Oil Painting Intro Terminology:

For each term or phrase below answer both what it is and why it would be used.

-Direct Painting
A style of painting where layers of wet paint are applied to more layers of wet paint (wet on wet painting)

-Indirect Painting
Indirect painting involves procedures in which the final effects in a picture are built up gradually by placing several layers of paint, one over the other.

-Toning a Canvas
Toning your canvas before beginning to paint can help make a more dynamic and cohesive finished work. It involves chooses a tone for your piece and creating an under layer of paint

-Blocking (or color blocking)
Color blocking means blocks of solid colors worn together

-Alla prima or Wet on Wet
Wet-on-wet, or alla prima is a painting technique, used mostly in oil painting where layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint.

-Fat over Lean (also, what makes a paint “fat” or “lean”)
'Fat' oil paint is paint straight from the tube.
'Lean' oil paint is paint mixed with more turpentine than oil.

Brush types:
-Filbert
A brush with bristles forming a flattened oval head, used in oil painting.

-Flat
A flat brush has bristles that are arranged so the brush is quite wide but not very thick.

-Bright
Flat ferrule, short-length hairs, usually set in a long handle. Width and length of brush head is about equal. Useful for short, controlled strokes, and with thick or heavy color.

-Round
A round paint brush is the most traditional brush shape enabling you to paint fine lines and detail with it.
