Course Registration System Problem Statement

As the head of information systems for Wylie College you are tasked with developing a new student registration system. The college would like a new client-server system to replace its much older system developed around mainframe technology. The new system will allow students to register for courses and view report cards from their personal computers attached to the campus LAN, or from any machine on the Internet (such as the machines in the school library). Professors will be able to access the system to sign up to teach courses as well as record grades.

Due to a decrease in federal funding the college cannot afford to replace the entire system at once. The college will keep the existing course catalog database where all course information is maintained. This database is an Ingres relational database running on a DEC VAX. Fortunately the college has invested in an open SQL interface that allows access to this database from college’s Unix servers. The legacy system performance is rather poor, so the new system must insure that access to the data on the legacy system occurs in a timely manner. The new system will access course information from the legacy database but will not update it. The registrar’s office will continue to maintain course information through another system.

At the beginning of each semester students may request a course catalogue containing a list of course offerings for the semester. Information about each course, such as professor, department, and prerequisites will be included to help students make informed decisions.

The new system will allow students to select four course offerings for the coming semester. In addition, each student will indicate two alternative choices in case the student cannot be assigned to a primary selection. Course offerings will have a maximum of ten students

Price Differentiation and Two Part Pricing Strategy of Amazon

...headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It is the world's largest online retailer[1] that started as an online bookstore, but soon diversified, selling furniture, food, toys, and jewelry among other things. [2] The company also produces the popular Kindle e-book reader and the Kindle Fire tablet computer—and is a major provider of cloud computing services. [3] Amazon is considered the fourth most successful startup company of all time by market capitalization, revenue, growth and cultural impact.[4] Amazon’s e-commerce strategy is multi-level. In its annual summary, Amazon stresses that “It believes the main competitive factors in its market segments include selection, price, availability, convenience, information, discovery, brand recognition, personalized services, accessibility, customer service, reliability, speed of fulfillment, ease of use, and ability to adapt to changing conditions, as well as our customers’ overall experience and trust in transactions with us and facilitated by us on behalf of third-party sellers”. [5] The key to realizing and achieving all these factors lie in Amazons strategy. This paper will explore how Amazon is employing price discrimination and two- part pricing system as its strategy to realize its goals on profit. Background In order to maximize their revenue, Amazon has to first learn about the reservation price of each individual or groups of consumers they are selling to. Reservation Price is the most money an individual is willing to pay...

...Computerisation Strategy Proposal for the new TVU/LSHT training hotel (2009) 1. Introduction The aim of this report is to look at the possible implementation of computer and information technologies at the Thames Valley University, London School of Hotel Training (TVU/LSHT). This has become necessary because the business has experienced a severe downturn in revenue since 2009 which has resulted in them experiencing trading losses and a lack of investment in both the business and the facilities. Consequently, it has been recognised that a new strategy needs to be devised; which will include the development of new facilities, the enhancement of existing facilities and the introduction of a hotel wide computerisation system which will maximise the hotels operational efficiency. This proposal will specifically present the Consultants vision for the effective and successful introduction of information technology within the TVU training hotel; it will also take into account the increasing statutory obligations that it needs to meet. According to Wood and Brotherton (2008, p.331) Lodging businesses can no longer expect to succeed without the solid support of information technologies (IT), this is true for a variety of reasons but is partly because the current customers that the lodging establishments are looking to attract are part of the Net Generation, these people are surrounded in their daily life by IT, if these people are not provided with the technology that they...

...Indian Education System: What needs to change? What do we need to change about the Indian Education System? Education has been a problem in our country and lack of it has been blamed for all sorts of evil for hundreds of years. Even Rabindranath Tagore wrote lengthy articles about how Indian education system needs to change.  Funny thing is that from the colonial times, few things have changed. We have established IITs, IIMs, law schools and other institutions of excellence; students now routinely score 90% marks so that even students with 90+ percentage find it difficult to get into the colleges of their choice; but we do more of the same old stuff. Rote learning still plagues our system, students study only to score marks in exams, and sometimes to crack exams like IIT JEE, AIIMS or CLAT. The colonial masters introduced education systems in India to create clerks and civil servants, and we have not deviated much from that pattern till today. If once the youngsters prepared en masse for civil services and bank officers exams, they now prepare to become engineers. If there are a few centres of educational excellence, for each of those there are thousands of mediocre and terrible schools, colleges and now even universities that do not meet even minimum standards. If things have changed a little bit somewhere, elsewhere things have sunk into further inertia, corruption and lack of ambition. Creating a few more schools or allowing hundreds of colleges and private universities...

Hospitality an Tourism Industry

...HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM INDUSTRY Danielle Bates Darrin Stern HTM 100 03/10/2013 Managing a restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland has many operational challenges. Restaurants deal with food, people and are a vital part of our everyday lifestyles because we are a society on the go, we visit them several times a week to socialize, as well as to eat and drink. It is a serious combination because people are very sensitive about their food and service. Several different challenges come to play in the restaurant industry. These challenges include regulatory issues, social concerns and competitive issues. Regulatory issues are laws and systems that have been established to help ensure that the food served in restaurants is safe. Bacteria develop very easily if given the chance. The local Health Department will send out inspectors to make certain that the chefs and waiters are following the appropriate guidelines. Inspectors will issue penalties for minor violations and can shut you down for major violations. Some restaurants prepare for health inspections by holding random drills in which a manager or another member of the staff conducts a random mock inspection of the restaurant. This is designed to keep employees on their toes, and to identify problems, which will be spotted by the health inspector. Practice inspections can be performed using the same checklist utilized by the health department, to ensure that all aspects of a real restaurant health...

Kill the Indian, Save the Man

...Special Collections, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA Students prepared to march into the academic building at the Carlisle Indian School. O f the various attempts in history that were made to solve the so-called "Indian problem" (relocation and extermination primary among them), an attempt at forced assimilation was made using education in the late 19th century. After the Civil War and Indian wars, most Native Americans were confined to reservations, reduced to a helpless state, and the American government knew little of what to do about the Indians' future status. Historian Francis Parkman once wrote in 1851 that "the aborigine was by nature unchangeable and by fate doomed to extinction." A Civil War veteran named Richard Henry Pratt believed that the Indians could become a contributing part of the population through education. He started the system of Native American boarding schools as an effort to follow through with his advocating efforts of "assimilating the red man through total immersion." Pratt's goal of "assimilation" was to systematically strip away any trace of tribal culture and to train them to become "useful" in American industrial society. "Transfer the savage-born infant to the surroundings of civilization and he will grow to possess a civilized language and habit" he wrote; more succinctly put, "Kill the Indian, Save the Man." His philosophy brought about the Carlisle Indian School, the first off-reservation boarding school, once located in Carlisle, Cumberland...
