The Pen or the Sword? “The Pen is mightier than the Sword.” is an expression that is often heard today. It expresses that you can solve problems better and more effectively through communication with words than by violence. Words get a lot more done in a professional aspect. And Laertes, Ophelia’s brother, happens to agree judging by what he tells her. Through explication it comes to light that Laertes knows just how powerful words can truly be. Laertes and Ophelia met to discuss her current romantic situation with Hamlet. He tries to warn her that Hamlet might not be the man for her. It is just after his warning that he utters a line, “He may not, as unvalued people do, carve for himself, for on his choice depends the safety and health of this whole state…” (Shakespeare: Lines 19-21, Act 1: Scene 3). Laertes has alluded to powers of a true king with one line, but more specifically with the triple entendre of “carve”. “He may not, as unvalued people do…” already shows Laertes’ thoughts about Hamlet. He is royalty, and thus is considered a valuable person. “…Carve for himself…” has multiple meanings. Carve, as a verb, can mean to cleave or hollow out. To carve another person, though brutal, is a mean of killing them. Something which a king can do with an utterance. “Carve for himself” also alludes to Hamlet’s royalty. Carve’s other meaning is to cut or slice. When kings’ eat, it is ordered that someone carves their meat for them. Once again, the power of words is shown. Further analysis of this line will lead to the question of if the Pen is truly mightier than the Sword. Shakespeare succeeds in contradicting himself in his writing of Hamlet. Shakespeare creates the character of Hamlet with a problem to commitment. The whole play is based off of action, and knowing when to talk and when to attack which is something Hamlet cannot do. At the same time, Shakespeare is also promoting the power of words with examples like Laertes’ quote and the order to the King of England for Hamlet’s death in later acts. Shakespeare also is a master of wording. Laertes’ quote about Hamlet contained a triple entendre with the word “Carve”. He went from one end of the spectrum with the death aspect to another with as simple a task as eating. Shakespeare flowered up the words “royalty” and “king” with terms like “unvalued people” and for king “For on his choice depends the safety and health of this whole state.”
In conclusion we can safely assume that words play the more powerful role. With words you can effortlessly kill and even reduce the amount of work it takes to eat food. You hold the fate of an entire state by just a title. Words create lovely sentences and are a great example of a healthy mind. Sure Hamlet spoke more than he acted, it was just unknown to him how much power are behind his every word.

Literacy Narrative

...The pen is mightier than the sword In an instant, your existence can be altered. It only takes an instant when you might discovery yourself traveling down a dissimilar route than you started on. You may never identify it, but the meekest form of literacy could make the world of difference in one’s life. Between the ages of four and nine, your child will have to master some 100 phonics rules, learn to recognize 3,000 words with just a glance, and develop a comfortable reading speed approaching 100 words a minute. He must learn to combine words on the page with a half-dozen squiggles called punctuation into something – a voice or image in his mind that gives back meaning. (Paul Kropp, 1996). Writing, disbelieve it or not, is continuous in your daily life. Whether making a shopping list, comprising an electronic message, or just doing your schoolwork, there is no escape from writing. In my case, however, writing came to be my only recovery for righteousness. On an apparently ordinary, stress-free, fall day in Afghanistan, I found myself running down the street on the Forward Operating Base of Salarno where I spent my fourth tour overseas. It goes without saying that writing was next to the last thing on my mind as I was talking with friends and keeping a steady pace. As things seem to do, my priorities were about to severely change. As the Base was attacked by three men in an open field, I was knocked back by one single rocket hitting a nearby building. As I opened my eyes I saw...

