Hoping to gain a different perspective on the assignment, I met with fellow classmates to talk out my problem. It turned out that they were having the same issue with their essays, and through discussing my paper with them, I realized that my topic was too narrow to be easily supported by sources; the idea of Dorian growing older without growing up was interesting but could not easily be supported with sources outside the novel itself. This lovingly recorded and photographed story by Richard Bach is about a seagull who flies beyond his wildest dreams. It is a metaphor of the inner spiritual journey with its twists and turns leading towards the ultimate goal of self-realisation. This book has passed through my hands many times as gifts to other young readers. I remember the mild shock of seeing the saffron-clad, shaven-headed English nun who originally gave me the book. I remember the bossy way she began to direct the course of my life, the gift of the book, the blessings she gave me and my brother of a wrist band, the chanting of the Tibetan Buddhist monks she brought with her and her broad smile. The fact that she had several different names-Oogie, Kelongma, Sister Kechog Palmo-fascinated me yet seemed so natural for such an unusual character. She was a friend of the family and that was good enough for me. Anse has taken things from his children to get what he wants before, but he does not use his linguistic skills to obtain them, he flat out steals them. After just figuring out that Anse had bought a new team Darl states, “So that’s what you were doing in Cash’s clothes last night.” (190). Showing that in order to buy the team while Cash was unconscious he stole money from him as well as traded something away that was not his in the first place, Jewel’s horse. Anse did not persuade Cash or Jewel in order to obtain these things, he flat out stole them right from underneath their noses. To add insult to injury his excuse for this heinous act that is supposed to redeem him is not some masterful display of words only the statement, “For fifteen years I aint had a tooth in my head.” (191). Truly a brilliant display of well thought and planned out use of his own diction. Speaking of Anse’s diction there is a point towards the end of the novel in which he does try to persuade someone to give him something that he wants, that something being ten dollars from his only daughter Dewey Dell.
