Starting your life in society can be a huge obstacle and there are many barriers to overcome to be successful. Instead of jumping right into the adult world you should know what to expect. It is more common to be successful if you plan ahead of time rather than going right at it. Some of these barriers that will try and hold us back include; years of experience, who you know, and starting capital.
While looking for jobs on the classified one of the most common requirements I saw was you must have at least two years of experience. Being an inmate or newly graduated student the odds are you never got the opportunity to get the experience needed. Most inmates became incarcerated when they were young so the years of experience are lacking. To fix this they may need to work up the corporate ladder to get the job. Some individuals may see this as to much work and avoid the high paying jobs that require experience. This obstacle can be frustrating for a new graduate because they just spent four or more years in college to work in this field but now they need years …show more content…
Most successful people didn’t get where they are from their own efforts, they were aided by friends or family. A newly released inmate faces a very hard challenge with connections. Released felons don’t have a high reputation in society and there aren’t many individuals willing to take the risk to help them become successful. Because of this inmates should be aware of events that will benefit the community and participate in these events. Hopefully they will make friends in the community and this will open up opportunity for them to be successful. For a newly graduated student this can also be an obstacle but students should have help with connections from the school. Moving into a foreign city or town will be hard but it might be wise for both the student and inmate to find work in a familiar place with friends and

Overcoming Obstacles

...In today’s society one problem that many have is the ability to overcome obstacles. This is not something that has just been introduced in the modern day. It has been prevalent in the lives of many for hundreds of years. It is only a part of life. As time evolves the ability to triumph over good or evil is the difference between those that sit at the bottom, and those that rise to the top. As in this medieval period, overcoming certain obstacles has been part of the human life cycle and is still present in the modern day. The Medieval period in which Hamlet took place demonstrates one character trying to overcome not only one obstacle, but many. Major conflict arises even at the beginning of the play. Although Hamlet has no control of what goes on between Gertrude and Claudius, in his mind a solution must ascend. After the cruel overtaking of power by Claudius, Prince Hamlet must find a way in order to avenge his father’s death. The truth has been exposed by a ghost resembling King Hamlet. Now it is time for him to strategize in order to find which solution is the best. Killing him would do the trick, but is that the answer? Some options arise in the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy. “Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them. (Shakespeare, Hamlet)” Prince Hamlet really struggles in this situation on his next move. As much as he wants to avenge his father’s...

A Successful Person

...NAME: ADE AJOSE COURSE: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 1 INSTRUCTOR: DR JACOB SIZI DATE: 02-09-2014 A SUCCESSFUL PERSON What really is success? What makes an individual successful? According to Merriam-Webster mini Dictionary, success is defined as, “the act of achieving something good that you have been trying to do, or something that has a god result or is very popular. The word ‘success’ originated in the mid-16th century from Latin ‘successus’ , from the verb ‘succedere’. The society at large thinks success is all about material things such as how expensive one’s car is, how large one’s house is or one’s social status in the society and financial freedom. However, success does not basically deal with material goods and properties, but is tied to broader concepts such as happiness, overcoming hardship and achieving certain goals. The true indicator of success is not determined by what an individual accomplishes but rather how the individual feels after an accomplishment. In other words, in order for one to be seen as successful, he or she must be happy or contented. For instance, if I look back at my life since I was born till this moment and I feel satisfied and happy with my current situation, I would consider myself a success. However, if I look back and I feel I could have done better and feel disappointed, I would not consider myself to be a success. Hence, success is directly proportional to happiness. Also,...

Overcoming Obstacles

...Turning an obstacle or disadvantage into a positive outcome will all depend on what the person decides to do with those obstacles, and how the person decides to react towards certain disadvantages. A person with a positive mindset may have the ability to gain knowledge and humility from those obstacles and disadvantages. When I was a child, I had always been dependant on my parents. I did not acknowledge that one day they were not going to able to provide for me, and I would have to become independent. For example, when my parents passed away, I no longer had anyone to rely on; therefore, I had to learn how to become an independent person. Consequently, I was so adapted to having my parents fighting my battles for me all the time; I soon realized I...

Overcoming Obstacles in Multicultural Management

...Overcoming Global Obstacles: Multicultural Management BUS600: Management Communications with Technology Tools Dr. Raj Singh April 23, 2012 Introduction As a result of globalization, the world in which we do business is increasingly becoming smaller and smaller. People are buying and selling goods, providing services, and communicating with others on a much more global scale. One hundred years ago it would have taken these people months to communicate, but today they can communicate with the press of a button. As our interactions with those from cultures much different than our own increases, communicating with one another creates obstacles we normally wouldn’t face when interacting with those from our own culture. This presents the peculiar problem for the business because it must train managers to effectively communicate within the constructs of different cultural norms and values. Communicating to others the importance of diversity in multinational corporations is a difficult task because it essentially involves asking others to reject the idea of their culture being superior to others. As O’Rourke (2010) points out, “failures in an overseas business setting most frequently result from an inability to understand and adapt to foreign ways of thinking and acting, rather than from technical or professional incompetence,” (p. 284). Regardless of difficulty, if a business...

