The Pequot War lasted from 1836 to 1837. The most famous incursion was the Massacre at Mystic (History.com, 2010). The Massacre at Mystic is a defining moment in history and in the Pequot War. The Pequot War was fueled by cultural, economic, and political changes in the region ("The Battlefields of the Pequot War", 2016). The Pequot flourished in the region of southeastern Connecticut in the early 17th century. The Pequot tribe was 8,000 strong over many territories. This number dwindled to about 4,000 after a small pox epidemic between 1633 and 1634. The Dutch arrived in 1611, and formed an amicable relationship with the Pequot. Puritans, and English encroachment began to take its toll on the relationship. Native tribes that opposed the Pequot became allies with the English. Skirmishes began to take place in the 1630 with the Pequot killing English traders. The famous massacre at Fort Mystic occurred on May 26th, 1637. Puritans and their native allies marched to the Pequot village and attempted to infiltrate the inner area of the village. Soon they would have to withdraw. They surrounded the burning village and killed any Pequot that attempted to leave. In 1 hour about 400 Pequot lay dead.
