STRIKE MASTA ICE

This is the chronicle of my overweight cousin named Sir Fay Jai Gao. He was a sir who was addicted to food, gluttony was his greatest sin. When I have finally arrived at his kingdom, I've noticed how much he likes to aggrandize his fridge with rations that's more than enough for eight starving men. I insisted that he lay off the calories, however he infers that he needs the bloody nutrients. I tried to remonstrate my position by trying to educate him. His manner was erudite but he acts extraordinary sleazy which contradicts with his reasoning.

By mid-afternoon, the aura in the skies was delightful, as we set out to joust to the death. The peasants around the court was affable as we began our seemingly friendly game. During the middle of our duel, my cousin pleaded to stop as he was growing hungry as the Queen did, during her pregnancy. As the kind champ that I was, I said “good golly, sir are you mad!?” He laughed, tumbled on all fours, and right into the Renaissance Cafe! I pursuit him on my faithful steed, hoping to avoid a cause of an uproar of any sort, and as well as to purchase my cup of tea along with some exquisite buttered crackers.

As I stepped into the tavern, I witness the most horrific and grotesque image in front of my very eyes. What was in my cousin's arms could scar hundreds of unborn infants. It was as seems to be a contraband of snacks and sweets, carried by robbers from a bank. I halt him with each step he took, and explained how amorphous his shape will be if he continue to practice this dreadful feasting habit of his. The more persistent I was, the more resilient he became. As I am not his mother, I gave up, and watched him gobble everything in less than a second. This was truly an risky venture I would never attend twice in my knighthood.

Will most certainly land you in the obesity, having too much body fat (adipose tissue) category.1 Recently I’ve become very interested in obesity, curious why people are overweight. Is it because they just like eating large quantities of food, psychological reasons, the media, or is it genetics. The general questions: Why do people become obese? and why is the younger generation affected more? I needed to know these answers. Of course, the type of food and the amount of food we consume affects us in a great way: negatively and positively. One of the reasons leading toward...

Christmas Vacay

...There are only five people in our household plus my parents aren’t exactly the fun type of people so it wasn’t exactly a fun Christmas (as usual) but there was food so that saves everything. Oh and the priest went to our house to have dinner and it was awkward (hehehe). After eating, the second or third round I think, we exchanged gifts! Not really exchanged because my sister and I were the only ones who actually bought gifts since my parents gave us our presents 2 months ago. That was how we always celebrate Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, we went to my cousin’s sister-in-law’s apartment. We welcomed 2013 there. There was lechon! And lots of good food too which is always always the part I look forward to. We had fircrackers and my cousins and aunts and nieces and nephews were there and it was surprisingly fun. My family and I usually celebrate New Year like how we celebrate Christmas so for it to be different was really cool. We attended the mass for New Year’s Eve on...

What Do People Gain to Much Weight?

...Oramis Alonso Ms. Henry ESOL 0354 October 26, 2015 Why Do People Gain Too Much Weight? Why, even when many people try to imitate the perfect figures of stars on televisions shows, is most of people still overweight? This physical problem which affects children, teenagers and adults instead of decreasing is increasing year by year. I have been living in the United States (US) for three years and I have noticed a lot of fat people. Because I had not seen many fat people in my native country, Cuba, I want to know what causes Americans become overweight. Some of the most important reasons I found doing my search which contribute to why people gain much weight are: stress, drinking alcohol and not exercising. Stress -the way the body responds to any kind of demand or situations- leads people to eat more than they usually do. First, scientists have demonstrated that stress is related to lifestyle. It is not a secret that daily life moves quickly, as a consequence, people tend to have bad eating habits. In my personal experience as a student of Houston Community College (HCC), and an employee I have been affected by this problem, too. I usually do not have much free time, so I eat junk food for breakfast and lunch which has caused me to gain weight. Financial problem is another reason which causes stress and is related to lifestyle. Currently, the global economy is unstable, that means the economy is going down or up surprisingly. Many people waste money on things...

