Peace Like A River Analysis

In the book, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, Enger mentions many things over and over throughout his story. Light and energy are mentioned repeatedly on occasion representing the power of God almighty. Jeremiah, the father in the story, has a close connection with God and can be even argued as a prophet. He has many traits that parallel him to Jesus. During the start of the book Jeremiah the walks into a locker room. The locker room is pitch black, he hears two boys start to bully a girl. It reads,” Dad's face coming toward them was luminous of itself.” It was impossible for Jeremiah's face to light up because there was no other light found in the locker room. With the light illuminating from Jeremiah's face it scared …show more content…
Although they not appear twice they do reappear and in an interesting way too. In both cases God was very much present. When Reuben was at church and Reverend John he was knocking people to the ground. A light fixture wobbled above Ruben's head who was in the basement. We later find out that light fixtures had a large impact on the way Jeremiah lived at the rest of his days. In the tornado the light fixture was not connected to any power source. When the tornado appeared the light mysteriously came back on Enger writes, “gloriously charged by some storm bent physics.” This storm bent physics was the power of God. Jeremiah should have been afraid of the tornado but instead knew he was safe because he knew that God was with …show more content…
Contradicting that is when there is darkness during a certain time. For example when Davy shots Finch and Baska, or when they are picking on the girl in the locker room before Jeremiah shows up. Darkness is usually associated with the Devil or Satan and light is recognizable with God. When I think of, or picture Jeremiah I always picture him in a lit up room or outside in the day. When I picture his foil, Davy, I see him in the darkness and not always literal darkness but I see him in a dark or troubling time in his life. Always running from someone or something. In conclusion I believe that the power of light and energy, something that only occurs on a couple of appearances, is or can be the power of God or the a Holy Spirit. Also whenever there is darkness it is the opposite, and not every time but on most. If the setting is dark then something bad is going to happen. As Jesus once said in John chapter eight verse twelve, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” This is a true example of how the light and energy from this book is a motif to the power and grace of

Peace Like A River Character Analysis

...Throughout my reading of "Peace Like A River," I found the Land family to portray an honest interpretation on the day-to-day struggles with reality. Each member is immersed with realistic issues, but nevertheless their faith plays a key role in their spiritual growth as individuals. Leif Enger, makes some of the most miraculous occurrences seem so authentic within the story. Reuben's sincere portrayal of events, ensure me as the reader that things will be ok. I believe Enger's use of characters such as Jeremiah and Reuben, is to convey similar aspects of faith seen in the Bible by Jesus Christ and his disciples. Reuben Land, the main character of the story, has a severe case of asthma. Although he struggles a great deal throughout the book Reuben learns to cope well with his ailment through faith in his spirituality (Which appears to be Christian, though it is not identified in the book). Shortly after his birth Reuben was unable to breath for 12 minutes. Consequently, leading Dr. Nokes( who you could say was Reuben's Pediatrician) is...

Peace Like A River Character Analysis

...Dramatic Change Peace Like a River By Leif Erikson Tessa Johnson Period 5 In the book Peace Like a River horses are a symbol of a dramatic change about to happen. Change happens with the land family multiple times throughout the book and every time that happens a horse comes into the picture either before or after. Mostly, the horses seem to come before a negative change that will determine what the rest of the story will be like. One thing that Rueben dreams about is horses and his dreams usually tell what is going to happen later in the book. One of the dreams that Rueben has is when he dreams about seeing a dead horse in the river and with fog all around. This is just before Davy shoots Finch and Basca. In this case the horse isn't alive...

