HANDY’S TV, INC.

Mary Starr, manager of Handy’s TV, Inc. was talking to her two salespersons Jeb Lake and Betty York. The conversation went as follows: (Read the whole case before attempting to answer any questions.)

I. Mary Starr: Sales are really down this month. We have to do something to move our stock.

II. Jeb Lake: Let’s cut prices. The stock would move if we had the lowest prices in town.

III. Mary Starr: It would also cut profits. We’ve got to do something else.

IV. Betty York: How about advertising on TV? After all we have never tried that before. V. Mary Starr: That’s too expensive. We need some type of gimmick.

VI. Betty York: Like what?

VII. Mary Starr: Something that will get people into the store.

VIII. Jeb Lake: Frankly, Mary, I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about.

IX. Betty York: Neither have I.

X. Mary Starr: Well I’m not sure. I guess I was thinking of decorating the store front in an exotic motif. Let me see. Aha! I’ve got it, a gate to heaven in our enterance way and a great wall as a background to our window displays. Would you make some sketches of that for me Betty? (MARY STARR THEN LEAVES.)

XI. Betty York: I guess I can display the gate to heaven in a humorous light with St. Peter watching our new RCA color sets. On the wall around heaven I can put some sales grafitti.

XII. Jeb Lake: As a good Christian I would be turned off by such a display. To me it borders on the sacriligious. You and Mary could never sell me on making fun of God. (LATER BETTY SHOWS HER SKETCHES TO MARY STARR)

XIII. Mary Starr: These sketches are really cute Betty, but you misunderstood what I wanted. I told you we need a Chinese motif with a heaven gate and the great wall of China in the show windows. Didn’t you understand that Jeb?

XIV. Jeb Lake: Frankly, Mary I think a religious motif will turn potential customers off. XV. Betty York: Ignore the resident moralist Mary and describe what you mean by a Chinese heaven gate. I think I know what you want in the great wall now.

XVI. Mary Starr: The heaven gate is shaped like a key hole with a large circular top, narrow straight sides, and a squared-off bottom.

XVII. Betty York: A key hole! The circular part of a lock is solid and the place you put the key is jagged and narrow. I don’t see how we can make a doorway out of a key hole.

XVIII. Mary Starr: I don’t mean a regular key hole Betty, I mean a key hole like we have in the door to our store room.

XIX. Betty York: Now I understand. So that’s what a heaven gate is: They have one of those going into the bar at Fong Kee’s Mandarin Restaurant. Now I can make the sketches like you want.

XX. Jeb Lake: Hoo ray for Chairman Mao!

One point each.

...Applied Research Experiment: Organizational Behavior The Effects of Stress and Job Performance on Organizational Structure By: Andrew F Abstract This applied research experiment is going to test how the effects of stress relates to job performance among different job positions and how it can ultimately affect a company’s organizational culture. It involves conducting a field survey with 10 to 15 questions which will help gather information to help prove or disprove the theory. The survey questions will involve different aspects of stress in the work place and how it can lead to poor job performance and negative organizational structure. Introduction The theory on how stress and job performance will affect a company’s organizational structure is that both stress and job performances are correlating variables which can affect each other. The higher volume of stress with in a position, the more it will affect a person’s job performance negatively. This will in turn affect the company’s organizational structure. Organizational structure is defined as: “The division of labor as well as the patterns of coordination, communication, workflow and formal power that direct organizational activities” (McShane/Von Glinow 386). It is believed that there are many different factors that cause stress for each job position whether it is a managerial position or just a regular employee. Stress is defined as: “An adaptive response to a situation that is perceived as challenging or...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal "My paper is going to be about how to improve motivation and performance in the workplace". Overview of the Organization The organization that will be the topic of my discussion is George Weston Limited. The segment that I will be discussing about is Weston Foods segment, specifically western manufacturing branch in Calgary, Alberta. Starting in 2007 Alberta job market had a huge boom due to the oil and gas industry. Lots of people move from all over the country to Alberta as there were many well-paying jobs. That created huge problems for Weston Food Manufacturing as they were not able to compete in wages and benefits with oil and gas industry. Due to the large increase in the population housing demand increased and house prices went up more than 100%. Living in Calgary became very expensive...

