A proprietary system has to rely on the software and equipment it uses, which is licensed from a copyright. Therefore a proprietary operating system is specifically designed to work with each company that it is designed for, and nothing else. It is specific to their needs, and only that. Some examples are Windows and Mac OS X. A problem with this layout and design is that the system cannot be altered in any way; which is what can cause costly upgrades and repairs in the future, depending on the needs of the system and company that uses it. For the users that are not very technical, this is the better operating system to choose, since it is a lot easier to use. There are more options that are available as far as the settings for the system. Proprietary has more appeal to potential users, since it is specifically designed for each company individually. However can be more of a pain, since there aren’t the capabilities allowed to make changes within the system due to its design.

Open Source Operating is cheaper, they don’t have to have licensing and also don’t require a specific format; unlike proprietary requires. An open source operating system does permit changes to be made, only after it is downloaded for the company that is using it. An example would be Linux that is used on a personal computer, or even Android for any mobile devices. . There are also more options that are available as far as the settings for the system, which do require more work to be involved. A benefit to open source is that the way they are designed, is to be able to operate on almost any computer, unlike proprietary systems have to be on a specific computer. Basically since Intel processors have been associated within Mac, Windows can now be operated on them. Another example is with Android and its operating spectrum of various devices, unlike iOS only compatible to work with the

...he iPhone (pron.: /ˈaɪfoʊn/ eye-fohn) is a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It runs Apple's iOS mobile operating system, known as the "iPhone OS" until mid-2010, shortly after the release of the iPad. The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007;[14] the most recent iPhone, the sixth-generation iPhone 5, on September 21, 2012.[15] The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard. The iPhone has Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity (2G, 3G and 4G). Other functions—games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, etc.—can be enabled by downloading apps; as of 2012, the App Store offered more than 700,000 apps by Apple and third parties.[16] There are six generations of iPhone models, each accompanied by one of the six major releases of iOS. The original iPhone was a GSM phone, and established design precedents, such as screen size and button placement, that have persisted through all models. The iPhone 3G added 3G cellular network capabilities and A-GPS location. The iPhone 3GS added a faster processor and a higher-resolution camera that could record video at 480p. The iPhone 4 featured a higher-resolution 960 × 640 "retina display", a higher-resolution rear-facing camera and a lower-resolution front-facing camera...

Apple Ios

...Arvind Kumar 7th semester [C.S.E. 1707372 Department] ABSTRACT iOS is Apple's mobile operating system developed originally for the iPhone, and later deployed on the iPod Touch and iPad as well. It is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system, by nature. In iOS, there are four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The operating system uses roughly 500 megabytes of the device's storage. Version 4, announced in April 2010, introduced multitasking as well as several business-oriented features, including encryption for email and attachments. At the WWDC 2010 keynote on June 7, 2010, Apple announced that iPhone OS had been renamed iOS. Apple licenses the trademark for "iOS" from Cisco Systems (who own IOS), the same company with which Apple had earlier settled a dispute over the "iPhone" trademark. iOS 4 was released on June 21, 2010, three days before the iPhone 4. Staggering product launches reduces strain on Apple's servers. iOS 4 is the first version of the OS to be a free upgrade on the iPod touch; Apple had charged $9.99 for earlier upgrades. Apple previously announced that iPad users with 3.x software would receive a free upgrade to the next major (4.x) release. New features...

Critical Analysis of Apple Computers

...computer hardware and Smartphone industries by designing, manufacturing and marketing high quality products. Apple keeps up with the fast paced changes in technology, constantly offering updates and releasing new devices. The purpose of this analysis is to determine best practice and lessons learned to apply to enterprise information systems management. Through a thorough investigation of the organization, I was able to determine that Apple, Inc attributes a great deal of its success to its heavy reliance upon their customer relationship management (CRM) system. Apple puts its customers at its forefront and designs its practices and products around their wants and needs. Apple also depends on its enterprise resource planning tool, SAP. SAP is interfaced throughout multiple parts of the organization including order confirmations, shipment confirmations and inventory management, allowing Apple to function like a well oiled machine. Apple did not get ahead by selling more products than its competitors; instead they offer higher quality products at higher prices. The analysis of Apple taught me that quality supersedes quantity in information systems management. Though Apple has dominated the technology industry, they have made several mistakes that have also shaped the organization. Apple...