The Big Two Hearted River

...two-hearted river is a sample of how soldiers have to repair and find inner peace by themself. Character: Nick is a very strong minded man, he keeps on going until he has achieved his goal. He must be a physically strong man, because of the strength needed to carry the load of his backpack. He is in a situation, where he for some reason need to punish himself and push his body to the limit. We can see this in his own quotation: “ “I´ve got a right to eat this kind of stuff, if I´m willing to carry it” Nick said” The narrater finishes it by saing: “ He did not speak again.” (Page 5, line 1 and 2) He shows his mental strength and weakness here. His strength because he is able to carry his own food all day and wait until he arives to eat it, eventhough it might be tempting. He is weak because he doesn´t just eat something from the forest or river. The setting: The area where Nick is hicking have a lot of symbolic places wich references to the battlefield in the 1st. World war. It might look like he is out on a fishing trip, but really he´s out to repair his mind after the war, because it seems like he keeps seeing places from the war, like: “The foundations of the Mansion House hotel stuck up above the ground. The stone was chipped and split by the fire” (Page 1 line , “You would have to keep almost level with the ground to move al all”(page 13 line 7-8) and “ In the swamp fishing was a tragic adventure.”(page 13 line 14) The battleground looked very much like the...

Ara Pacis

...trained by a Greek sculptor. This is due to the intricate detail and how well the Greeks were known for sculpting. The piece of artwork I am focusing on is the Tellus Panel which is located on the southeast side of the Ara Pacis. The size of the artwork is 9.68 ft. wide and 6.79 ft. tall. The medium is pure white Luna marble; the primary layer of the artwork is not covered in brick like many other structures in this time period. The iconography of the artwork is “peace” which is created through the various elements of nature. This is shown in the in each of the three figures depicted. In the center of the sculpture there is a predominant motherly figure which is believed to be Tellus, the Roman Goddess which represents “Earth.” On the figure’s lap there are two infants which portray the character in an extremely devoted and caring light. Many scholars believe that these two infants signify the future of Rome, and could possibly be the founders of the city, Romulus and Remus. The motherly character is gently looking down at the two infants in a tremendously tender manner. This subtle gesture represents peace across the entire Roman Empire. On each of the sides of the Goddess Tellus there are two half naked nymphs. You can tell that these characters are nymphs because of their garment which is smoothly soaring over their heads. One of the nymphs is gently sitting on a swan which is in flight. This depiction of the nymph is a symbol for “Air.” On the other side of Tellus resides a nymph...

Rhetorical Analysis We ascend upon a man in the early 80s, who has the mind of a genius or could possibly be considered insane. The article that is being writen by this man will later be published in an issue of Playboy in 1981. It is over the acceptance of horror movies in the society of that time period and its future. He will later become if not already one of the greatest, if not the greatest, horror writers of our time. Now this article is placed in a magazine that is not to widely accepted or easy to attain at the time. Its reader base is mostly men in their 20s to 80s and only available in certain shops. The article is very graphic in the sense that it talks about the sanity of man, such as “We’ve all known people who talk to themselves, people who sometimes squinch their faces into horrible grimaces when they believe no one is watching,….”(Stephen King, 1981). It was written towards an audience that would not take offense to what was on the edge of controversial. He justifies the need for horror films in a way that makes society feel like it is need to quince our thirst for violence and gore. He says “The fun comes from seeing others menaced—sometimes killed.”(Stephen King, 1981). Not only does he describe are need for it, but says it helps us keep are insanity at bay, keeping us out of the looney house and possible serial killers satisfied. As stated towards his conclusion...

Rhetorical Analysis Of I Have A Dream Speech

...This speech echoes King’s conduct. The sibilance of ‘safe and secure’, coupled with recurring references to ‘family’ and ‘peace’, support the speaker’s attempt to break down cultural barriers by appealing to the universal human desire to feel protected and be accepted by society. The speaker similarly offers clear instructions regarding how to assist, through increasing sanctions, media coverage and humanitarian aid. Further research conducted on Auguste Comte, a French philosopher, revealed the power of altruism to unite individuals (Heilbron, 1990). The speech references this by appealing to humanity’s altruistic traits, concluding with a powerful metaphor relating the universality of humanity to a weapon that has the power to unite opposing...