Overview of Management and Organizationa Behavior

...how the experiences in this class will shape my future interaction especially in the workplace. For me, the purpose of the MGT 501 course is to present a systemic knowledge about people and workings within organizations that can be used to enhance individual and organizational effectiveness in the work place. MGT 501 introduced organizational behavior from several perspectives in the sense of explaining the meaning and the reason why organizational behavior is useful. It showed me how to develop skills in organizational behavior like leadership skills, personality and learning skills. It also presented a frame work of understanding the field. A very important aspect of this course was to be able to make sense of any organization in which l am placed or l find myself in the future. I believe without a doubt that after taking this course, l can adequately answer questions as to what is going on within an my organization at least from a human stand point. Apart from helping me understand what management and organizational behavior is all about, the course has also helped to be familiar with information about how organizational behavior is acquired. For instance, an understanding of the leadership theory would explain why one person is a more effective leader than another. Organisation Behaviour

...There are many definitions of Organizational Behavior (OB). In order to develop a personal operating definition of OB, I read several definitions to help form a framework of what OB means to me. The definitions I read ranged from the very complex to the very simple. Along with many OB definitions, there are also many different types of research. Mole noted four assumptions that are used in all OB research (2002). 1. Behavior is predictable 2. Behavior is caused 3. Behavior has many causes 4. Generalities can be made Personal Operational Definition With the above assumptions, as well as the concept that OB is a combination of different fields of behavioral sciences, I developed the following operational definition of OB. The study of Organizational Behavior is to observe, analyze and learn, what variables influence individual behavior, at both the individual and group levels, and understand how it affects the behavior of the organization. I will use this operating definition in my organization as we plan to make a major software change. The process is underway to replace the maintenance software system with an updated software so that a purchasing package can be procured that will integrate the two. By observing the behavior of the employees, I will be able to better understand the cause of their resistance to change. I will recommend a cross functional team to address all the concerns and determine what features of the old software are important and should be...

...APOLLO .W. MBOGO ( MOI UNIVERSITY)------- Organizational behavior Organizational behavior refers to the study of people and their behavior in the organization and their work place. Organizational behavior is an aspect that deals with great range of disciplines which includes management sociology, psychology, and communication. Organizational behavior brings about achievement of highest performance and good results due to the application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organizations and workplaces. As a result it brings they work harmoniously together as a family thereby bringing high achievement If a manager is assigned to manage an organization, it is necessary for him or her to understand how the organization operates. Organization may refer to the combination of science and people. While science and technology can be predicted, human behavior in an organization cannot be predicted. This is because human behaviors arise from needs and value systems of people. Organizations refer to people this means that without people organizations would not exist. This means that if managers want to understand the organizations in which they work, they must first understand the people who are the constituents of the organizations. People are the most valuable assets of the...

Stages of Change

...manager who wants to encourage efficiency and the highest standards of service? A stage of Change Model as proposed by Prochaska and Colleagues for addictive behaviors consists of six dynamic stages. The six stages are: Precontemplation, Contemplation, preparation, action maintenance, and termination. Precontemplation is when an individual is not considering making any changes. Contemplation is the time when an individual is aware there is a problem and is considering taking action to resolve it. Preparation refers to the time when an individual commits to taking action sometime within the next 30 days. Action is the busiest time. There are noticeable efforts to change the targeted behavior. Maintenance is the stage when a person tries to stabilize the behavior change and prevent relapse. Termination is the final stage, this occurs when there is zero temptation to revert back to the old behavior. Empathy and Social Learning

...Running Head: EMPATHY AND SOCIAL LEARNING Developing Empathy: Nurturing Through Social Learning Abstract This paper explores the Social Learning Theory and how prosocial behavior, specifically empathy, is cultured through observation, modeling and imitation. Empathy is defined through a review of Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiment, Jeremy Sloan’s article on developing empathy and the impact it has on animals in our world, and an assessment of empathy in future criminal justice professionals. All provide evidence and data to support the finding that adults have lasting influence on children and how ones behavior is formed. Empathy is a vital trait and it’s a primary requisite for successfully managing daily experiences. Key words: Empathy, Modeling, Social Learning, and Development Introduction The development of empathy allows us the innate ability to relate to another’s experiences, motives and feelings. It is the foundation of compassion and caring, and is monumental in many of life’s challenges and successes. It is what allows us to learn from others and become responsible, caring adults. Foundations of Behavior

...Behaviorism, Humanistic and Psychoanalysis. The Humanistic approach began as a movement in the 1950's meant to take a healthy, or holistic, method to understanding the nature of what it is to be human. This perspective addresses values important to humans: love, compassion, creativity, etc. It is considered the third force of Psychology, the first being Behaviorism and the second being Psychoanalysis. The founders of the Humanistic theory were Abraham Maslov and Carl Rogers. They concerned themselves with the psychological well-being of a person, it focused on being able to realize your full potential or 'self-actualization'. This concept had a huge impact on psychology as we know it today because it concerned itself with areas of human behavior that other theories ignored. "The humanistic perspective values the integrity of each individual" (Editorial Board, 2011). It is believed that you could lose yourself because you become preoccupied with the notion of gaining acceptance from others. When you, as a person, are so consumed with being accepted, you tend to mold yourself and become something and someone that you are not. "The Humanistic perspective saw humans as being intentional, that they seek to have a sense of purpose and value" (Career Education Corporation, 2010). One of the therapeutic methods...