...knowledge. Knowledge that will benefit us all!" Babamukuru accepts all this praise graciously. Tambu is suspicious of her cousins, Nyasha and Chido, because of their English manners, language, and style of dress. She thinks they seem like snobs. Tambu becomes irritable - she feels distant from the reunion because she was not allowed to accompany her father to the airport. She tries to remember what her relationship with her cousins used to be like before they left for England, and she remembers loving them. However, in order to calm her resentment, Tambu retreats to the kitchen and busies herself with making a stew for dinner. This revives her confidence, and her female relatives are impressed with her acumen and work ethic. Tambu is given the task of carrying the water dish so that each family member can wash his or her hands before eating. She explains that there is a specific order that she has to follow. The men wash their hands first, beginning with the oldest and most senior, and the youngest wash last. This is because the water is cleanest at the beginning. Tambu, however, gets confused and makes many mistakes interpreting the hierarchy of power. She also resents her brother and cousins for eating with the men while the rest of the women and children are relegated to the kitchen. After dinner, the women gather in the yard to dance. Tambu invites her cousins to dance, but soon realizes that they don't understand the Shona...

Memoir

...special or exciting, going to day-care, then coming home and bonding with the family. Weeks passed without seeming like it, until my 5th birthday on April 2nd 2001. Every family member that had attended my aunts wedding 3 weeks before I saw again, all with the same happy expressions that I remembered from the wedding. The celebration was food filled and loud, I remember my uncle and a couple of my cousins passed out on the couch from all the food. The smile on my face didn’t fade for a long time after, everything just seemed better to me; the grass was greener and the sky was more clear. There is a point in a person’s life where it seems like nothing could go wrong, but that’s precisely when things went wrong for me. Exactly a month after my birthday, I was involved in a fatal car crash that killed both my grandmother and my younger cousin. On May 2nd 2001, I became the sole survivor of that accident. Mourning and praying began immediately, not a moment was wasted in mourning, it was the greatest loss to ever happen to my family. The day of the accident was a normal day, my cousin and I spent the day with our grandmother because our parents were working. We were driving to the mall because we begged and pleaded to go to the toy store; my grandmother finally gave-in and said “yes”. On the way there we were side-swiped by a truck; it killed both of them instantly. I had lost two of...

Meaningless Tradition in "The Rocking Horse Winner"

...Meaningless Tradition and Family Relationships Ashley von der Burg Lauer ENG 102 September 8, 2014 Both “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence and Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” demonstrate how social pressures and meaningless customs obscure values and destroy relationships within the family however, in “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” familial bonds are dissolved over a long period of time whereas the relationships in “The Lottery” are disregarded for only a short while once a year. Both stories are similar in that family relationships must submit to the customs of society though such customs have become meaningless over time. However, in “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, family relationships are disregarded and never reestablished. There is no sign of any intent to reestablish or build relationships in the first place. In contrast, the relationships in “The Lottery” are disregarded but reestablished shortly after and reestablished with intent to do so. In Lawrence’s “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, Hester is a member of an upper class society and in maintaining her perceived superior position, she fosters and insatiable desire for money. However, the upper class custom of keeping up a lavish lifestyle has become meaningless for Hester for when she comes upon more money, it fails to satisfy her and only sharpens her cravings. The relationships she has with her children suffer as a result. Hester is so consumed with greed that she is unable to feel love in her...

...Long time before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed on Philippine shores, our forefathers already had their own literature stamped in the history of our race. Our ancient literature shows our customs and traditions in everyday life as traced in our folk stories, old plays and short stories. Our ancient ancestors also had their own alphabet which was different from that brought by the Spaniards. The first alphabet used by our ancestors was similar to that of the Malayo-Polynesian alphabet. Whatever records our ancestors left were either burned by the Spaniards friars in the belief that they were works of the devil or were written on materials that easily perished, like the barks of trees, dried leave sand bamboo cylinders which could not have remained undestroyed even if efforts were made to preserve them. Other records that remained showed folk songs that proved the existence of a native culture truly our own. Some of these were passed on byword of mouth till they reached the hands of some publishers or printers who took interest in printing the manuscripts of the ancient Filipinos. The Spaniards who came to the Philippines tried to prove that our ancestors were really fond of poetry, songs, stories, riddles and proverbs which we still enjoy today and which serve to show to generations the true culture of our people Pre-Spanish Period The Pre-Spanish Period Historical Background     Long before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed or set foot on Philippine...

