Describe an obstacle that you have faced in your professional or your academic life. How did you overcome it and how did it foster your development

As so often happens, events that initially appear vexing or inconvenient often have far reaching ramifications on a person’s social and emotional development. One such incident occurred in my early childhood that impacted me greatly and altered my perspective on life.
I was an extremely shy and introverted boy during my junior and middle school years. However, sometime in the 5th standard, I was instructed to choose an appropriate speech as an elocution assignment and deliver it in front of my classmates.
It was indisputable that I was incredibly nervous, so it came as little surprise to me that I flubbed my lines and performed abysmally. As expected, I got a withering appraisal from Mrs. Fernandez, my English teacher. My final performance left her feeling dispirited and dejected as an English lecturer.
Back home, my father, the, “in-house motivation machine”, assuaged my feelings and dissected my performance. He made it abundantly that if I didn’t muster the requisite confidence to conquer my inner demons at this stage in life, my professional career would be threatened. My father had overcome a debilitating stammer in his youth, due to a complicated physiological condition, so eloquence was a talent that he prized. He had invested his unrequited ambitions in me and wanted me to exploit my abilities to the fullest.
As my father’s words thundered through my mind, I resolved to radically alter my mindset. A year later, in the 6th grade, I registered for an intramural elocution competition – one of the most prestigious extra-curricular events in the academic year. Since the presiding judges would include principals from other schools, all the participants were eager to put forth their best performance.
During the first practise session, I revealed the piece that I wanted to recite to Mrs. Fernandez. She looked baffled. The passage in question was a soliloquy from Julius Caesar (Act 3, Scene 2). The play was included in the 9th grade English Literature curriculum and I was attempting to master it without truly understanding the historical or emotional context.
Oddly enough, I was secretly aware that choosing such an emotionally charged piece had given me the necessary “failure cushion” in case I erred. I was also aware that I had to conquer my stage fears. Mustering my courage, I strode onstage and without a pause launched into Mark Antony’s memorable eulogy to Caesar. After hitting all the highs and lows of his oratory, I concluded the speech on a rousing note. For a few seconds there was palpable silence followed by raucous cheers and thunderous applause.
This was a watershed event because it imbued me with the necessary confidence to speak publically in lively debate with others. I was no longer bothered by niggling issues such as nervousness and took part enthusiastically in group discussions and seminars. It does seem to be an appropriate coda to my transition from awkward teenager to a self-assured adult.

Life Obstacles

...Life is full of obstacles. Some obstacles are easier to overcome than others, and one might even say that life itself is an obstacle course that one keeps trying to beat. Many people face drawbacks in their lives in which, for the most part, they overcome. On occasion, these obstacles range from getting to a specific place on time to obstacles that are much bigger such as financial trouble, sexism, racism, or worse. Then there are a few people who become their own obstacles in life. As Ralph Marston says, life is full of grueling obstacles, but one should not let themselves become one of those obstacles which are true except when one does become their own obstacle. Many people in life face difficult trials; some more difficult than others....

The Obstacles of Life

...Mimi Zycherman James DeRogatis Review of the Arts: Honors 12/9/13 The Obstacles of Life A Greek, a fighter, and a poet walk into a bar. The Greek says, “I’ll think I’ll have a craft-made IPA, but only if it’s from Greece.” The fighter says, “I’ll have a warm PBR in a can.” The poet says, “I’ll have whatever hops is on tap, but put it in a broken wine glass.” So many stipulations just to get a beer! Why struggle when all you need to do is order a cold one? Man vs. Self has its roots in Greek mythology, and has been a common theme in modern-day media. Man’s inner struggle is as common today as it was in the past. In the Greek epic, “The Odyssey” by Homer, the movie “Rocky” starring and written by Sylvester Stallone, and “Just Kids” by Patti Smith, each main character pursues an improbable goal with pitfalls along the way. However, he or she who overcomes so many obstacles becomes the person they want to be. “The Odyssey,” tells the story of the Greek hero Odysseus and his 20-year journey home after the fall of Troy. The epic poem begins with Odysseus trapped on the island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso. After escaping he attempts his journey home, telling people along the way of his adventures. After ten years of fighting in the Trojan War, it takes him another ten years to get home to his kingdom of Ithaca. Since it takes Odysseus so long to get home, his family believes he is dead. This ancient narrative poem and its theme, Man vs. Self, is one of the oldest known written...

The Importance Of Obstacles In Life

...through struggling times? Obstacles come in all different shapes and forms. The majority of your life is spent worrying about how everything will eventually go wrong. However, I believe that your struggles shouldn’t tear you down, they should build you up. Everyone has a struggle whether it's an injury, disorder, allergy, etc. I dance, it's my escape route in a storm. When I dance, everything just disappears, all my worries and anxieties, the stress of certain things, it all goes away when I dance because I know I'm safe. Until one day when everything went wrong. I sustained an injury in 2015 and then again in 2016, tenosynovitis, which is the inflammation of the tendon sheath where muscle connects to bone. Tenosynovitis was like the end of the world to me. I couldn't dance for 6 months, that meant no company, no Nutcracker,...

Obstacles In Life Analysis

...Life is nothing without competition. Whether people admit it or not, everyone wants to be the best. Everyone wants the critical acclaim, fame, or distinguish. Einstein once said "You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” Who wants to lose? No one. Everyone wants to be a winner. Unfortunately, the world isn't full of winners. The world is full of people who learn the rules of the game and then conform themselves with just being good enough instead of being extraordinary. To me, Einstein was preaching that we're all pawns in the game of life and the way we move dictates our success. In my life, Einstein's words have been a private motto. For example, when I was awarded a full ride to UNC everyone accredited it to the fact that I...

Overcoming Obstacles In Life Analysis

...Life does not differentiate among the young, the old, the rich, or the poor. Obstacles constantly occur throughout life, affecting everyone without discrimination. When everything appears to be falling apart, it does not matter how devastating the events are, but how an individual copes and overcomes it. For me, my most significant challenge was my grandparents, or rather, the circumstances surrounding them. When my grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012, my mother and I immediately flew to Korea. At first, I was unsettled with the sight of a skeletal frame, dark eye bags, and the hopelessness in her eyes that she was attempting to conceal with a glowing smile. While caring for her, I watched her mental and physical health crumble....

Obstacles Of City Life In The 1800s

...City Life in the 1800s When immigrants from Europe and Asia traveled to the United States of America, several obstacles were faced, and calling the journey difficult is an obvious understatement. Most immigrants did not have a place to live in, and barely anyone could afford an apartment house. Therefore, as a solution, immigrants lived in tenements, a small room where between seven and nine people lived. However, the tenements were extremely unhygienic which led to diseases and the room being littered with garbage. Additionally, during a cholera epidemic outbreak, numerous individuals in New York City were killed, several of them being tenement residents. Eventually, in 1863, riots broke out protesting the inhumane conditions of the tenements....

After the war was won, Hamilton went home to his family, and studied to become a lawyer. His studies would help when, later, he would propose his ideas to Congress for a strong, central government. His proposals were met with large opposition due to that they were seen as too similar to the government the colonies just escaped, and they were too ahead of his time. They would gradually grow to be accepted by most, due to his hard work in explaining his plans for...
