Dental Office Observation
I have completed my ten hours of dental observations at the Locust Lane Dental Group. Dr. B’s office staff consisted of Melisa, the office manager, Melinda, the dental hygienist, and Yolanda the dental assistant. The roles and duties of Melinda, the dental hygienist, are to read the patient’s file and make sure all the equipments are set up before receiving her patient. Once she receives her patient, she asks her patient if there is any changes in patient’s health (recent surgery, paining anywhere, etc) and update it in dental charting. They all respect each other and communicate with each other properly. They do not discriminate or use any foul words while talking with each other. The work seems to be shared well between the staff members. After Melinda, the dental hygienist, completed any procedure, she calls dentist and he check to make sure everything is done properly. In the Locust Lane Dental Clinic, it is a responsibility of another staff to set up all the equipments if another staff is late to work. In my second day of shadowing, I arrived earlier than Melinda so receptionist took me to Melinda’s room and asked me to wait for her. I observe front desk procedures to include office polices where reception is in charge of it. Medical history review and vital signs, periodontal exam, dental charting, dental health education, exposure and processing of radiographs and/ or digital radiography, scaling and root planning, polishing, sealants, fluoride treatment/ varnish application, and sterilization procedures and infection control are performed by the Dental Hygienist. However, dentist makes sure everything was done correctly after completion of scaling and root planning, polishing, sealants, fluoride treatment/vanish application.
