Knowledge Gap According to research by Carter, DiFeo, Bogie, Zhang and Sun (2014), there is an existing knowledge gap in the education, early detection and diagnosis of ovarian cancer in women (Carter, DiFeo, Bogie, Zhang, & Sun, 2014). The challenge of diagnosing ovarian cancer arises from the ambiguous way symptoms present, and the knowledge deficit existing among women and health care providers (Carter, DiFeo, Bogie, Zhang, & Sun, 2014). This knowledge gap has contributed significantly to the late diagnosis of ovarian cancer (Carter, DiFeo, Bogie, Zhang, & Sun, 2014).

A correlational study is a quantitative design method. The quantitative design method has 4 types of studies: descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental (Waters, n.d.). In the correlational study, 2 or more quantitative variables are used to determine if a relationship between the variables (Waters, n.d.). The above research question examines the relationship between the variables ovarian cancer knowledge/education (such as risk factors and symptoms) of Nurse Practitioners and early detection of ovarian cancer. A correlational study would determine if there is a positive correlation between these two variables. This means that increasing the knowledge/education of Nurse Practitioners would correlate with an increase in the early detection of ovarian cancer (Siddharth, 2011). It could also determine if a negative correlation exists, which would mean that an increase in Nurse Practitioner education would lead to a decrease in early detection of ovarian cancer. No correlation could also be determine, meaning no correlation exists between these two variables (Siddharth, 2011). A correlation coefficient would be used to determine if there is a strong positive correlation or a strong negative correlation. A final value of +1 would determine a strong positive correlation, while a -1 value would determine a strong negative correlation, …show more content…
The aspects of the study would be described to them in this letter. Of the ones in agreement to participate, consents would be obtained, and ovarian cancer education would be provided to them by a certified oncology specialist. In order to evaluate their learning, a pre- and post-test assessment would be used (Mira, et al., 2012). Identical questionnaires would be provided before and after the education session and would help to determine the effectiveness of the training (Mira, et al., 2012). Once the practitioners have been successfully educated on ovarian cancer symptoms and risk factors, the next step would be to monitor and gather information on whether the education provided helps to increase the early detection and rapid referral of patients to gynecological cancer
