In the passage, “The pupil¨, by Henry James, he establishes three characters: Pemberton, Mrs. Moreen and Morgan Moreen. The speaker depicts the three characters and their interaction among them through his point of view.
Pemberton a character who is portrayed at the beginning of the passage as a “poor young man” is then perceived by the speaker as a person that focuses on how much he will get paid by Mrs. Moreen. However, the author’s choice of words to describe Pemberton, indicate his interaction among Mrs. Moreen and Morgan Moreen “modest” and “timid”. Pemberton is depicted by the author with lack of confidence. His lack of confidence is made evident when the speaker states “he looked intelligent”, meaning that through Pemberton’s observations, …show more content…
A child that is defended by his mother’s comments that are “ extravagantly to his advantage” because she represents him by speaking all but good things of her son because he is sick but through Pemberton’s eyes, he has no manners. Morgan is represented as a rude little boy because he disrespects his mother by “ he came back without the fan, only with the casual observation that he couldn’t find it”, this indicate that he ignored his mother. Morgan’s relationship among Pemberton’s is evident when, he looks down at Pemberton “ he looked straight and hard at the candidate for the honour of taking his education in hand”, this represents their relationship by Pemberton believing that he is a brat and Morgan Moreen feeling higher than the tutor. Eventually, Morgan’s attitude leads Pemberton to decide that “the first thing he should have to teach his little charge would be appear to address himself to his mother”.
