According to James Truslow Adams, who was and American writer and historian in the early 1900s, the definition of the American Dream is that “life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement (Adams). “But the American Dream is a tough concept to understand because the dream could be different for different people, such as Lennie and George who have two different dreams. Also the American Dream during the 1930s was tremendously difficult to accomplish. For instance someone living in the 1930s, like Lennie and George, had to work very hard for their American Dream to come true. But although the American Dream is different for everyone, Lennie and George struggled to try to accomplish their American Dream. In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie had two different dreams that gave them enough strength to never give up. Lennie’s dream was he wanted a life that was more simple and easy going. Lennie seemed to be more excited about the dream than George was because whenever Lennie would start talking about tending the rabbits on the farm George would sometimes get aggravated and yell at Lennie. According to Catholic belief, the saintly man would go straight to heaven whereas the repentant man would have to be cleansed through temporal (not eternal) punishment for his sins before entering heaven. Where is this done? He can't be sent to hell because hell is eternal per Scripture (Matthew 25:46; Mark 3:29). There has to be a middle ground so to speak. This "middle" ground is purgatory. We must suffer for our sins just as Christ suffered for them (Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 1:5-7). If this suffering is not in this life, it has to be in the next. Protestants say that since purgatory is not mentioned in the Holy Bible, it doesn't exist. But the Holy Trinity is not mentioned in the Bible either yet almost all mainstream Protestant denominations believe in it. Unfortunately, the King James Version of the Bible mistakenly omits the Books of Maccabees. These books were decided by the Church Fathers to be inspired of God. The Twelve Apostles used the Septuagint (Greek) canon - almost every single quote from the Old Testament that is cited in the New is from the Septuagint - this canon INCLUDES the First and Second Books of Maccabees (as well as five others). He drew some of his ideas from his work experiences (manual and unskilled) whilst supporting himself through college. His circular novella follows the lives of George Milton and Lennie Small who were two itinerant workers searching for jobs during the ‘Great American Depression’ of the 1930’s. Life was very hard during this time so people had to find work where they could, however low paid. It considers their relationship with both each other and the people they meet at the ranch. As the novella progresses the reader learns the significance of earlier events and gradually the novella moves towards the tragic ending. The first two pages that Steinbeck has written, transports you to the place where you are first introduced to George and Lennie. It creates a clear image in your mind of the surrounding countryside and its beauty. The opening pages of all books and plays need to engage the reader almost immediately if the reader is to continue.
