Lesson Plan (Volleyball)
Section 1: Lesson Information
Grade Level: 3
Age: 8
Estimated level of development stage for this age/grade: Semi predictable with external paced
Number of students: 24
Fundamental skill to be taught: correctly serving, holding, over head throw, and hitting the ball from all positions.
State standard: Applies skills: Volleys a ball using a 2 hand overhead pattern sending it upward to a target, (S1.E 23.5), (Hastie, P. 2012).
Section 2: Lesson Introduction
Description of the lesson:
Today we are going to be focusing on the correct way in handling a volley ball and can be fun once the skills are known. They consist of bumping, serving, spiking, setting, and blocking, and digging. We will learn how to form our hands, how to pass to your opponents.
Task #1 The rules and techniques of volley ball are: 1. Bumping-make a fist with one hand and wrap your other hand around the fist, do not cross your thumbs or interlock your fingers. 2. Serving-there is an overhand and underhand, underhand is easiest, hold the ball out in front of you. With your other hand you swing back and bring it back forward and hit the ball, get low when u serve and raise as the ball exits your grip. 3. Spiking-there is a simple rule. on a serve you cannot spike it over...if someone bumps and sets it to you THEN you can spike...there is an approach...take two giants steps two small steps then feet together and jump hitting the ball on an angle. 4. Setting-you almost make claws with your hands and you make sure the ball is above your head and you press it out with your fingertips. 5. Blocking-when someone tries to spike jump with your hands somewhat spread like moose ears and arms extended above your head.
Task #2
I need for each person to take a ball and start serving to their partner using the technique of rules, first underhand which is the easiest. Practice the underhand until you are comfortable with serving the ball like that.
Task #3
Now I need for you to learn how to bump the ball by making a fist with one hand and wrapping your hand around the fist. Bumping will be used when someone tries to spike the ball. After learning how to bump properly there will be drills in serving in groups of four using the underhand that is the easiest to do. Next blocking is needed to keep the other team from scoring; now setting the ball correctly by making a claw to hold the ball. To block effectively, blockers should very close to the net but not touch it. When they leave the ground, their arms should be straight up with hands wide, giving more surface area to deflect the ball, (Best Volley Ball Drills, May 9, 2015).
Task #4
I need for the first 12 people to get in a group of four and set up the nets, each group is set up by their height for the height of the net for serving to each other. Each partner will serve to the other using the underhand serve; hold the ball out in front of you. With your other hand you swing back and bring it back forward and hit the ball, get low when u serve and raise as the ball exits your grip. When each group has master the skill of serving you then will practice blocking by extending your hands over your head like moose ears and extend your hands above your head.
Task #5
Now the next four groups of four will set up their nets for spiking the ball to their partners by taking two giants steps two small steps then feet together and jump hitting the ball on an angle. This technique will help you to be able to jump with height as you practice and your partner will be able to do the same as you with taking turns.
Student learning objective: As a result of this lesson, student will…… * Be able to take the correct hand position when serving. * Be able to move in all directions to intercept a ball from the other side. * Be able to jump the height to meet the ball to volley to spike. * Be able to bend in position to jump to block the volley ball. * Successfully move from side to side in any direction
System for classroom management and student grouping: (class rules, consequences, rewards, and organization of the class during the activity). * Class rules: Playing as team, no shoving or pushing, being respectful of others. * If rules are broken, consequences will be running extra laps, extra pushups, or sit-ups. * Rewards: choosing a squad leader, equipment manager. * Organization: Each group is responsible for gathering all equipment up, and putting out equipment.
Equipment needed and the environment: (classroom, gym, outdoors).