Future of Symbian Os

...Future of Symbian OS lthough Symbian is still the most popular OS in the world, it is often overshadowed by Apple␣s iPhone and Google Android operating system. Its future looks very dim as it has lost 18.8% of its market share in 2011 Q2 shipments compared to 2010 Q2 shipments (BBC, 2010). Symbian once dominated the smart phone market, having shipments more than all of its competitors combined. Symbian benefited from better battery life and lower hardware requirements that its competitors since it was born. But it is no longer competing to be the best phone OS, or the best smart phone OS, it␣s now competing to be the best OS for internet phones (TechCrunch, 2010). Great internet phones like iPhone and Android include better web browsing, better multimedia, and apps of all shapes and sizes and as well as better UI to make all that content accessible. Symbian has never been an OS for internet phones. The Symbian definition of a smart phone was a phone with PDA functions. The browser was always a second class citizen, a third-party component ␣ Opera by default in the early days (TechCrunch, 2010). And long before it was made open source, the platform had a well earned reputation for being hard to program but this was hugely beneficial to Symbian as a business in the early days. 80% of Symbian␣s revenues were earned through consulting for licenses (TechCrunch, 2010). Symbian␣s licensees each had their own proprietary telephony chipsets that needed to be integrated and their own...

Smartphones Operating Systems

...Operating system : An operating system (OS) is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function. Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources. For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware and will frequently make a system call to an OS function or be interrupted by it. Operating systems can be found on almost any device that contains a computer—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. Examples of popular modern operating systems include Android, BSD, iOS, Linux, OS X, QNX, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone, and IBM z/OS. All these, except Windows, Windows Phone and z/OS, share roots in UNIX. Smartphone A Smartphone, or smart phone, is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a feature phone. The first smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA), including email...

Will Smartphones Benefit Classroom Learning

...smartphone into classrooms as a learning tool. Many schools do not allow this to happen in their curriculum because they can become a distraction, but I believe that smartphones can be beneficial for classroom learning. The first touch screen smartphone was Ericsson R380, which ran the Symbian operating system in 2000. This smartphone had no speakers, headphone jack, expansion card slot, Bluetooth, camera, or GPS (global positioning system). The R380 did support e-mail and SMS (short message service) and it also had voice memo, an organizer, and calculator software. In 2007, the release of Apple’s iPhone was the device that really brought smartphones into the mainstream. The following year, Android smartphones were released, slowly becoming the overall number one OS (operating system) in the United States. (Shinder, 2013) Shinder states, “That as smartphones gain innovative technologies and functionality, they become more complex, resulting in numerous issues and problems.” She goes on to say, “Options and features added to their operating systems make interfaces more complicated to use, which may frustrate users.” (2013) One of the biggest problems that users had about the Windows Mobile OS was that it was too complicated and difficult to use while, iPhone’s simple interface has been credited with...

...Symbian is an open-source (EPL) mobile operating system (OS) and computing platform designed for smartphones and currently maintained by Accenture.[5] Symbian was originally developed by Symbian Ltd.,[6] as a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed. The current form of Symbian is an open-source platform developed by Symbian Foundation in 2009, as the successor of the original Symbian OS. Symbian was used by many major mobile phone brands, like Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and above all by Nokia. It was the most popular smartphone OS on a worldwide average until the end of 2010, when it was overtaken by Android. Symbian rose to fame from its use with the S60 platform built by Nokia, first released in 2002 and powering most Nokia smartphones. UIQ, another Symbian platform, ran in parallel, but these two platforms were not compatible with each other. Symbian^3, was officially released in Q4 2010 as the successor of S60 and UIQ, first used in the Nokia N8, to use a single platform for the OS. In May 2011 an update, Symbian Anna, was officially announced, followed by Nokia Belle (previously Symbian Belle) in August 2011.[7][8] On 11 February 2011, Nokia announced that it would use Microsoft's Windows Phone OS as its primary smartphone platform, and Symbian will be its franchise platform, dropping Symbian as its main smartphone OS of choice.[9][10] On 22 June 2011 Nokia made an agreement with Accenture for...
