The Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable
Computer networking is the basis of the Internet and most all businesses globally. Methods of communication are available to us today which would not be possible without computer networks. Networks increase productivity by allowing computers to and users to simultaneously share data and resources. With a network setup Information is centralized, and repetition of information is avoided because it is shared throughout the network. Networks enable business functions to be completed faster and more precisely. Networks also allow the possibility of expanding as the business grows.
Ocper, Inc. currently houses 20 windows peer to peer client computers with the expectation of doubling in size within the next two years. Although a peer to peer network is inexpensive to set-up and allows for file and printer sharing without special software, there are limitations and disadvantages to this setup. In a peer to peer setup, each client is dependent upon the knowledge of each user, and if any user were to shut down at any point, every other user would lose access to any resources that machine shared. The security of the network is less than desirable. Managing all the clients on a peer to peer network can be quite time consuming considering each client would have to be physically visited in order to do maintenance or updates. In order to make the network more secure and also allow for sharing of resources even when a user logs off, a client server network is recommended. There will be a central server that stores all shared files for each user. The server will create backups that can be scheduled after hours as to not interrupt business during business hours. The server will manage user security, printer sharing, internet access, email, and windows software updates for the OS and the anti-virus definitions. In addition to these tasks, the server can also share software applications for several users. As a package deal, upgrading to a client server network can provide easier network administration, and provide a better environment that is more secure and accessible to company data by all users.
Upgrading to a client server network will require some adjusting of existing equipment and data transmission cables. Currently coaxial cable is being utilized which can be very costly due to the high costs associated with coax cable. Switching to twisted cable will reduce the cost of cabling while still maintaining adequate data transfers with minimal interference. An advantage of twisted pair cabling is the increase in data transmission speeds. With twisted pairs, 1 GB per second can be achieved compared to coax falling short at speeds just under 1 GB per second. In addition to the cost difference, coaxial cable can be harder to work with due to its size and bending limitations. Unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP) has a higher bending radius, has a cheaper cost, and a faster data transfer rate than coaxial cable. As technology advances, so does the components required to implement new types of network setups. The excitement of new technology known as fiber optics has greatly enhanced the networking world when it comes to data transfer speeds. Fiber optic cables carry light waves as signals and are capable of high speeds due to the speed of light. There are many benefits to using fiber optic cables. The bandwidth capabilities are many times higher and optical cable is more immune against outside interference. Based on being light-based, optical fiber cables transfer data at light speed which offers data to its users in real time. Along with the increase in speed capabilities, security is greatly enhanced as a result of the difficulties of hacking and breaking into light transmission. This is not the case when conventional cabling is used such as coax or twisted pairs. With the increase of data transfer rates, security, and lower interference issues, there is also a premium price that must be paid. Optical fiber carries the highest cost associated with network cables. You will pay a premium for optical fiber cable, but it is by far the best cable currently offered. Although the price of Optical fiber is expensive, it delivers both speed and security improvements over copper.
Below, you will find some cost comparisons for twisted pair (Cat 5e) compared to coaxial and fiber optic cable. Although There is a big difference between the costs associated with each network type, upgrading to Cat5e will offer the best bang for your buck if you need to expand over the next two years. Coaxial cable will get the job done at a fraction of the price, but eventually coaxial will be obsolete and you will be forced to invoke a new networking setup based on changing standards. Upgrading now will help to reduce security threats in addition to increasing data transfer speeds and allowing for shared resources. Fiber optical cost analysis shown, is far beyond your necessities, but we have included costs in order to show the price comparisons to coaxial cable and twisted pairs (Cat 5e).

Everything is connected via coaxial cable and is referred to as passive, meaning that each computer on the network “listens” for data to pass by with its name.