Case Summary for Gillette

...Gillette is a company popularly recognized for its razors and blades and as a pioneer in wet-shaving technology. Even with stiff competition, it holds a commanding share in the worldwide market. The company has been long known for its innovative products and marketing strategy. The company continues to grow slowly all over the world. With emerging technologies in the razor and blade industry and increasing customer reluctance to pay a higher price, it is definitely a challenge for Gillette to sustain its strategic position in the market. Since its inception in 1901, Gillette enjoyed a strategic position in razor and blade market with its innovative products with no serious competition until 1962, when Wilkinson Sword introduced its stainless steel blade. After 1962, Sword-Schick became Gillette’s primary competitor. Over the years both Gillette and Schick focused on improvements in razors and each of them introduced their own line of products. When Gillette introduced Mach3 (3-bladed razor), Schick responded with its Quattro (4-bladed razor). Gillette has always been known for its innovation and the peak of its innovation occurred in 2006 with the introduction of the Fusion 5-bladed razor. Schick is yet to respond to Fusion. Now under the ownership of Proctor & Gamble, Gillette faces a saturated US market that fluctuates only when new products are introduced. Going back to the way Gillette Company was founded; in 1895 King Camp Gillette had a brilliant idea when he was shaving...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Malala Yousafzai

...It is true. The extremists are trepidacious of pens and books. The puissance of inculcation frightens them.” Here, the well-kenned commonplace “The pen is mightier than the sword” is utilized to move the argument to its next stage: Extremists are trepidacious of edification. The technique used is epicrisis, where a widely accepted commonplace or maxim integrates weight to an argument built upon it. “They are afraid of women. The power of the voice of women frightens them. This is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta. And that is why they kill female teachers. That is why they are blasting schools every day, because they are afraid of change and the equality that we will bring to our society.” Having earlier set the argument that extremists are trepidacious of inculcation, Malala then builds that argument to demonstrate the...

...A pen (Latin penna, feather) is a writing implement used to apply ink to a surface, usually paper, for writing or drawing. Historically, reed pens, quill pens, and dip pens were used, with a nib dipped in the ink. Ruling pens allow precise adjustment of line width, and still find a few specialized uses, but technical pens such as the Rapidograph are more commonly used. Modern types also include ballpoint, rollerball, fountain, and felt or ceramic tip pens.[1] Contents | The main modern types of pens can be categorized by the kind of writing tip or point: A mark made on paper with a rollerball pen, and the tip of that pen * A ballpoint pen dispenses viscous oil-based ink by rolling a small hard sphere, usually 0.7–1.2 mm and made of brass, steel or tungsten carbide.[2] The ink dries almost immediately on contact with paper. The ballpoint pen is usually reliable and inexpensive.[citation needed] It has replaced the fountain pen as the most common tool for everyday writing. * A fountain pen uses water-based liquid ink delivered through a nib. The ink flows from a reservoir through a "feed" to the nib, then through the nib, due to capillary action and gravity. The nib has no moving parts and delivers ink through a thin slit to the writing surface. A fountain pen reservoir can be refillable or disposable, this disposable type being an ink cartridge. A pen with a refillable reservoir may have a mechanism, such as a piston, to draw ink from a bottle through the nib, or it may...

...identity? Would it be Aguinaldo or Mabini? If there is a need to place someone as national hero then who should we pick between those huge names? It is always said in many cultures that the pen is mightier than the sword, the blood of academic scholars are better than that blood of warriors, wars are not won in the battlefield, it’s pure politics. The name Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio are some of the well-known personalities that have been mentioned in the annals of Philippine history. The exemplary deeds that they had done for our country; in order to achieve freedom from the hands of the Spanish colonizers is worth to be remembered specially by the present generation. Indeed, their heroism is well done. Apparently, there are some students, faculty, leftist, writers, critics and even we perhaps questioned the credibility of Rizal when he got the title of being our “Philippine National Hero” why not Bonifacio which results to the existence of pro-Bonifacio and anti-Rizal or pro-Rizal and anti-Bonifacio. The comparison of these two personalities and made endless debate of who should be our national hero is much discussed in the environment of academe. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio opted for different courses of action.  Rizal fought against the friars with the use of his pen. Bonifacio advocated for revolution. According to author Renato...

