Post traumatic stress disorder is a term that many people are familiar with. We hear this on the news or read about it the newspaper from time to time. Post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD for short is often included in conversations discussing people who have survived some sort of life threatening danger or trauma. the generalized definition of post traumatic stress disorder is, “an anxiety disorder some people get after seeing or living through a dangerous event.” The purpose of this paper is to give a more in-depth definition of post traumatic stress disorder by examining the definitions that professionals in the psychology and psychiatry field have developed as well as the symptoms, or requirements a person must have in order to truly be diagnosed with PTSD. The purpose of my research is to find the reason that soldiers who have served in wars are often diagnosed with PTSD.
There is a vast amount of information and studies on the subject of PTSD, with each professional developing their own definition. The National Institute of Mental Health Defines post traumatic stress disorder as a common anxiety disorder that develops after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. They go on to say that family members and friends of the person involved in the trauma can also experience PTSD. In order to truly be aware of what post traumatic stress syndrome is, it is important to understand what symptoms or factors the person must have to be diagnosed. The first set of symptoms are classified as re-experiencing symptoms in which the person can have flashbacks, bad dreams or frightening
