In the book, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, George made the correct decision when he shot Lennie. One of the first reasons it was good that George shot Lennie was because Curley was going to shoot him anyways but the way Curley would have shot most likely wouldn’t have killed him right away and then Lennie would have just suffered. “I’m going to shoot the guts outa that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand . I’m gonna get ‘im”(Steinbeck). That quote proved the first reason because, the way George shot Lennie, Lennie was killed instantly. If Curly were to shoot him, he would “shoot the guts outa him”. Lennie would have ended up with a extreme amount of pain and suffering and George didn’t want that. The second reason it was good for George to shoot …show more content…
If George wouldn’t have shot Lennie himself and just let Curly do it then he would have felt a huge remorse and regret that he didn’t do it himself. Even though it was in George’s best interest to shoot Lennie himself other people might argue that George shouldn’t have shot him, because Lennie didn’t mean to kill Curly’s wife. Even though Lennie didn’t mean to kill Curly’s wife and that he was just thinking about making George mad, he still killed Lennie. In what time period this event happened, Lennie could either be killed without the law getting involved or if they took him to Jail, they would most likely kill him too. And, if him and George ran away and started somewhere else, they would eventually run out of money or they would think George had something to do with it and end up killing both of them. “All the time he don’t bad things, but he never done one of ‘em mean”(Steinbeck). This quote proved how they opposite position was wrong. Yes, he didn’t do it intentionally, but he still did it and he needed to be stopped before he hurt anyone else. All Lennie did was rely on George and work. That’s all he did. (Steinbeck) All of the evidence stated shows that George

Of Mice And Men Quotes Analysis

...Quote analysis: Pull directly from quote, connect to topic sentence, connect to thesis. Discrimination in Of Mice and Men All throughout American history, minorities have been mistreated. In the John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, prejudice influences the way the ranchers treat others. Curley’s Wife, Crooks, and Candy are excluded because of gender, race, age, or disability. This bias results in these people feeling lonely and inferior. In Steinbeck’s novella, multiple characters experience alienation due to discrimination by other ranchers. Throughout the novella, Curley’s Wife is isolated from the male workers several times due to her gender. This is portrayed when the men in the bunkhouse argue with Curley about his wife, when they try to avoid Curley’s Wife because they view her as a nothing more than a distraction because they think her beauty is her only valuable characteristic. Carlson says, “Why’n’t you...

Of Mice And Men Quote Analysis

...Is there a proper time to shoot one's best friend, even if it is the right thing to do? In Of Mice and Men shows loyalty, obligation, and love. George wouldn’t allow the others to shoot Lennie, even when Lennie killed many animals including Candy's dog. Does he mean to? But George's love for Lennie made him have to do the right thing and let George die happy, in the place where his memory of the dream farm. So was George doing right? In the novel George went from being Lennie’s caretaker, to have to kill Lennie the right way. So George went from being loyal to being obligated. In the beginning of the book George was loyal to Lennie, and still is through most of the story. Lennie said, “I thought you was mad at me, George.” “No” said George “no Lennie, I ain’t mad. I never been mad, and I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want you to know” (Steinbeck 106). This...

Of Mice and Men

...Of Mice and Men The short story “Of Mice and Men” is written by author John Steinbeck and was first published in 1937. In the story we follow the two main characters George and Lennie’s attempt to fulfil The American Dream doing The Great Depression. The fame of the book has lead to the making of a film based on the book. The film is very similar to the book, however some things have been omitted. This is one of the main focuses of this analysis along with a comment on The American Dream as a theme. The filmatisation of “Of Mice and Men” leans close up to its book. Many times films are often twisted a lot and new scenes are added. However, after reading the book and watching the film this is not the case here. While you watch the film, you remember a lot of the quotes from the book, which are often said word by word. The director has, however, chosen to change the order of some of the scenes though they are the still same. This gives a different dynamic to the story in the film compared to the book. The scene with the girl in the red dress who cries out loud about Lennie, and forces him and George to run away, is an example(p 42-43.). A few more incidents happen before that specific scene in the book, but it is one of the first ones in the film. There is one very characteristic scene in the book where Lennie has run away and starts to hallucinate. He believes his dead Aunt Clara emerges from the bushes along with talking rabbits, which are also a huge symbol in the book...

Of Mice and Men Analysis

...Anon 6.3.15 Per. 2 Literary Analysis: Of Mice And Men In the book Of Mice And Men here are many there are many ropy that take place in this novel, for example the mental health of Lennie. The character Lennie helps the author John Steinbeck, show how people with mental health issue would've been treated in those days by Lennie's childish behavior and the affect it has in his actions , how he's dependent on George and the way he's treated, his forgetfulness and the outcome of the novel. The behavior of Lennie is childish as it's demonstrated in this quote."Lennie who had been watching, imitated George exactly. He pushed himself back, drew his knees, embraced them, looked over to George to see whether he had done it just right. He pulled down his hat a little more over his eyes, the way George's hat was." He's trying to copy George just like a child copies their parent. Since Lennie was watching George, he was trying to copy the position that George was in. When Lennie is copying George's position, Lennie looks over to George to make sure that he's "done it just right." Therefore George treats him like a child. On the other hand, everyone else but Slim and Candy don't treat him like so. An example of that would when Curley mistakens Lennie's smile as if Lennie is making fun of him. But that's not the case because he is smiling over the idea of taking care of the bunnies. Therefore Curley ends up picking a fight with Lennie and loses. In the book it shows that...