Something More for Less

...Books are a dying breed. Bookstores are becoming harder to find, and less books are being sold. Movies and TV shows are becoming more popular; ideas for these movies are from books which most people seem to forget. People would rather sit through a movie theater, where they spent 40 dollars on tickets and food to watch a two hour movie, when they could read the same story for only 10 dollars in the comfort of home. With books, we don’t have to wait to for commercials to be over see what happens just turn the page. Also we are able to find out more in the story line that the writers of the movie left out. This means books are always better than the movie. March 23, 2012 was the released date of The Hunger Games the movie. Anyone who saw the movie would say it was one of the greatest movies made that year. It won the Teen Choice Award for the Choice Movie: Sifi/Fantasy. It won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie. This movie if it was not a book first, would be a flawless movie. Like most movies written from a book, this movie has flaws. In the book, the tributes are remade into Wolf Mutts during the final hour of the game. Wolf Mutts were wolves the size of horses and blood thirsty. They also acted like humans in every way. They had the faces of the fallen tributes because that was who they were. This was meant to scare the remaining tributes. In the movie, they only had the eyes of the fallen tributes. When I saw the movie, I was disappointed. This...

The poem starts and ends with the same lines "between my finger and my thumb & The squat pen rests" but the first stanza ends with "as snug as a gun" and the last stanza ends with "I'll dig with it." Thus, Heaney foregrounds the importance of the writer's profession and craft by breathing new life into the cliche idiom "the pen is mightier than the sword." Heaney affirms that he has decided to choose his own career path, as a writer. It is clear that Heaney feels confident that he is very skilled with a pen and demonstrates and proves that he is an accomplished poet by writing this very thought provoking poem. The title "Digging" is usually defined as an act of hard labor. It awakens our curiosity for we want to know the reasons why he is digging and what he is digging for.The poem basically describes his father digging potato drills and the grandfather cutting turf,"By God, the old man could handle a spade,Just like his old man." I Have a Dream

...A Dream That Is Still Coming True After studying the Emancipation Proclamation and segregation is high school, I know a little bit about black suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. However, Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “I Have a Dream” puts it into perspective just a little bit better. No one truly knows the severity of a situation until they hear it from a primary source. If I had to pick one quote to sum up what I learned, I would have to choose, “It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.” Learning about segregation in my high school was very different from reading about it in this speech. I went to a mostly white high school with very few minorities. Of course we touched on the subject and discussed how it was awful but there was no one to put emotion into it. There was no one to make us see just how unfairly African Americans were treated. Being from a small, slightly Southern town, I think I was stripped of the opportunity to become more familiar with black culture. That being said, I do think King’s speech was effective, however, the effects still haven’t reached some people. King had amazing intentions with this speech. He wanted nothing more than freedom and equal rights for African Americans. I do believe this speech was straight from the heart and sincere in every way. Personally, I think he was right in every way making this speech and saying things that no one had dared to say in public. No African American had been able...

Who Made Rizal Foremost National Hero

...Who Made Rizal Our Foremost National Hero, and Why? BY: ESTEBAN A. DE OCAMPO Dr. Jose Rizal Mercado y Alonso, or simply Jose Rizal (1861-1896), is unquestionably the greatest hero & martyr of our nation. The day of his birth & the day of his execution are fittingly commemorated by all classes of our people throughout the length & breadth of this country & even by Filipinos & their friends abroad. His name is a byword in every Filipino home while his picture adorns the postage stamp & paper money of widest circulation. No other Filipino hero can surpass Rizal in the number of towns, barrios, & streets named after him; in the number of educational institutions, societies, & trade names that bear his name; in the number of persons, both Filipinos & foreigners, who were named "Rizal" or "Rizalina" because of their parents’ admiration for the Great Malayan; & in the number of laws, Executive Orders & Proclamations of the Chief Executive, & bulletins, memoranda, & circulars of both the bureaus of public & private schools. Who is the Filipino writer & thinker whose teachings & noble thoughts have been frequently invoked & quoted by authors & public speakers on almost all occasions? None but Rizal. And why is this so? Because as biographer Rafael Palma (1) said, "The doctrines of Rizal are not for one epoch but for all epochs. They are as valid today as they were yesterday. It cannot be said that because the political...
