This descriptive research is based on observation of real life situations, rather than a controlled research setting. The project involves monitoring drivers at traffic lights to determine the effect of cell phone use on braking behavior. These observations are analyzed to determine better considerations for human factors. Procedure: In order to receive better observations and more usable samples of data, the group collected three samples from stoplight locations (intersections of Iowa and Madison, Burlington and Gilbert, and Clinton and College) all located in Iowa City, IA. The three samples were collected at different times of day, including morning (8-10 AM), midday (12-2 PM) and evening (4-6 PM). These times are assumed to include the most populated stoplight traffic, in order to provide more representative samples that can describe general behavior. Data was collected by group members at an individual stoplight location, in one direction (either East/West or North/South). The handbook was developed by CTRE and funded by the Iowa Highway Research Board (TR455). The handbook describes straightforward trafficstudy procedures to help local agencies “get their arms” around specific traffic-related questions or potential problems. Data collected from these studies can be critical to decision making and can help agencies communicate more effectively with community members and local officials. It was really interesting to see the different types of farming. All three of them were completely different than what we do on my home farm. They shared pros and cons of how they farm, and what they’re doing in the future to make the way they farm better. What were the main concerns/observations/experiences of the speakers that formed the basis for their comments and/or recommendations? (about ½ page) Nathan talked about his 850 acre row crop operation. On his family farm, they also raise about 80 stock cattle on 50 acres of pasture. Something that they are experimenting with is planting cover crops on their row crops, and then grazing the cattle on the cover crops. This has worked so far, and they are looking to do more of this. Nathan thinks that grazing cover crops is a logical step for the best management of the farm. Doing this, Nathan believes it will be helpful for long term farming.