Analysing the Israel-Palestine Conflict in International Relations Perspective

...Analysing the Israel-Palestine Conflict in International Relations Perspective Introduction to International Relations Analysing the Israel-Palestine Conflict in International Relations Perspective Background Since the early 20th Century, Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting over the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. With the assumption that Palestine is a state to facilitate discussion, this report sketches out the most significant elements of the conflict on the three levels defined by Kenneth Waltz, and applies the Realist theory of international relations (IR) to the “Two-State” solution. Levels of analysis 1. First Level The first level focuses on individuals involved in the international relations. On Israel’s side, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has an important role to play because he has the final word in all political decisions. On the side of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas enjoys an even stronger position. Not only is he the chairman of Fatah and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), he is also the President of the Palestinian National Authority (PA), which is the ruling body for the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. He does not to have to face elections as he runs an authoritarian regime. On the regional level, the most influential figure is Mohamed Morsi, President of Egypt, who is vital to negotiating efforts for the conflict. Egypt is the first Arab country to accept Israel as...

Under the Executive Order No. 192, series of 1987, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was mandated as the primary government agency possible for the sustainable management and development of the country’s natural resources. Together with Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), they carry out regulatory and law-enforced functions with provisions on environmental management, particularly on water quality monitoring, conservation of natural resources, and community-based natural resource management. 2 / 18 One of the most looked after body of water both by the DENR and LLDA here in the Philippines is none other than the infamous Pasig River. The river, which stretches for 25 kilometers from Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay, serves as a major transport route, source of water, and lifeline of Laguna de Bay (one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world) as such it is a vital ecosystem and an irreplaceable natural resource. However, due to negligence and industrial development, the river has become much polluted and is considered dead (unable to sustain life) by ecologists. Due to this growing problem, the Sagip Pasig Movement was created to take care and literally save the river from peril. Sagip...

Deciphering Achebe’s Essay Regarding Heart of Darkness

...Deciphering Achebe’s essay The first time I read Chinua Achebe’s “An Image of Africa” I became infuriated with what he had to say about one of my favorite texts. This happened because by way of his approach by simply stating that Western Culture is wired to see certain aspects differently than that of African or Eastern culture. After reading Achebe’s academic essay for the first time my immediate reaction, in his own words, is that “western psychoanalysts must regard the kind of racism displayed by Conrad as absolutely normal” (Achebe 11). I did not want that to be my initial reaction, but why should I argue my side of it if Achebe only believes that I see things this way because of where I was born? According to Chinua Achebe, before I even picked up “An Image Of Africa,” we were never going to see eye to eye on any level of his dissection of the novella Heart of Darkness. My first thought was to not even touch what Achebe had spoke about. To leave it as it was, an unchangeable belief that I would never be able to argue because of his demeanor. A demeanor that shouts, “I’ve felt this way for some time now, and I am finally getting this off my chest.” Someone writing with such conviction is quite hard to argue against. Anyone with a history in debate would know this. I felt as if my conviction was not as high as his over this topic matter, and the only way to argue with someone such as himself is to match his demeanor. Although I felt he was dead wrong with every topic he...

Criticism of Siddhartha and Ceremony

...example, he leaves the Brahmins, the Samanas and Gotama Buddha in pursuit of more knowledge to fulfill his desire of gaining enlightenment. Similarly, Vasudeva is also another Archetypal character in the story. He serves as a counselor towards Siddhartha and is a role model to him. For example, in the chapter “the ferryman” Siddhartha surrenders to Vasudeva his entire self, even his clothes, in order to follow his example in leading a life of calm fulfillment and wisdom. Along with archetypal characters, archetypal symbols are also present in the book. The River is definitely the most influential archetypal symbol in the book. It represents the flowing of time and transitional phases of the life cycle. For example, whenever a great transition occurred in the book like when Siddhartha left Gotama Buddha and also when he abandoned his wealth he came to the river. When Siddhartha observed the river he learned that the river exists only in the present, it is everywhere at once, upstream, downstream, at the sea, and at the source. Life is the same way. Siddhartha realizes that his existence as a boy and his existence as an old man are not separate. Everything has its existence in the present. Therefore after combining the symbols and characters an archetypal situation arises in the book. This situation is the quest of Siddhartha to achieve enlightenment. Furthermore, “Om”...
