Argumentative Essay - Of Mice and Men

John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, centers around migrant farm workers George Milton and Lennie Small on their search for work in the Salinas Valley of California. Friends since childhood, George and Lennie settled for work on a ranch where troubles soon arose. While trying to protect Lennie, George was faced with a crippling decision and upon great consideration, shot Lennie in the back of the head. George made the right decision killing Lennie because, on his own, Lennie would not be able to take care of himself. Also, George realized that due to the fact that Lennie killed an innocent girl, they would not be able to run away from the problem this time. Some people may argue that George did not make an acceptable decision in killing Lennie, however, if George did not kill Lennie, …show more content…
George knew that Curley was fixed on catching Lennie and making him suffer for his loss. After Curley found his wife, he became furious with Lennie, “I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. … I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts. Come on, you guys.” (96). This rant from Curley alerted George that Curley was not going to stop looking for Lennie at all costs and proves that George had a solid reason to kill Lennie and end his life peacefully. As Curley was carrying a shotgun he turns to the men and says, “‘All right, you guys,’ he said. ‘The nigger’s got a shotgun. You take it, Carlson. When you see ‘um, don’t give ‘im no chance. Shoot for his guts. That’ll double ‘im over.’” (97). The orders from Curley to shoot Lennie in the gut make it clear that Curley will not let George and Lennie run away from this. Curley also makes George come with him so that he knows that George isn’t in on the plan and will not try to run away from the ranch and help Lennie

Of Mice and Men Argumentative Essay

...Of Mice and Men Argumentative Essay If you were to take a random adult from today’s developed world, it would probably be safe (albeit judgmental) to say that he or she has stress and concerns. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Lennie is a man with incredible physical strength, but unusually low intelligence. He travels in a duo with his childhood friend George, but often is under his companion’s jurisdiction. He often seems to be controlled by George, but is usually happy to comply, and leads a relatively comfortable life with his friend looking after him. In life, Lennie the weak is more fortunate than his more powerful peers, because his mental weakness leads to a humbler and happier life. The weak live an inherently modest life. Those who are weak cannot be selfish or proud, because they have little or nothing to be selfish or proud of. For example, the mouse in the poem To a Mouse Robert Burns has a “small house” (Burns 19), and only wishes for a “small bit of leaves and stubble” (31). It only has the ability to attain small things. Therefore, it can only have little pride. Furthermore, this is demonstrated in the novel Of Mice and Men. Lennie, who is arguably the weaker one due to his extreme dependence on George, for the most part, has humble wishes in life. Although he shares his big dream of owning land with George, he often just wants to pet soft things, which is why he obsesses over small furry animals (Steinbeck 10). His wishes are quite simple, especially...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...
