USIS Organizational Analysis My organization being discussed throughout this paper is USIS also known as US Investigations Services. As an employee for USIS for almost ten years, there were ups and downs like in any organization. However in the past five years up until Sept 30th, 2014 when the Investigative Services Division shut down the company was on a downward spiral. According to “Usis” (2015), “Since 1996, USIS has been a preeminent source of comprehensive litigation support services in the legal services market.” USIS was at one time one of the leaders in the field of background investigations. That was until The Office of Personnel Management chose not to renew any of the contracts they had with USIS. Ineffective Management lead to the downfall of USIS due to the company being under criticism for allegedly pushing through investigations to cut corners, a whistleblower lawsuit filed against the company, and The Office of Personnel Management holding the contractor liable to taking federal money and not completing their job (Davenport, 2014).
USIS Organizational Management Design The organizational design that USIS used was the chain of command. “The chain of command is the line of authority extending from upper organizational levels to lower levels, which clarifies who reports to whom.” (Robbins & Coulter, 2012, Chapter 10). The Investigative Services Division of USIS was first broken down into two different sections. One section was known as Review, and the other section was known as the Field. In each section, there were different teams. Each team had a Team Leader, who reported to the National Operations Manager, who reported to the Investigative Services Division President. There is Functional Structure, which has each portion of the organization grouped according to purpose. There is Divisional Structure, which divides the organization by geographic area or types of product or market.
