Rowing through rough seas, trying to keep all of his 12 ships alive, Odysseus, King of Ithaca, headed home from the long war with Troy. Odysseus, now considered a war hero, had the task of getting himself and all of his men back safe to Ithaca. The only problem was that he faced many difficult challenges along the way. A cyclopes, giants, and a beautiful sorceress were some examples of these. Although Odysseus had some shining moments, he also made some bad ones. Odysseus was strategic in navigating obstacles, however, his arrogance clouded his judgement, leading to his crew’s demise. Odysseus had many great strategies while navigating back home to Ithaca. His arguably best strategy was praying to Athena early in his journey. When Odysseus …show more content…
Odysseus’ crew dock their boats on an island, home to a cyclopes. Odysseus and his crew spot a huge wheel of cheese, and while the crew wanted to take it and get out of the shady place, Odysseus says, “Steal? Why wait when we can be given it?” Odysseus’ decision is eventually fatal for some of his men. Odysseus and 50 of his men enter the cyclopes’ cave, and using some clever tricks, escape with only a few deaths, goats and cheese, while the cyclopes, Polyphemus, gained blindness. As the crew is leaving, Odysseus shouts back, “I am Odysseus, hero of Troy, and my kingdom encompasses Ithaca, Cephalonia and wooded Zanthe!” The reason Odysseus shouted is for Polyphemus to fear him and tell the tale of getting blinded by the great war hero, but that is not what happens. Instead, Polyphemus calls upon his dad, Poseidon, god of the seas, to curse Odysseus, no making it nearly impossible to return to Ithaca on the seas without Poseidon killing them. Also, later in the story, Poseidon causing them to land on the island of the Laestrygonians, leading to 11 out of the 12 ships to be eaten. Odysseus’ pride got the better of him, and his crew payed the price. A leader has to control a group, and Odysseus lost all of his group, losing all of his credentials to be a good leader. Polyphemus was a great example of Odysseus’ arrogance, but the bag of winds is even

Logic In The Odyssey

...Odyssey The first thing Odysseus has in common with today’s hero is, being logical during situations. On page number 885 in the Odyssey it says, “But as I sent them towards Scyllca, I told them nothing, as they could do nothing. They would’ve dropped there ores in a panic.” (Homer,885) During this scene, Odysseus had to decide if he wanted all his men to die by Charybdis or have six men die by Scyllca. He made the logical decision not to kill all his men, but let Scyllca kill six. This scene reminds me of the hero Katniss from the movie Hunger Games. When Katniss is trying to get inside the capital, she needed people to help her. In order for her to get inside, she needed a distraction. There was people, from other districts who wanted to help...

How Is Odysseus A Hero

...Odysseus lived in the late bronze age of the 13th century B.C and he played a major role in the Trojan War. He committed to fighting in the war and being away from his wife for 20 years. Odysseus’s idea of the Trojan horse helped the Greeks defeat Troy. I feel like Odysseus was a hero because of his contribution to the war, his idea of the wooden Trojan horse, and his loyalty in a spiritual and physical sense. Odysseus was a hero because of his contribution to the war. Without him, the Greeks would have had many complications during the fight. He first had an immense grudge on fighting in the war. An oracle told him that if he fought, he would fight for 20 years and return home as a beggar. He started to pretend he was mad so he started to plow his fields to avoid the war. Unfortunately, the Greeks weren’t going to accept Odysseus not being in the war. One day, Palamedes put his infant son in front of the plow and Odysseus finally gave up his grudge and contributed the next 20 years of his life to the war. Along with him joining, he persuaded Neoptolemus and Philoctetes to join in battle. Odysseus was a very reliant fighter....

There is many supporting evidence to prove all sides of the debate and opinions held of Odysseus. It is of my opinion that Odysseus is a hero for his homeland, his family, the Greek people, and for us to learn from to this day. To support my reasons for my topic I want to explore Odysseus in the physical strength he had to overcome extreme conditions that he faced on his journey. For example, during one part of his voyage, Odysseus came upon the Sirens. He knew that if he gave into the temptation of their song, he would be killed. Odysseus An Epic Hero

...In The Odyssey by Homer, our protagonist Odysseus embarks on a journey back home after the Trojan War. During his adventure, the hero encounters many obstacles including both gods and monsters alike and must overcome them. Throughout this quest, Odysseus embodies the characteristics of a traditional epic hero in that he is clever, enduring and determined. Odysseus’s intellect is difficult to overstate. He is not the kind of person that constantly relies on physical strength alone to be victorious. He is also quite knowledgeable as well. During the epic, Odysseus is able to overcome several physical obstacles using his mental prowess alone. One prominent example of this is when Odysseus confronts the cyclops Polyphemus. When the one-eyed brute traps the hero in his cave,Odysseus offers him wine from his ship. This puts Polyphemus in an intoxicated sleep and give Odysseus the opportunity to strike. He and his men use a large staff they find to blind the giant. “Straight/forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it/deep in his crater eye” (ll.376-378). Polyphemus screams out in pain....

...Odysseus is an exceptional hero who holds a number of traits that make him so. Some of these being his courage, leadership qualities, and his sharp intellect. He also possesses negative qualities, as every moral does, like his unfaithfulness and his overbearing self pride. His journey back to his home and family in Ithaca from the Trojan war is a long and treacherous one. On this journey he has shown these traits and proved his heroic ways. A few positive traits that Odysseus holds are courage, leadership qualities, and an immensely sharp intellect. On his journey he encounters many horrific monsters, such as the 6-necked Scylla in book 12. He steers his ship directly at this creature knowing that 6 men from his ship will be slain. Embarking on his vast journey, he had left his faithful wife and newly born child to fight in a vicious war. The Odyssey is a Greek epic which captures the boundless journey of Odysseus, as he strives to return to Ithaca after battling in the Trojan War. Homer had been a prominent writer who had expressed the vast legends and myths of Greek gods and goddesses and captured Odysseus’ endless adventure, the challenges and temptations he had experienced throughout his journey, and the reflection of his most exceptional and imperfect qualities. As Odysseus had embarked on an endless journey filled with misery and agony, to battle in the Trojan War, he had been greatly praised and celebrated by many Ithacans and his homeland. However, although Odysseus had been greatly praised and portrayed as an outstanding individual and king throughout Homer’s epic, his actions and desires had undoubtedly reflected the worst qualities and aspects of his character. Comparing Gilgamesh And The Odyssey

...What is a hero? Is a hero someone with superpowers? Not exactly, a hero is a man or a woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities. The stories of “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and “The Odyssey” are tales of two different heroes from two different periods. Gilgamesh and Odysseus are both considered heroes, but they have different abilities and accomplishments. Gilgamesh was the king of Uruk in Babylonia, on the river Euphrates in what we know today as Iraq. He lived about 2700B.C. Gilgamesh was considered a hero because of his amazing physical strength and fighting ability. The author describes Gilgamesh as “superior to other kings, a warrior lord of great stature…” (The Epic of Gilgamesh Page 32 Tablet 1 Line 27). Gilgamesh used his strength and stature to defeat powerful beings. One example would be his victory over Humbaba, the monster who guards the Cedar Forest. He fought this beast to build a reputation on his quest for immortality. Another example is his triumph over the Bull of Heaven that Ishtar sends to destroy the city after being mocked by Gilgamesh. He was also considered a hero by the way he protected his men. The author compares Gilgamesh to a “strong net, the protection of his men” (The Epic of Gilgamesh Page 32 Tablet 1 Line 31). He took care...
