Paul Carvel, A Belgian writer, once said “Passion is a positive obsession. Obsession is a negative passion.” When the word “obsession” is heard, people initially assume that it’s a bad thing and they generally link addiction to obsession. The reality is that those two are similar but not the same. Additionally, obsession is only bad if that’s how you make it out to be. There can be bad obsessions, as well as good obsessions. In my personal experience, I have had my own fair share of obsessions.

For over five years of my life, I have had an obsession with volleyball. My passion for it has been growing stronger and stronger and I’m constantly looking for opportunities to play, only so that I’m able to further pursue it, even after I complete …show more content…
You see people like Alexis Ren, Sommer Ray, Kim Kardashian, etc. post all about their “perfect” lives and their very risqué photos, but no one ever sees the reality of their lives. No one truly knows what goes on behind the scenes, and people assume that everything they see on the internet is completely real and true. They think that if their lives don’t look like that, then they’re doing something wrong and that they absolutely must achieve what they’re showing to the world. Many people in this world go to great extents and get plastic surgery to alter how they look, just so they’re able to look like the models they see online. They become so immersed in what they see online, that they don’t even care about the health risks that stem from plastic surgery. These obsessions are tremendously unhealthy, especially when it’s currently affecting teens all around the world. On the other hand, when you become obsessed with school, sports, religion, etc., that’s when things are different. When you’re so passionate about getting good grades, working towards getting chosen as the libero for your dream university volleyball team, or constantly spreading God’s word and trying to make an impact on others, these all become healthy obsessions. Constantly thinking about studying and getting your homework and assignments in on time is not …show more content…
Addiction is defined as “The state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, such as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.” When you’re addicted to your phone, drugs, alcohol, etc., you and/or your body grow so used to it, that once it’s taken away from you, you go crazy and cannot function properly. Although addiction and obsession are both very similar, there is one vital characteristic that makes these things very different; control. When it comes to obsessions, you still have control over yourself and you’re controlling the obsession. However, addictions are the complete opposite. Addiction controls you, and you are basically trapped. When you’re a regular drug user, your body depends on the drug you’re consuming, and when you stop using it, your body cannot run without it at all whatsoever. Even though you’re able to control an obsession, it’s very easy for an obsession to control you. A great example of this is Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgeralds’ The Great Gatsby. Gatsby was immensely obsessed with his past and all of his wealth, and it ended up being fatal for him. He once had a relationship with a girl, they stopped talking,

My Passion For Research Paper

...Words are the basis of writing. Writing is a specialty, and a skill. It’s one of my favorites to pursue in. The flow of words, structure, and most importantly, the meaning is what makes writing a pleasure to me. The meaning of words can have so many different ways to impact a reader; to write and experience them is influential to me. Growing up I have always had a passion for writing, no matter the kind. What I love most about writing is the many ways a statement can go. Writing can have so many possibilities and to me that is phenomenal. The words that are written, but not spoken, can hold secrets behind the words themselves. However, sometimes writing can be overwhelming. My least favorite thing about writing is the consumption it can have...

Unit 3 Passion Research Paper

...Three passions, elementary yet overwhelmingly strong, govern my life: a love of video games, the advances of technology, and a quest for the knowledge that will help advance mankind. These passions, like a wave moves a boat, have moved me to live my life the way I have to this point. A love of video games brings a joy to any hollow hours that may arise in my day. It has already expended many hours of my life and none of those hours have been regretted. A love of video games can be the catalyst in bringing a group of people together--people who have nothing in common with one another can sit down and have fun while playing together in a game. I have spent time on this finally because even the people who can not see each other face to...

Chocolate A Healthy Passion Research Paper

...Los Altos High School has tried various tactics to reduce stress in students. One thing they have not tried, however, is to feed the students chocolate. Although critics argue that chocolate is too high in sugar and fat content to actually be healthy in the amounts that we eat it, and any perceived changes in mood or stress level are fleeting, the notion that chocolate has positive effects on physical and mental health might not be too good to be true. Shara Aaron makes the case for the physical and mental health benefits of chocolate in the book Chocolate; A Healthy Passion. To begin with, chocolate has a long history dating back to the Aztecs who used it for its medicinal properties. They served it as a drink to the royalty, in ceremonies, as sacrifices to the gods, and as currency. From central america, chocolate spread to europe and the rest of the world. Since at the time, chocolate was extremely bitter and did not taste very good, it spread because of observed medical benefits. Centuries later in the 1990s,...

Malcolm Gladwell Counter Argument

...I consider discussion 3, causes and correlations, my strongest example of writing for two reasons: counter-arguments and passion for helping. After reading Mr. Malcolm Gladwell’s chapter on “The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes”, I was given the opportunity to challenge Mr. Gladwell’s theory. I feel I excelled at countering his arguments. My responses were sound and strong. I touched on every point Mr. Gladwell made reference to in his chapter, and successfully countered them with examples of my own. I took the advice my teacher gave, and pretended I was in a podium addressing a group of policy makers. This visualization helped realize this is the chance to save lives (without being over dramatic), In other words I showed passion for the...

