1. What must a manager determine about a subordinate before deciding to move the subordinate into the developmental cycle? How can a manager determine that this action should be taken?
Managers must decide the performance readiness level of the subordinate so he can see where in the development cycle he or she needs to begin. “The role manager’s play in developing the performance readiness level of their people is extremely important.” (Text p. 184) The manager must also determine whether or not the problem or lack of progress of the employee or it’s the management technique that has been used to this point. “Too often managers do not take responsibility for the performance of their people, especially if they are not doing well.” (Text p. 184) Once the manager has looked at all aspects and determined the performance readiness level of the subordinate then the development cycle can begin. Managers can determine that this action should be taken by looking to see if the employees are meeting the objectives or responsibilities that he or she made clear when setting goals for the organization.
2. How can a leader recognize a regressive cycle, and what should the response be?
Leaders can recognize a regressive cycle when an individual or a group is becoming less effective than before. The leader needs to respond by using an appropriate leadership style for the current level of performance readiness of the employee or group. The regressive cycle should be taken one step at a time. “In both the regressive and developmental cycles, we should be careful not to jump from delegating (S4) to selling (S2)” (leadership styles, text p. 200) Leaders need to be sensitive to the employee and make sure that the employee doesn’t have a personal problem that is bringing down his or her performance.
