In the short story, “A rose for Emily”, William Faulkner opens the scene at Ms. Emily Greison, the main characters funeral. Faulkner takes the readers back to the past events leading up to her death. Throughout the short story many references were made about time, this allowed readers to gain a little insight on the era in which the story took place and also an idea about the characters roles and so forth. The constant reference to the changes in time also suggests that there would be a dramatic change in Ms. Emily Greison’s attitude towards the other characters and her own character.
In the beginning of the story, also the end of Ms. Emily’s life her characteristics are defined as cold and distant, throughout the story readers also see that Ms. Emily remains cold and distant. The narrator refers to this in his opening statement says, “When Ms. Emily Greison died the whole town went to her funeral-“. At first this suggest that the character was favorable amongst her peers but then it is quickly justified when the narrator says “The men through a sort of respectful affection and the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house.” This justification shows the lack of empathy town’s people had for the character, and the distant relationship Ms. Emily had with the town’s people. Without saying too much, readers can infer that Ms. Emily was not favorable amongst her peers and that she was so closed off that nobody had seen the inside of her house for quite some time. As the story continues the narrator takes readers back to two years prior what seems to be a dramatic change in Ms. Emily’s life. The town’s-people suggest that Ms. Emily is being courted by a gentleman named Homer Barron and because of that change; she will also change in character. In scene III, the narrator states, “We were glad that Ms. Emily would have interest”. The wistfulness in the narrators tone suggest that if Mr. Barron courts Ms. Emily that the outcome may be positive. Unfortunately that change in Ms. Emily character never comes; she remains just as cold and distant until her dying days.
Her attitude towards the characters in the short story also remains the same despite the change around her. At the end of Scene I and beginning of Scene II, readers see the first interaction between Ms. Emily and the town’s people. The narrator says “So she vanquished them, horse and foot just as she vanquished their fathers thirty years before about the smell”. Readers can see the author’s reference to time, there had been two generations that Ms. Emily lived through yet her demeanor and attitude towards the town’s people remains the same between the two generations. Again the narrator references time. In scene IV, the narrator says “The daughter and granddaughters of Colonel Sartories contemporaries were sent to her with the same regularity” and he continued on by saying, “The newer generation became the backbone of the town……the paint pupils fell away and did not send their children”. In this example, the contrast between regularities within the two generations where in the older generation, girls went study art versus the newer generation that didn’t, suggest the changes in times periods. Through these examples readers can see that the period in which Ms. Emily lives has evolved and changed but also leaves readers to believe that maybe Ms. Emily has also changed with the times.
The narrator gives insight to Ms. Emily’s life through the town’s people’s eyes. The readers can feel the anticipation the town’s people have when they constantly await and gossip for a change in Ms. Emily, whether in her character or her attitude towards the towns’ people. The author uses time as a theme to help capture the anticipation for change. He takes you through different time periods in Ms. Emily’s life and readers can see the change around her, not just in time periods but in regularities, as well. For example painting-a regular activity which was once popular amongst young daughters of the town’s people is an activity that over time diminished, but through all the changes in and around the story, Ms. Emily character remains the same. In the end it is inferred that Ms. Emily killed Mr. Homer Barron. This act infers that Ms. Emily is just as cold and distant in the beginning as she was in the end.
Overall the author’s constant reference to time in this story symbolizes Ms. Emily Grieson’s inability to change or rather regard for change, despite what the town’s people wanted. The author tells the story though town’s-person eyes because he wants the readers feel the same anticipation the town’s people feel. He builds an illusion through a time scheme method to suggest that maybe the main character was different once upon a time. Surprisingly enough his message to readers show that though there are changes around Ms. Emily, a person who is set in their ways no matter how hard you wish and want and wait, that doesn’t mean the change will come.

Only Time Will Tell

...Only Time Will Tell Global warming is a topic that is affecting our world today at an alarming rate. We are seeing drastic temperature increase, receding polar ice caps, depleting ozone layers and habitat destruction. These things are all major issues that have become increasingly important because of global warming and there are numbers to prove that this is not just a hoax like some people believe. Increasing levels of Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere are raising the average temperatures on earth. Receding polar ice caps and rising water levels are destroying habitats for many creatures like the polar bear and other Arctic animals, and even are going to begin to destroy our own communities and space for living because there will be less land. Deforestation is also crippling animal populations in the tropics and forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. All of these things are major issues that fit into global warming and these things must change if we wish to not destroy this planet. One of the major causes of global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases. The main gas that is responsible for global warming is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This gas is emitted from various things, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, energy production and factories. It is because of the Industrial Revolution, the burning of fossil fuels became central to the drive of economies. Starting in England in the late 18th century, factories began...

...look at the role of women in the play we must look deeper in to the roles of the only two women in the play; Calpurnia, wife of Caesar, and Portia, wife of Brutus. Both of these women are key in foreshadowing the murder of Caesar. After Caesar's murder we do not hear much of either of them. The main thing Caesar's wife, Calpurnia does in the play is tell Caesar to stay at home on the day of his murder because of many unnatural events that have taken place the night before and because she has had nightmares about his assassination. On the morning of the ides of march is the first time we meet Calpurnia, her entrance is act 2 scene one when she tells Caesar "You shall not stir out of your house today." Caesar decides he shall "forth" until Calpurnia tells him why he shouldn't go to the capitol today. Some of the reasons she included were: A lioness "whelped" in the streets. Graves opened and showed their dead people. Warriors of fire fought on the clouds and drizzled blood upon the capitol. Horses neighed and dead men groaned. Ghosts shrieked in the streets. She than showed her discomfort with these things by saying "O Caesar, these things are beyond all use, / and I do fear them." Caesar says these are just as much to him as to the world in general, but Calpurnia insists that when beggars die nothing happens, but when princes die the heavens are ablaze. Caesar says that cowards die many times before their death and death will come when it will come. Then Caesar asked a servant...

