Executive Summary Peachtree Securities, Inc. is a 20-year-old regional brokerage house located in Atlanta, GA. Jack Taylor, the firm’s founder and president, has found prosperity by providing quality personal brokerage services to small investors. A recent trend of the firm’s customers is a shift from individual stocks and bonds to mutual funds. Although the number of customers is increasing, the transactions per customer is decreasing, causing sales figures to lag. With the belief that this trend will continue, Taylor has expanded the services his firm offers to include trust and portfolio management. The main customers of trusts for the firm are retirees. They are interested in bonds and high-yield stocks that produce high current income instead of capital gains. The stocks of choice for the firm are in electric utilities. With the cost of research increasing, Taylor decided to hire a security analyst. He hired Laura Donahue in January 1993. Her first task was to conduct a seminar for a group of Peachtree customers on stock investments; she was to include how various securities effect portfolio management. Donahue began by asking herself a few questions that she thought would help the customers understand the stock valuation process and their effects on portfolios1.

...Case 3 Question 1 The T-bond return does not depend on the state of the economy because the interest payments will be made and the bond will be redeemed by the federal government, barring global disaster. The T-bond, since its return is independent of the state of the economy, is risk-free, but only in the nominal sense. An investor is “guaranteed” an 8.0 percent nominal return. However, the real realized return will depend on inflation over the next year. Thus, the real return, which counts most, is uncertain. Also, if interest rates rise, the bond’s price will decline (slightly, for a l-year bond, and if you must sell it to raise cash, you would suffer a slight loss (a large loss on a long-term bond). Question 2 Expected kTECO = 0.1 (-8.0%) + 0.2(.0$) + 0.4(14.0%) + 0.(25.0%) + 0.1(33.0%) = 13.5%. Expected kT-bond = 8.0%. Expected kGH = 8.8%. Expected kT-S$P 500 = 15.0%. Looking solely at expected rates of return, the S$P 500 looks best with a return of 15.0% while the T-bonds, at 8.0 percent, look the worst. Question 3 VarianceTECO = [pic]P1 (ki - k)2 = 0.1(-8 - 13.5) 2 + 0.2(2 - 13.5) 2 + 0.4(14 - 13.5) 2 + 0.2(25 - 13.5) 2 + 0.1(33 - 13.5) 2 = 137.3. [pic] = [pic]=[pic] = 11.7% CV = [pic]/Expected value = 11.7%/13.5% = 0.87. [pic]T-BOND = 0.0%. CV T-BOND = 0.00. [pic]GH = 9.1% CV GH = 1.03. [pic]S&P 50 = 16.4%. CV S&P 50 = 1.10. ...2 Risk and Return Peachtree Securities, Inc. (A) Peachtree Securities is a regional brokerage house based in Atlanta. Although the firm is only 20 years old, it has prospered by following a simple goal – providing quality personal brokerage services to small investors. Jake Taylor, the firm’s founder and president, is well-satisfied with Peachtree’s progress. However, he is apprehensive about the future, as more and more of the firm’s customers are buying mutual funds rather than individual stocks and bonds. Thus, even though the number of customers per office has been increasing because of population growth, the number of transactions per customer has been decreasing, and hence sales growth has slackened. Taylor believes this trend will continue, so he has been actively expanding his product line in an effort to increase sales volume. As a first step, Peachtree began offering trust and portfolio management services five years ago. Many of the trust clients are retirees who are interested primarily in current income rather than capital gains. Thus, an average portfolio consists mostly of bonds and high yield stocks. The stock component is heavily weighted with electric utilities, an industry that has traditionally paid high dividends. For example, the average electric company’s dividend yield was about 6.3 percent in 1992, versus an average stock’s yield of 3.1 percent. Until 1993, Peachtree had no in- house security analysts –all stock and bond selections were based on research...

Evaluation of Pc-Based Accounting Systems

...Introduction Accounting information system is generally a computer-based method for tracking accounting activity in conjunction with information technology resources. It is an organized set of manual and computerized methods, procedures, and controls established to gather, record, classify, analyze, summarize, interpret, and present accurate and timely financial data for management decisions. Originally, the accounting information systems were mostly developed in-house but such solutions were difficult to develop and costly to maintain. Today, they are more commonly sold as prebuilt software packages through vendors such as Microsoft, Sage Group, SAP and Oracle. Microsoft Dynamics GP by Microsoft and Peachtree Complete Accounting by Sage Group are two examples of commonly used accounting systems. Microsoft Dynamics GP Microsoft Dynamics GP was originally developed by North Dakota-based Great Plains software and was acquired by Microsoft in 2002. MS DGP offers a solid solution with 54 modules, a good user-friendly design, excellent customization capabilities, solid end-user support, and a good offering of third-party add-on applications. It is the most well known mid market accounting solution. The price ranges from $1,995 per user to $3,995 per user, depending on whether you purchase the 10 module or advanced module editions. It has applications for financial management, human resources management, manufacturing planning, supply chain management, field service, business intelligence...

...would recommend that system over the other. The benefits of utilizing a database are substantial. In today’s revolutionary business world, it is hard to imagine a company not desiring to invest in a Software that can manage information, and offer a level of security with password protection for wondering eyes (Thomas, 2013). The advantages of a business to use Peachtree Software are rapid access to information, trouble-free reporting, good organization, and many other features. Peachtree Software is written in Microsoft Access, without problems that can rapidly track employee’s attendance, evaluations, payroll, customers’ data, training, and applicants’ data, as well as making sure the company is well informed about any changes in government regulation (HR data manager, 2013). Another database system would be Oracle PeopleSoft that offers compensation, recruiting solutions, payroll interface, time and labor record keeping, travel and expense, and general ledger/budgeting report, which is beneficial to any organization (Oracle. para 4, 2006). However, there are some disadvantages in having these systems such, as a non- manager may engage in identity theft and retrieve an employee’s restricted data, or breach of security with the system could lead to legal matters. The cost per users could range from $40-$100, and then installing the system could start at around $50,000 and up. Another disadvantage is that managers could become solely dependent on...

After presenting her seminar on risk and return, any customers where clamoring for a second lecture. Therefore, Jake Taylor, Peachtree’s president, gave Donahue her second task: determine the value of TECO Energy’s securities (common stock, preferred stock, and bonds) and prepare a seminar to explain the valuation process to the firm’s customers. Fisher, MPA Management Information Systems Texas Southern University Fall 2015 September 30, 2015 Discussion of Company In 1963, Gary Comer, an advertising copywriter with Young & Rubicam, decided to pursue his dream of opening his own business. With $30,000 of initial funding, Comer and his partners Robert Halperin, Richard Stearns and 2 of Stearns employees set out to open Lands’ End. The first store was located in Chicago IL. and initially offered sailing equipment. Comer was an avid sailor along with Richard Stearns who was also a sailor. In the spring of 1977, Lands End produced its first catalog containing apparel and other goods. That same year, sales reached $3.6 million. In 1978, the company introduced its first button-down Oxford shirt upon which the Lands’ End legacy would be built. Also in 1978, operations were moved from Chicago to Dodgeville, WI. Another significant shift in operations at the time was the introduction of fulfilling customers’ orders by telephone.
