I am a father, brother, and uncle, and I felt I thought I knew what pedophilia was. I have learned what I thought was wrong. Pedophiles have been mislabeled and misunderstood for years. I want to educate the public on what pedophilia is so that we can change the stigma associated with pedophilia. Statistics on pedophiles are dubious because cases typically come to light as part of a criminal investigation or during psychological treatment. “Experts estimate that only one in 20 cases of child sexual abuse is reported, so it remains unclear how prevalent pedophilia is in the general population.” (Pessimism about pedophilia, 2010) Men suffering from this mental disorder are afraid to openly seek help because of fear of losing their job and possible bodily harm from the public. If we think of pedophilia as a disorder and change the negative stigma associated with it, this may encourage those suffering from it to get treatment.