Femininity In Romeo And Juliet

...In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare explores the topic of femininity. The tragedy takes place during the fourteenth century in Verona, Italy. Society in Verona has clear beliefs and expectations for both males and females. Women are often regarded as inferior and weak whilst the men focus on violence and sexual domination, always expected to be prodigious and valiant. These stereotypical gender roles relate to main characters Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers who are pressured into acting the way their gender is depicted throughout the play. In this text, Shakespeare asserts that acting feminine is seen as weak. Feminine characteristics are depicted in such a way because the Capulet servants talk about their...

Steinbeck Creates Sympathy in of Mice and Men

...Steinbeck creates sympathy in Of Mice and Men. Discuss in relation to one character Of Mice and Men is a novella set on a ranch in the Northern western state of California written by Californian novelist John Steinbeck and then published in the late 1930’s. Set in the time of The Great Depression and The nationwide effective Wall Street Crash the book features characters all around who have depressing lives but focusing in on two paradoxical characters that are always juxtaposed to one another. Steinbeck has placed us with two characters that we are able to connect with, being able to sympathise with their dilemmas and problems as the two being long-time companions with a strong relationship but also being a priority to George as he must look after Lennie seeing as he has a mental dis-order. George Milton & Lennie Small being the two ranch workers who always find themselves fleeing from town to town, ranch to ranch; never being able to settle down they find themselves moving up northwest after Lennie gets himself into a bit of trouble back in their previous location Weed. As of after he winds up in a situation where he saw a red dress of a nice fabric that he had liked and decided to grab, this frightening the woman and resulting in her screaming rape and leaving Lennie and George with no other option but to run away as he too would have faced the death penalty as being an accomplice of Lennie. Suffer the Little Children

...Joseph Fitzpatrick 4/22/2015 Poetry Analysis 1.Gretel in Darkness Listening to Gretel voice I believe she may have post-traumatic stress disorder. She cannot get the idea of the killing out of her head. She seems like she is praying to Hansel to help her with her guilt. She seems to want to wash away the pain of killing even though she knows what she did was right. 2. Suicide Note The speaker apologizes to her parents for not being a strong man. She believes that if she were a boy her parents would not have been disappointed with her less than perfect grade point average. The attitude she displays to her parents is on of despair and resignation. 3. The World is Too Much With Us The speaker feels that people have lost touch with nature because of modernization of the world. He thinks that man is wasting away because of how he has touched every piece of land the eye can see. 4. Porphyrias Lover This poem reminded me a lot of the short story “The Lottery” in regards to situational irony. The poem begins with the narrator observing a beautiful woman who he wants very much to love him. He then changes from the observer to a crazed psycho participant. 5. Ozymandias This is a different type of situational irony. The irony here is one of beliefs. That a boastful king can build a monument that will last forever. The poem shows that the king is silly to believe he can stop time. 6. Pied Beauty The poet uses words to describe...

Holocaust was a period of unspeakable horror and infernal ramifications which were not only felt across Europe but also in places like Laos. When I began this term paper, it was meant to be a study of the literature pertaining to this period of Nazi regime in Poland during World War II. What it turned out to be was a account of implacable and starkly real evil. A subject that has inspired countless movies, novels, real-life accounts, memoirs and poems, the holocaust continues to haunt the imagination of the world even today. ...A Guide to Writing the Literary Analysis Essay I. INTRODUCTION: the first paragraph in your essay. It begins creatively in order to catch your reader’s interest, provides essential background about the literary work, and prepares the reader for your major thesis. The introduction must include the author and title of the work as well as an explanation of the theme to be discussed. Other essential background may include setting, an introduction of main characters, etc. The major thesis goes in this paragraph usually at the end. Because the major thesis sometimes sounds tacked on, make special attempts to link it to the sentence that precedes it by building on a key word or idea. A) Creative Opening/Hook: the beginning sentences of the introduction that catch the reader’s interest. Ways of beginning creatively include the following: 1) A startling fact or bit of information  Example: Nearly two hundred citizens were arrested as witches during the Salem witch scare of 1692. Eventually nineteen were hanged, and another was pressed to death (Marks 65). 2) A snatch of dialogue between two characters  Example: “It is another thing. You [Frederic Henry] cannot know about it unless you have it.” “ Well,” I said. “If I ever get it I will tell you [priest].” (Hemingway 72). With these words, the priest in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms sends the hero, Frederic, in search of the ambiguous “it” in his life. 3) A meaningful quotation (from the book you are analyzing...
