Course Description

Provides an introduction to international banking, financial markets, global government, and private financial institutions. Covers the financial functions that multinational corporations, government agencies, and other organizations use in their funding and investment activities.

Participation And Tardiness Berkeley College requires instructors to take attendance.
Students are expected to attend and participate in all of the classes. Regular attendance and participation in the discussions are very important. The ability to discuss with the professor and fellow students the issues related to the topic of the course is an important part of the learning strategy. Consequently, a portion of the final grade will reflect an evaluation of the frequency and quality of the student's participation in classroom discussion. To be better prepared for the discussion, students must read the assigned material prior to attending the class. Berkeley’s short, intense semesters require consistent attendance. Berkeley’s policy states that there are no excused absences – only absences due to true emergencies of significant importance are allowed and they indeed need to be proved.
If illness, accident or similar circumstances require absence for three or more consecutive days, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the Advisement Department as well as the Instructor. Students arriving late or leaving early will be so noted. Every two notations, whether late or early, will equal to one absence. Unjustified absences in excess of three will result in the lowering of your final grade by one grade letter. Further absences will have the same consequences. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Instructor and the Academic Office of absences in advance and/or as soon as they become aware of their inability to attend. It is the responsibility of the student who arrives late to have the recorded absence revised to late status at the end of class. Thus it is strongly advised that students attend classes regularly, and leave themselves an attendance cushion in case an illness or emergency occurs. It has happened! If you know at the start of the course that you will have trouble meeting this requirement, perhaps you should not enroll in the course.
Students are responsible for all that transpires in class whether or not they are in attendance and whether or not the material is covered in the text. Students are responsible for all class lecture and discussion content; copies of the instructor’s lecture notes are not available to students. Other classmates should be contacted to determine the content of information missed during the period a student may have been absent from class.

Grading Policy

Students’ knowledge will be evaluated through the use of quizzes, exams and in-class discussions. There will be eight quizzes given during the course. Each quiz will be given at the beginning of the class and will cover subjects dealt with in the previous class. The results of each quiz will be reviewed the subsequent class. The purpose of the quiz is to give students an opportunity to slowly learn each chapter’s topic and to be tested on it as we go along. There will be a mid-term and a final exam. Students will be allowed two hours for each exam, which will contain questions on topics already dealt with within the quizzes, albeit with different wordage. Quizzes and exams must be taken when scheduled; students arriving late for class will have less time or no time at all to complete the exam. No make-ups are allowed. Students will earn points for performance on class participation, quizzes and exams. Credit Hour Assignment Policy Course work performed outside of the classroom (such as reading, studying, writing papers, doing projects or receiving tutoring) is critical to academic success. While the time requirements for individual students may vary somewhat, a general rule of thumb is that students should spend about three hours outside the classroom for every hour required in it.

SafeAssign as a Learning Tool

SafeAssign helps prevent plagiarism by providing both the student and the professor a feedback report that compares any student work submitted through the software with a comprehensive database of books, journals, websites and papers written by other students. Some of the writing assignments in this course will use Blackboard’s SafeAssign software to help students improve their skill at paraphrasing statements contained in research on a topic and to help increase awareness of the proper use of citation when a student writes a paper using ideas or statements taken from a research source.
For any assignment requiring research and/or requiring more than two pages of writing, students will be expected to submit that assignment through SafeAssign in Blackboard, following the submission guidelines given with the assignment instructions. Prior to submitting a final draft of an assignment, students will have the opportunity to submit several drafts of that assignment to SafeAssign in order to get sufficient feedback from SafeAssign reports to help minimize the risk of plagiarism.
If the assignment continues to have evidence of plagiarism in the final draft of the assignment, the professor will file a report to the Department Chair documenting the use of the paper as an action of academic dishonesty. If a student fails to submit an assignment to SafeAssign, the professor will assign a grade of zero for that assignment. By submitting a paper to SafeAssign, that paper will become source material included in the SafeAssign database.

ePortfolios at Berkeley College

Communications

Communications between students and professor will be carried out only and exclusively through Blackboard and Blackboard email.

Meetings with the professor, typically before or after scheduled classes, can be set up by appointment, arranged through a previous email message exchange.

Classroom Etiquette

NO FOOD IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASROOM.
The classroom is a place for open, thoughtful and respectful discussion and exchange of ideasfree from distractions, rude or unprofessional behavior. Each student is encouraged to bring forward contrasting viewpoints but at the same time he/she is expected to respect the point of view of other students and the instructor. Students are encouraged to express their ideas in a concise and professional manner. Questions are also encouraged and should be asked at the appropriate time, during or after a presentation or a lecture.The code of conduct and relevant excerpts from the Student Handbook are incorporated into this syllabus by reference.
The class is expected to ‘self-regulate’, and individual students may be encouraged by fellow students to adhere to the implied class code of professional conduct.
Explanations of unbecoming behavior should not be offered during class; ‘making excuses’ is behavior not expected of students that aspire to become business professionals.
Distracting/disruptive behavior includes but is not limited to: a. Side conversations separate from the class discussion. b. Not remaining seated during class. c. Leaving the class without a real emergency. Students who leave the class more than once per class session may be prevented from returning to the classroom for the remainder of the class session, yet the student will remain responsible for all material covered during that class. d. Sleeping during class as noticed by classmates and the instructor. Students who cannot remain awake through a class will be counted as absent for that class session. Distracting/disruptive behavior on a consistent basis is likely to result in a student being placed on Probation and/or dismissal from the class with immediate recommendation to Advisement that the student be withdrawn from the class roster.