Environment will be in the gym until game is skilled; then move outdoors when weather is permitted. * Volley ball net * Volley ball per pair * Low nets * Towels * Water/cups
Lesson Procedure: Good morning, boys and girls! How was your Memorial Day Weekend? Usually on a holiday like this there are cookouts going and a lot of games being played. What kind of games did any of you play at the family gatherings? Kala,”We played basketball”, John, “We played kickball”. Wow! Those are very good games to be played at a family cookout on the holiday. Well today we are going to learn how the volleyball and learn the fundamental skills of volleyball. How many of you know how to play volleyball? Wow! Twelve out of twenty-four students, that is great. Let me give you a little history about how volleyball game about. As you all know that volley ball can be played in a gym but mostly it is played outside in the sand at the beach. In 1895 James Naismith who invented basketball in Springfield at the YMCA, in which people caught on to the game very fast but the game had a drawback. Most people could not keep up with the fast pasted of the ball. So Morgan conceived a court game he originally called mignonette, because it was related to badminton. Anyway the court was divided by a 6ft. x 6in net, with two teams that hit the ball back and forth across the net until one team missed. The first competitive game was played July 7, 1896 and that is why we have the game volleyball now, (History of volleyball, 2012). You may read a little further on the history with the website below. First, we will learn the rules and techniques of volleyball as explained in Task #1. Then in Task #2 it tells how each person is to serve the ball, then Task #3 tells how bumping and blocking is done. Followed by Tasks #4 , 5, which we will begin to set up in groups of four’s according to your height. This of course will allow you to set up your nets for the proper height. This lesson plan is to teach everyone the fundamental skills of playing volleyball but most of all is to have fun doing it. Remember we all have to be safe while playing the game, and the rules of being GREAT and what it stands for: G-grasp, R-responsible, E-excel, A-attitude, and T-trustworthy. We never laugh at someone because they are having a hard time getting the routine; instead we give them a helping hand. Why? Because we are like soldiers and we never leave a fellow soldier behind. I will be looking for hand position of the ball when serving, are you able to jump the height to meet the ball, how fast you are able to move when the ball is served from the other side, if your are bending in position to be able to jump and block, and how well you can move from side to side. Then I will look for the overhand and underhand serving position, and how you spread out your hands like moose ears and with your arms extended above your head for blocking when the other team tries to spike you.
Home-School Connection:
Attention!!!!! Parents…..
I need for each parent to help their child over the weekend in practicing serving the ball in VOLLYEBALL…we have been learning the skills and technique of the game. Come Monday I will be grading each child on serving the ball from what we have been practicing in PE. I want to give everyone a chance to earn an extra 15 points towards their grade. They will need to practice overhand and underhand…See example below of the techniques…. UNDERHAND……. OVERHAND
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Spiking—with a partner, each
Player tosses high tosses to themselves and moves to the ball. Facing the net, spike the ball over the net. The partner catches the ball and then repeats the activity. Fitness…. Please make sure you do your warm-ups……
I will like for you to look up this website with your child to go over basic skills in volleyball. www.bestvolleyballdrills.com › Volleyball Skills
Thank you…and remember to have fun and enjoy!!!!
Lesson Accommodations:
The game is for everyone no matter who they are; therefore if there are any disable students in our PE class they will also be able to play volleyball. For Example: If I have a student in a wheelchair I will accommodate them by allowing them to be the server for that team. I will explain to the other students that I have noticed that Charlie is a good server of the ball, although he is in a wheelchair he still have the skills that are needed to help a team to win the game. I will announce that we will be having several children joining our class temporarily for this volleyball lesson. I will need for my students to accommodate the other children by helping them with the techniques that they have been taught. If it rains and the gym is in use by another group or program, we will then have to move to a classroom with just enough space for set up. I will have to break the groups in half, with the first 12 players 6-6 playing for 15 minutes then the other group of 12 players 6-6 playing for 15 minutes. Leaving the last 15 minutes for feed back with the students, allowing them to tell me what they liked and disliked about the techniques of the game. I want my students to have a say in how they are doing by giving me feedback and make them feel important. This way I get them to love the game and I get to see what they learned about the game.

...Lesson Plan Cindy Dean PED212 Foundation of Movement Motor Activities Instructor: James Woodward January 13, 2014 Lesson Plan For this assignment paper I have chosen elementary school students which are in the third grade. The group of students range from seven to nine year old. Evolving achievements for several third grade students it is likely that they go through physical development at this age group include stable development example. At this age their gross motor skills are more developed than their fine motor skills. Elementary students learn through movement. Physical education is an important part during these developmental years. Children are able to run and jump as well as having control of large muscles in their legs. The body and mind rarely work together. They have a difficult time holding small things, catching or putting something together using their fingers. The total number of students in this lesson plan classroom is thirty. The school is Mary L. Fonseca Elementary. There will be some fundamental skills that we will try to teach the elementary students; for example jumping and landing. Locomotors skills we will teach them skipping, running, sliding, galloping, leaping, hopping, and non- locomotors skills students we will teach twisting. The student objective goals would be that the end of the course students will successfully jump and land on balance in different ways. The students successfully improve their distance as well as height....