Line-Item Budgeting and Film Production – Exploring Some Benefits of Constraints on Creativity and Aesthetic Value Creation

...Frederiksberg Copenhagen Business School Denmark *) Corresponding author: ah.om@cbs.dk Early work – Please do not quote without the permission from the authors Paper to be presented at the workshop on Creativity and Control Sponsored by Accounting Organizations and Society 4–5 April 2011, Barcelona, Spain Abstract: This paper explores the role of budgeting in the Danish film industry and seeks to illustrate the positive effects a line-budget might have on the creativity and innovativeness in film production. In our analysis we provide illustrative examples of the enabling and facilitating role of budget constraints on film production from the Danish film industry in general as well as from a case study of the process of making the Danish film “The Island of Lost Souls” in particular. We draw on Elster (2000)’s constraint theory and suggest that the constraints imposed on agents by line-item budgeting under some circumstances lead to situations where ‘less is more’ as line-item budgeting might be used to focus creative behavior as well as pre-commit the agent against passion and time inconsistency. 1 I. Introduction The dysfunctional consequences of constraints imposed by budgets on agents dealing with uncertain, complex or dynamic organizational settings have been discussed in research for decades (Argyris 1952; Burns and Stalker 1961; Bruns and Waterhouse 1975; Merchant 1981; Brownell 1985; Shields and Shields 1998; Frow et al. 2010). Luis had a passion for teaching ever since he was in high school teaching crafts to 10 year old kids. “He decided to go into teaching nine years ago, between his sophomore and junior years in high school”(Integ, pg 64). Luis was raised in the largest city of the state, where he has deep roots with friends and family. For half a year he had felt like a slave as a paralegal in a large law firm, and another half year as a junior executive has only made him realize his desire to become a teacher. Finally after completing his B.A and receiving his teaching credentials, he decided to apply for a part time substitute teaching position until something came up. Soon because of the many retirements and the good impression he had earned with the school where he worked, they offered him a full-time teaching job. However, Sunset National Bank, a place where he applied, is offering him a job over 15 other candidates, “Sunset National Bank has chosen him over 15 other candidates for the trainee position because of his excellent academic...

Personal Statement: Putting Thoughts To Paper

...Putting Thoughts to Paper For several years in school, I dreaded writing academic papers because I found many of the topics monotonous, provoking little desire in me to work hard. The writing process intimidated me because I was often unaware as to where I should begin a paper and once I did, how I should develop my thoughts in an effective manner. My appreciation of writing, both academically and artistically, did not surface until my sophomore year in high school. When I transferred from public to private school, I realized that my writing skills were not as strongly developed as many of my fellow classmates. This feeling of inadequacy motivated me to seek help from my teachers and peers. By the end of first semester sophomore year, my...

I believe many of you would have come across the above quote at one time or the other. Many career coaches often cite this quote at will during career counseling to drive home the view that a person’s career decisions should be based on passion and not pay. Like what he said, I believed that if we were passionate enough about doing what we love, the money would come rolling in. Thesis: Choosing a job based on your passion is important because true passion is more valuable than money and no obstacle will stop you from achieving success. Preview/Transition: For example, I believe Main Point/Example #1: Which is better, love or money? Love is the key to happiness. People say having money is what life is about. I don’t believe that. The true happiness is going after what you love. However, I grew up and became more mature. Now I believe that true passion is more valuable than money. It doesn’t matter what kind of job I will have soon and how much my...

Importance of Research

...Importance of Research When writing college papers, grants or just presentations for work research is the most important process of the writing process. This paper will discuss the three segments of the TEDTalks: Award –Winning Teenage Science in Action video. The three segments discuss carcinogens, chemotherapy and asthma. Segment 1 Lauren Hodge conducted a research study on carcinogens in grilled chicken. The hypothesis developed by Lauren was “could possibly the carcinogens be decreased due to a marinade and could it be due to the differences in pH?” ( ). This topic was important to Lauren, because while in the doctor’s office she read an article that discussed a lawsuit pertaining to California’s Proposition 65. The magazine article discussed the hidden danger of carcinogens in the food we eat. Lauren was surprised to find that more people had no idea about the dangers of carcinogens in our food. Lauren collected data for analyzation in three different stages. In the first stage Lauren marinated all of the chicken at home in five different marinades. The second stage was completed at Penn State University and she extracted the chemicals, changed the pH, and ran it through the lab equipment which in turn separated the compounds. In the third and final stage Lauren ran the samples through a high pressure liquid chromatography mass spectrometer, which separated the compounds and analyzed the chemicals, and told her exactly how much carcinogens she had in the chicken. Lauren’s...
