Change the Lives of Older African American Women for the Better
The racial and ethnic diversity of the older population is rapidly increasing as the overall minority population grows and experiences longevity. Aging people of color often experience triple jeopardy (Rainey 2015). This suggests being a minority, a woman and old could have triple disadvantages. For instance, older African American Women are one group that experiences this. The lives of this particular group experience disadvantages; such as, their overall Health, financial freedom and access to an education. Methods to improve on the lives of this minority group include: providing a better healthcare system, withdraw from the disadvantages women receive in the work field and offer …show more content…
Due to a great number of African American living in poverty, women are often deprived from receiving an education. At a young age they are expected to help around the house with laundry, cooking, and cleaning (Center for Social Services Research). When they become older and try to apply for job, they are denied the majority of the time. As mentioned in the text, unemployment rates for African Americans of all ages are far higher than those for whites, and have been for many years (Hillier and Barrow 2015). In order to lower the statistics, the government should set up programs aimed to provide access to free education as well as programs to help in placing them in the work field. Just because they are older doesn’t mean they should be discriminated from receiving an education. This will allow in guiding them to locate proper jobs they are able to meet as well as gain the skills and knowledge needed to obtain a …show more content…
According to the article, Minorities Striving for Financial Freedom, “72 percent of African-American women have not attained “financial success.” This problem is greatly influenced by the lack of equality they receive in the workplace. In today’s society, women are still being paid less than men; add the factor of being black, the wages continue to decline. Due to their low range history, women have less money to invest than do men (Hillier and Barrow 2015). By enforcing equal pay in the work field, women would also have the opportunity to invest their money. In addition, low retirement income contributes to their financial freedom. This may result when an individual is expecting a child, they may take time off of work “Women are more likely than men to leave jobs before becoming invested in retirement plans” (Hillier and Barrow 2015). A solution to this would be to mandate paid leave after child labor. According to HG.org Pregnant employees are entitled to paid maternity leave of 410 calendar days for each delivered child.
