Nephrology offers many challenges involving the complexities of both acid/base and fluid/ electrolyte disorders requiring a comprehensive knowledge for diagnosis and management. As a future nephrologist I will be able to blend pathophysiology with direct patient care as well as providing primary are to those in need of immediate acute care. This is a facet of nephrology I admire most.

I was born with a kidney complication that left me in excruciating pain. The pain left me in tears for hours throughout the day and often led to sleepless nights. At the age of 11, my father took me to see a doctor once the pain had become unbearable. Within a few short hours of tests and scans, physician was able to diagnose the problem and explain the procedure that would alleviate my pain. I had to undergo surgery for my renal defect. After the surgery, I awoke in my hospital bed with virtually no pain. When the doctor entered my room for his post-operative inspection, he informed me that I should no longer feel the unbearable pain once I have recovered. I am grateful to be able to say that as of today, he stands 100% correct. This physician left an everlasting impression on me. My experience left me with a desire to help others and also provided motivation over the

...Student Academic Resource Center We teach the tools that are indispensable to learning Study Skills for Nursing Students These suggestions for study skills for nursing students came from nursing faculty and students. Use what you can and if you would like one-to-one guidance to refine your learning skills for nursing courses, call the Student Academic Resource Center at 8235130 and make an appointment with the learning skills counselor. From Sue Wickham, Academic Achievement Center Instructor at Des Moines Area Community College: “Although I haven't designed study skills workshops specifically for nursing students, I have worked extensively on an individual basis with students in our nursing program. What's helped me most in giving study skills advice has been reviewing tests with students to identify the sources of their errors. Based on those interactions, here are a few topics you should emphasize: 1. 2. Time management is a HUGE issue for nursing students. Many of them are parents (often single parents) holding down jobs with odd hours (they're likely to be CNAs). Study groups are an absolute necessity in this program. Students need to rehearse the material actively, honing their teamwork skills, and combine a little social life with academics. The standard suggestions for taking multiple choice tests (e.g. watch out for absolutes) don't go very far. Students need to be made aware of the importance of applying concepts to particular cases, not just memorizing definitions...

Differencies in Competency Between Adn and Bsn Nurses

...environment, case management, supervision of unlicensed other support personnel, and educating patients on treatment. The focus will be on the differences in competency between ADN and BSN nurses in this paper. Associate Degree Nurse The associate degree level of nursing was developed out of a need to produce nurses in response to a shortage during and following World War II. It was proposed that graduates from associate degree nursing programs would work a“technical” nurses, assisting and working under the supervision of professional nurses. The associate degree level of nursing education became popular and has come to be viewed as an attractive career path for those who desire a shortened, less expensive route to becoming a registered nurse 1. Nursing Program Associate degree programs, located in community colleges, require a minimum to two year of full-time study with a reasonable balance in liberal arts and natural, social, and behavioral sciences and the other half in nursing courses. 2. Education The Associate Degree focuses more on technical skills than theory and provide opportunities to demonstrate competence in the application of nursing knowledge and clinical...

...time. Students frequently are overwhelmed with the amount and complexity of the material that is covered during each class meeting. Consequently, they may resort to memorizing facts instead of comprehending, applying, and transferring knowledge to practice. In addition, students rely on teachers to provide lecture notes and may not be adequately prepared to participate in class discussions. Case studies, which are an effective way of connecting critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making to practice (Baumberger-Henry, 2003; Campbell, 2004), enhance students’ participation in class discussions. Conceptual models of nursing provide a unique body of knowledge that can be used to guide construction of case studies and enhance application of didactic course content to nursing practice. Students tend to undervalue the contributions of a nursing conceptual model to guide practice. By integrating a nursing conceptual model into the organization of course content and construction of case studies, students are exposed to how conceptual models can guide nursing practice. The purpose of this column is to explore the use of case studies for a senior level medical-surgical nursing course constructed within the context of the Roy adaptation model. Roy Adaptation Model The Roy adaptation model is a conceptual model of nursing that provides a solid foundation for nursing practice (Roy & Andrews, 1999). The philosophical and scientific assumptions of Roy’s model assert that the person...

Multiple Myeloma

...“multiple” refers to more than one area of the bone marrow being affected (Mangan, 2006, p. 64hn1). Because the disease is incurable, and because only 30 percent of patients survive longer than five years after diagnosis, living with multiple myeloma can be difficult for patients and their families (Mangan, 2006, p. 64hn1). As health care providers on the front lines of patient care, nurses must be aware of the multi-system manifestations of multiple myeloma, be able to make the assessments needed to identify and prevent complications related to the disease and its treatment regimen, and be ready to provide patients and their families with knowledge and support. In this paper, the author will first provide a full description of multiple myeloma, including etiology and risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and treatment. This accomplished, the author will apply the stages of the nursing process to nursing care...