...First, Sarah tells about how she, her brother and their friends used to play behind their childhood home after school when they were kids, how they’d always played a stage play about King Henry VIII of England and Anne Boleyn, the second wife of him. The childhood was the good times with all their friends and fun. Everyone was very excited to play Anne in the play, even the boys, included her brother. Sarah would love to see her brother play the role, but something made her unsecure to want to watch it. “It was almost worth giving up the role yourself just to watch Terry give it his all, and it might have been, if it weren’t for the execution scene.” To watch her brother being executed wasn’t funny, not even in a play. Next, she tells about her life right before and after her brother became sick and died, and as she tells more about the situation, she was in, she seems more and more disappointed in the behavior of her family and friends. “Everyone but me seemed to know what was coming”. ...Running Head: HOW TO TELL YOUR BRAND’S STORY Assignment 1: How to Tell Your Brand’s Story: Four Questions You Must Answer Pat Smith MKRT 5000 - Marketing 24 January 2012 HOW TO TELL YOUR BRAND’S STORY ARTICLE SUMMATION Beth McKenna writes an impressive article on bringing to light the nuance of telling your company’s brand story, which can be referred to as story generation. In the past, companies had only 30 seconds of commercial time to tell their story, using the same format with the big five: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. With commercials, companies only had a limited time and limited ways to advertise. Today, technology has expanded and changed the face of how to tell the story of a company’s brand. But what the writer discusses is how to “cut the clutter” and effectively “evoke feeling” and create a story which the audience can feel a part of the product. In addition to commercials, a brand story can be discussed in depth and length through the internet, on social media blogs such as Facebook and Twitter, allowing the audience to provide feedback and opinions. As the article progresses,, Beth McKenna elaborates on the need for companies to evolve their planning processes to follow four questions to be evaluated before a company develops its story. First, the planning stage is critical to the formation of the story. Beth McKenna’s main emphasis is how critical it is to...

Cmst Interviews

...simply asking me, "Tell me something about yourself." Peter never used any closed questions during the interview. I believe he did that because he wanted to get the most information out of me in the allotted time we had to speak with each other. I think the lack of closed questions was effective since we only had a few minutes to speak and a bunch of closed questions would have given peter little to work with when choosing his partners. As I explained before, Peter only used open-ended questions, and it was effective in getting high quantities of information about me. He used questions like, "Are you a leader or a follower, and explain why." I replied that I was more of a follower because I have great communication skills that allow me to increase group cohesion and optimize group output. Another open question he asked was, “Tell me about your strengths.” I replied by saying that some of my strengths are my social skills, determination, and my reliability. He was pleased with my group of strengths. Peter ended the interview by letting me know he would strongly think about picking me as a partner. I think it effective by letting me know how I did immediately. We were cut off by the timer, but he did what he could while everyone was starting to shuffle around. Overall Peter did a great job figuring out certain qualities that I have that could translate into his group. ...The Fortune Telling Truth of Gryphon The history of fortune telling dates back to the early fourteenth century. Tarot cards were commonly used in the practice of fortune telling during these times. This practice of fortune telling through the use of tarot cards is the main topic in story Gryphon. Although the practice of fortune telling with use of tarot cards is not widely used or believed in today, the story Gryphon by Charles Baxter tell a story of a substitute teacher named Ms. Ferenczi and her fortune telling practices. Dishonesty In Che Ti Dice La Patria And The Killers

...In this scene, the waitress that took their order wondered if Guy had like her (Hemingway 294). Hemingway writes “He adores you, I said. But he doesn’t speak Italian. ‘Ich spreche Deutsch,’ she said, and stroked Guy’s hair . . . ‘Tell her we have to go,’ said Guy . . . My friend is a misogynist, I said, an old German misogynist. ‘Tell him I love him’” (294). Since Guy cannot speak the waitress’s native language, the narrator takes advantage of it. He does this by telling the waitress things that Guy did not tell him to say and making the girl believe that Guy actually likes her. This is what makes the waitress flirt with Guy and it makes him uncomfortable. When Guy wishes to leave the narrator keeps informing the waitress about Guy, by telling her that he is an old German misogynist. He has fun with this for a while, because both Guy and the waitress think that he is telling the truth. This shows how dishonest men are towards their friends and...

How to Tell a War Story

...Richie Burner ENWR-106 How to Tell a True War Story 26 February, 2013 If you don’t know how to analyze writing and don’t understand metaphoric speaking then this is not a story for you. O’Brien constantly goes against every Americans thoughts of a war story; he tells the reader that they’re all fake. O’Brien believes war stories don’t actually have to do with people do with heroic things, because every solider is a hero. The average person who was not in combat would not get a true war story because no one has experienced what soldier’s experience. They have seen things and felt things emotionally that no other person will ever see or feel. A ex soldier out look on life is completely different than your average person because they are use to different life style. So all this boils down to one thing, no one will ever understand soldier’s and O’Brien uses “How to Tell a True War Story” to prove this. Through out the story O’Brien talks to the reader as if they don’t know anything. Although he has to approach the reader like this so he can thoroughly explain his point. Since no one understands a soldier’s life he has to write this way, the misunderstanding of soldiers is proven within the first page of the story when rat explains his friend to his sister in a letter that he sent her. “ Stainless steel balls, Rat tells her. The guy was a little crazy, for sure, but crazy in a good way, a real daredevil, because he liked the challenge of it, he liked testing him self, just...