Effects of Deployment on Military Families: a Literature Review

...Effects of Deployment on Military Families: A Literature Review Rhonda Steffek Columbia College of Missouri Abstract This review examines the many issues and effects that military deployments have on families. The continuation of Middle Eastern conflicts require a constant flow of military operations in this region. Deployments cause military service members, which can also be spouses and parents, to leave their homes. This is usually for extended periods of time in support of combat operations away from their loved ones. Researchers report findings that show associations between deployments and increased alcohol and drug use, relationship and communication problems, and developmental delays in children. Deployments create strong emotional stressors, greatly impacting these military families. Military families may need to seek additional help from social workers to address the negative effects that deployments tend to create. A recommendation for future studies into the positive effects of deployments is also discussed as this can be useful for social workers to develop service plans. Keywords: literature review, military family, deployment Effects of Deployment on Military Families: A Literature Review Military families are exposed to a myriad of challenges that many civilian families never have to face. One of the greatest challenges is deployment. A deployment requires a service member to be separated from their family for extended periods of time...

Vacation

...Tarsha Strong English 1101/Mrs.Staton Reflective Essay 29 June 2013 A Memorable Bahamas Vacation Its 10:15 am, we are getting ready to board the ship. I am relieved to be standing after sitting in an RV for 10 hours while riding from Georgia to Florida. My aunts, cousins, and my mom are smiling and hugging each other because they are happy to see my family that we have not seen in awhile. We wave goodbye to my uncles as they drive off. As I walk toward the ship I become anxious and excited. I’m holding my luggage and smiling at the attendant. I look at my mom and say, “I can’t believe we are headed to the Bahamas.” We are standing in a long line waiting to check in our entire luggage. The security officers are making sure we don’t have things that are not allowed. Now that we are finished, my mom and I head to our room. We take the elevator to the third floor where our room is located. I open the door to our room and I see two twin beds with cute little animals on them made with towels. My mom has an alligator and I have an elephant. I take a picture and smile because I think this is so cool. Now its time for me to shower, so I sit my luggage on the bed, take out a nice sun dress, and head for the shower. First we head to the top floor of the ship. Everyone must do a safety drill. The captain comes on over a loud speaker and welcomes everyone to the cruise. Then he begins the speech of all the safety rules. The staff members are demonstrating how to use the life...

...economy. It holds it as a rule of creation that all men are not equal. Naturally it imposes a kind of unwritten discipline that those who are more able economically shall share some of the burden of those who are not. * The joint mess, naturally, runs on an understanding of mutual adjustment. Naturally those who are benefitted by the generosity of others remain obliged and grateful. * Similarly in a big joint family the study groups of boys are formed according to their age matching. Naturally the cousins study together, play together, quarrel together and are even punished together. As a result there grows in them a feeling of camaraderie that is free from any discrimination of one being a full brother or a cousin. * In marriages also the grooms for marriageable girls become a concern for all the elders in the family. Even if a daughter of a junior brother is selected by someone because of her beauty or brilliance, he would not agree to her marriage until her senior cousin sister is married. * As such the disciplines in a joint family are self-imposed on its members. The head of the big family becomes virtually its patriarch and the family prospers squarely if the patriarch and the other constituents observe the norms soundly and healthily. Disadvantages of Joint Family But it has disadvantages...

...Kemar English Comp II “I can’t tell you what I learned from school but…time isn’t wasted when you’re getting wasted.” Graduating from high school was an exciting time in my life. I was ready to move on to a higher level of education, notorious for its more carefree and energetic environment and lifestyle. The fall semester of my freshman year in college, I attended St. John’s University. Caught up in the freedom and excitement of college, I did more hanging out, partying, and sleeping than I did attending class or studying. I was enjoying myself to the fullest, whether it was meeting new people or partaking in new activities. It was until the end of the semester, that I realized that I was failing or had failed majority of my classes. It hadn’t occurred to me then, how dire the consequences of my actions would be. In fact, this experience greatly altered my outlook on life. Besides the fact that I allowed myself to be a failure, I had disappointed much of my family in the process. I knew that I wanted to be successful and that from then on, no matter what, I had to work hard to achieve my goals. My experience at St. John’s has also taught me that I need to learn how to create a balance in my life. There should be a time to relax and hang out, but also a time to concentrate on school. School at times will be far from easy, but I have learned never to give up and always...