I Did It!

... I had all but given up hope of getting an education until I met my boyfriend five years ago. He revived my dream so I could not only realize my potential, but show my three daughters how important it is to get a degree. It is important to me to continue my education to not only have a better quality of life for my children and me, but to teach them that no matter what, you have to get a college degree. As it states in (Overcoming the odds: Raising Academically Successful African American Young Women 2002, pg211 para 3)”Many of these mothers have been constantly concerned that someone, or some circumstance, might become an obstacle to their daughter’s success primarily because of the daughter’s race or gender. To address this concern, these mothers have sent an important message to their daughters: that obstacles and challenges are inevitable, but that individuals have the power to overcome the odds and succeed through hard work, self-discipline, and perseverance.” This is what happened to me. I let circumstances and people become an obstacle for me. This is one of the reasons I am going back to school, to set this example for my daughters. My children are bi-racial, and unfortunately, may face extra hardships growing up, and have more to overcome than others. I hope they learn that no matter what you face in life, you...

The concept of ‘Into the World’ invariably involves the transitions of individuals into new phases of life, worlds and experiences in order to attain growth, maturation and emotional development. During this transition individuals may encounter obstacles, but also gain personal rewards resulting in growth and maturity. The prescribed text, novel ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ written by JC Burke and two related texts, film ‘The Black Balloon’ produced by Tristram Miall and ‘The Road Not Taken’ written by Robert Frost, clearly display these misadventures and the rewards achieved once overcoming them. In difficult times individuals have must leave behind their old life and the safety it once provided in order to fully accept and enjoy their new life. ...in themselves. Being successful at what you do can also be very motivating. Success usually goes hand in hand with appreciation. If someone succeeds at what they do, they will most certainly appreciate it. This helps in striving to achieve more goals and for more success in life. To some people, success means being the best at what you can do. Just taking part and achieving regular standards is not enough. People who always want to be the best are usually the ones who achieve their goals, they put in hard work and dedication in everything they say and do. Success means more to some than others. Some people want to be successful by all means, not caring how hard or how long it takes. Others are satisfied by simply trying and giving what they believe to be their best whether they succeeded or not. Success only appears meaningful to those individuals with a purpose. One of their keys to success is to work on finding their purpose in life. The true meaning of success isn't just about becoming the best you can at what you do, but about knowing that you completed your purpose and goal. The meaning of success lies within you. Courage

...think most of the tales, stories and movies that we and our children are raised on have heroic and inspirational themes. The Bible tells of David battling Goliath, and The Wizard of OZ tells of the cowardly lion who must find courage to face the witch. There are other forms of courage such as when Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela spoke out against injustice, or people like Steve Jobs and Walt Disney took huge financial risks to follow their dreams. Courage ranges from physical strength to mental stamina. There are probably more kinds and examples of courage than what I'm going to talk about, but I'm just going to touch on a few. The first kind of courage is overcoming fear,so you can do what needs to be done. It could be something as small as overcoming the fear of speaking in public. Whatever your fear, it will take courage to face that fear. Fear of failure kept me from going back to school and furthering my education. Finally,at age thirty-eight, I overcame my fear and returned to school. I regret not doing it sooner. Nelson Mendela once said” I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”( qtd. Mandela) People feel fear all the time; for instance, soldiers and police officers are terrified at times, but they chose to be heroic anyway. I’m sure Martin Luther King was scared, but he stood up for what he believed...

Overcoming Racism

...1 Dagmar D’Agostino ENG4U July 19th, 2016 Overcoming Racism My ISU is focussed on the theme of racism. I have selected the poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou to provide perspective and insight to my chosen topic. Maya Angelou is an African American poet digging deep into not only the pain racism has caused during the days of slavery, but her own experiences with modern forms. This poem supports my chosen thesis sending a strong message to the hearer or reader with the authors use of tone, poetic devices, and distinct theme to convey overcoming racism. Maya Angelou has effectively provided several different tones which all tie together to contribute to the triumphant title and meaning of the poem. The first three lines begin the poem with disgust in the poor teaching of the history of race inequality. “You may write me down in history, with your bitter twisted lies, you may trod me in the very dirt” (1-3) describes Angelou’s frustration with the lack of truth history books hold about the subject of racism which she has experienced for her very own. However, she closes the stanza with “but still, like dust, I’ll rise” (4) to display strength despite her frustration. Angelou expresses a great amount of confidence and self assurance in her voice as she questions others confusion by her confidence. For example, stanza two reads: “Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room.” (5-8)...
