Odysseus is not a good man because of disloyalty, poor leadership skills, and violence.

Many people say odysseus overcame many obstacles to return home and reunite with his son, and wife. He even made that clear by telling Circe. “Circe, now make good a promise you gave me once- it’s time to help me home, my heart longs to be home” (10.532-533)
This quote demonstrates that Odysseus does possibly want to truly return home, Because that is what he told Circe. However, his actions did support the words he shared with Circe. Odysseus mounted Circe’s bed, and according to him it was gorgeous. (10.386) Odysseus stayed with Circe for a whole year. Instead of using that time to return home to Ithaca, he received rich food, and lust from Circe. …show more content…
Why does he not plan a way to outwit Circe or Calypso? Instead, he meekly accepts staying with them both for quite a bit of time. Odysseus claims he longs to return home, and his heart longs for Penelope. However, he does nothing in his action to …show more content…
I signaled the crew with frowns to set me free- they flung themselves at the oars and rowed on harder,
Perimedes and Eurylochus springing up at once to bind me faster with rope on chafing rope
But once we’d left the Sirens fading in our wake, once we could hear their song no more, their urgent call- my steadfast crew was quick to remove the wax I’d used to seal their ears and loosed the bonds that lashed me.” (12.508-517)
Even though Odysseus was able to get him and his crew through the trial of the Island of Sirens, he appears to have more fails as a leader than success. Odysseus refuses to leave the cave of the cyclops Polyphemus. Despite his men’s urging to the contrary.

“‘Let's make away with the cheeses, then come back- hurry, drive the lambs and kids from the pens to our swift ship, put out to sea at once!’
But I would not give way-” (9.253-259)
Odysseus's stubborn spirits led to the death of many of his crew members. If Odysseus would have listened to the rest of his crew, he could have saved lives. But instead, he was too confident that he could handle whatever crossed his path. Not only does he not listen to crew, he also fails to communicate with crew about contents of bag he receives from Aeolus. After over-confident Odysseus sailed for 9 days by himself with no rest, he predictably fell asleep. He was exhausted. His men became curious and preceded to open the bag, not knowing what it

Odysseus Tragic Hero In Homer's Odyssey

...is not always the case. Odysseus, the epic hero in The Odyssey, is a man who is loved by everyone. However, they turn a blind eye to the fact that he is a very egotistical hero. Most of Odysseus’ “heroic” acts are to benefit himself and not for the people that are seeking his heroism. ...A Tragic Hero vs. an Epic Hero A tragic hero is a character that makes a wrongful decision and at the end pays for it. His choice will cause tragic circumstances. On the other hand, an epic hero is a character that goes through difficulties along his journey, all of which end up making him stronger. Example of a tragic hero is seen in Oedipus de King by Sophocles and an epic hero is seen in the Odyssey by Homer. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the epic hero who goes through so much in order to return home. It takes him 10 years to finally return home and in his adventure he encounters a nymph named Calypso who kidnaps him in her island and doesn’t let him go until she is ordered to do so by Zeus. He is almost killed by the Cyclops’ Polyphemus, but survives by using his cunningness. The greatest attribute of Odysseus is being smart because that is how he survives all the challenges presented and how he gets home safe while many of his men get killed in the act. “Yea, and if some god shall wreck me in the wine-dark deep, even so I will endure…For already I have suffered full much, and much have I toiled in perils of waves and wars. Let this be added to the tale of those.” (Homer V 18) Epic heroes are differentiated by other kind of heroes because they survive their journey by being smarter, stronger and braver than any other person. Oedipus the King in the other hand is a tragic hero because even when he is smart and strong his story still ends tragically. One of his greatest...

...can be overdone, especially if a reason for the spectacle cannot be found. Language is the dialog or speech that makes up the story, and is used by characters to present the play to the audience. Aristotle lays out a very specific definition of what a tragedy should include, and how each element should be presented. He tells us that the tragedy must include these six elements and that they must be laid out in a logical manner. Aristotle sets up the framework for a tragedy that is used with or without the playwright’s knowledge for innumerable classical and modern plays. 3. Along with giving us the six elements of a tragedy, Aristotle also gives us four parts that should be included in a tragic hero. Sophocles’ character Oedipus is considered to be the classic example of a tragic hero. This is attributed to...

They betrayed him by trying to marry his wife. Odysseus was able to return home and kill the suitors and live happily with his wife, Penelope. Odysseus's character, actions, and legacy prove that he is an admirable hero. Another trait that Odysseus possesses is cunning. I feel that cunning is his most significant quality because it has salvaged him from numerous dangers along his journey. The most obvious case of Odysseus’s cunning is when he was dealing with Polyphemus. First, Odysseus gets Polyphemus drunk and then blinds him. He also makes him open the mouth of...

Odysseus Heroic Qualities Essay

...Odysseus is an exceptional hero who holds a number of traits that make him so. Some of these being his courage, leadership qualities, and his sharp intellect. He also possesses negative qualities, as every moral does, like his unfaithfulness and his overbearing self pride. His journey back to his home and family in Ithaca from the Trojan war is a long and treacherous one. On this journey he has shown these traits and proved his heroic ways. A few positive traits that Odysseus holds are courage, leadership qualities, and an immensely sharp intellect. On his journey he encounters many horrific monsters, such as the 6-necked Scylla in book 12. He steers his ship directly at this creature knowing that 6 men from his ship will be slain. He is also a very strong leader. He proves his leadership by saving his men, who had been turned into pigs, from the enchantress going by the name of Circe. English Western Literature

...with many problems. We have read many of them in this course such as Odysseus, Oedipus, Aeneas, Achilles and Beowulf. Then there is the great Hamlet who is not one of the Greek Heroes but a character from a play by William Shakespeare. Today in this essay, I want to compare some of the Greek poetry characters with the Prince Hamlet. First of all, I want to talk about few similarities between Hamlet and one of the Greek poet characters we have learned from this course. In my opinion, the story of Hamlet itself can be very analogous to the story of the poetry Oedipus. Both of the story have a plague or a outbreak going on from the beginning of the story. In the Oedipus the King, it starts with the Plague of Thebes where then Oedipus start to take actions for his people. This is where he shows his heroic features being a great leader for his city and sacrificing himself to solve the problem. The play Hamlet also starts with an outbreak and there seems to be something strange. The play starts with, "who’s there?" (Act 1 scene 1 line 1) by one of the guards. The fact that the play starts out with a question and with a guard, it foreshadows that there is something wrong and the Prince Hamlet would have a lot to face from this point on. They are similar in a way that they are both a tragic character who seems like they were destined to live this way. In fact, I believe that because these two characters are tragic and are in deep disaster, it makes the poetry and the play so powerful...

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Hero Inflation By Nicholas Thompson

...Nicholas Thompson’s article “Hero Inflation” he talks of the evolution of the word “Hero” and how it has been changed over history and he argues why he doesn’t think we should allow for being a victim to be a part of the qualification for being a hero along with being brave, noble and working towards a goal we approve of. Through his arguments he uses examples of logos to explain his reasoning in a logical progression. He begins this argument by describing the use of the word “Hero” during the 9/11 attacks when people first began to equate being a hero with being a victim as well. He states “The victims of the terrorist attacks deserve tremendous sympathy. They died tragically and often horrifically. But not all died in a way that people have...
