What this report is about:
This report is about the difference and similarities of Perkins and Antony James. I will be talking about job roles from different functional areas from each business, comparing the roles and responsibilities within each role and talking about the similarities and differences. The second part of this report will be analyzing how the structure of each job roles affects the job roles within the business.
Why I chose these businesses:
I chose Perkins engines because it had a hierarchical structure and I knew if I chose a contrasting business that had a flat structure (Antony James) I would have a good comparison of Jobs and functional areas.
What Perkins is:
Perkins Engines are a PLC company which make Engines, they are owned by Caterpillar which is also a PLC company (CAT). The purpose of Perkins is to provide a service to customers, make a profit and expand. PLC is a company with shares, PLC stands for Public Liability Company and at the age of 18 a person can buy a share and be a share holder. Advantages of having a PLC company is that it can raise a lot of money by selling on the stock market and they have a limited liability. CAT is a arcadia and umbrella company, being an umbrella company means that the they are the owners of very small businesses e.g Rapisarda and X part are call sister companies (A company which is owned by the same parent company as another company) to Perkins. There are no local competitors for Perkins in Peterborough, but the national competitors are Cummins Marine and Detroit Diesel Corp. Perkins are in the secondary sector which means they buy their materials and make the engines and then proceed on to sell them and make a profit.
What Antony James is:
Antony James is a hair and beauty stylist. The business is privately owned by Antony James, he opened up the business in 2003. He is a sole trader which means he owns the business himself, there are advantages of owning a business such as not being able to expand to a big scale as there is only one owner and the size of the business, disadvantages would be such as the business being unlimited and if he fell in to debt he would have his personal belongings taken including his business till he could pay back.

A individual working for Perkins in the human resources department would have a clear understanding of Perkins objectives, and be able to devise and implement policies, also they should be able to retain the right staff needed to meet Perkins objectives. A HR professional would be dealing with staff welfare as well as administration duties, along with strategy and planning, At Perkins a individual would be working closely with various departments, increasingly in consultancy role, assisting the line managers to understand and implements policies and procedures. This individual would promote equality and diversity as part of the culture and organisation. As Perkins is a engine making company a HR worker would have to consult and make aware a wide range of people of health and safety. Recruiting staff is a important role, the worker should be well aware of the person specification and make sure the job description fits the chosen candidate perfectly and the candidate can offer the business skills other candidates did not posses, also recruiting staff would include preparing job adverts, checking application forms, shortlisting, interviewing and then finally selecting the candidate. Undertaking regular salary reviews is also a responsibility of a worker in the HR department, this is important because without this the right amount of salary may not be given to the right person, due to Perkins being at such a large scale there are many ranks of workers, from directors to managers and managers to assistant managers and so on, eg a manager will be earning more then a worker who is working for the manager, this is because the manger has more work to do. Negotiating with staff and managers, eg issues relating to pay and conditions. A HR worker would be in charge of all this in a team. Similarities between Antony James (administration) and a HR worker is that they both look after the employees, Antony him Self recruits the best possible workers that would boost revenue for his business and a worker would do the same for Perkins, he/she would attain the best possible candidate. It is Antony's job for the welfare and safety of his employees and would make sure that all four of his employees including him self were aware of the health and safety procedure, as a Perkins HR worker would make sure the men/women working with engines was aware of the procedures. But the difference would be the scale these two workers work on, a HR worker would be in charge of lots of people in a building but as for Antony he would be in charge of 4.
A marketing department worker working at Perkins is responsible for promoting and driving the sales of Perkins services and goods. A worker will focus on customers and spend time listening to the prospective of the customer in order to understand their needs regarding either a engine or anything else. Monitoring the competition such as Detroit Diesel Corp by asking questions such as why do customers choose the competitors versus Perkins? What kind of customers do they serve and how Perkins can serve them. Creating new ideas for customer acquisition campaigns, new product promotions, a team along with the worker will be creating new ideas to help make revenue. Working with individual customers to get the best feedback possible is also a day to day job as this will help the company understand what they need to improve on. Neil would giving customers haircuts and be attaining feedback to improve on just as a marketing worker would be working with individual customers to get feedback on engines and how they could possibly make their experience better, another similarity is that a Perkins marketing worker monitors their competition, just as Neil does, Neil monitors who on the high street has the new styles and techniques, his competition would be a hair stylist at Toni&Guy, Paul Mitchells etc. the difference Is the competition monitored by Perkins is worldwide and Antony James is based in the area.
Antony James (owner) is part of the administration function, due to having a small business a department for individual functions would be a waste of money and time as it is a small business with 5 workers, Antony would be in charge of Paying his employees, and himself, he would be paying the bills himself. He would find the best employees to work for him and they would have to be unique and talented to meet his expectations, once he has recruited his team he is in charge of his salon, his daily jobs involve him giving customers the best service possible by him self and from his employees, he answers phone calls and books appointments himself. Difference Between the two workers at Antony James would be the fact Antony James is the owner and Neil is the worker, Antony does everything himself from paying bills to developing his salon, Neil is just a stylist and he works for Antony, similarities are that Antony him self gives hair cuts and he is much more experienced as well, he is well known for his hair cuts and styling.
A stylist working for Antony James (Neil) would be in charge of cutting hair, coloring, shampooing, hair styling and massage and scalp treatment. Neil would also be in charge of advising clients and customers. he would Analyze patrons' hair and other physical features to determine and recommend beauty treatment or suggest hair styles. Demonstrate and sell hair care products and cosmetics. Cut, trim and shape hair or hairpieces, based on customers' instructions, hair type and facial features, using clippers, scissors, trimmers and razors. Apply water, setting, straightening or waving solutions to hair and use curlers, rollers, hot combs and curling irons to press and curl hair. Keep work stations clean and sanitize tools such as scissors and combs. Comb, brush, and spray hair or wigs to set style. Develop new styles and techniques. Bleach, dye, or tint hair, using applicator or brush. Operate cash registers to receive payments from patrons. Update and maintain customer information records, such as beauty services provided.
Organisational structure:
The structure contributes to achieving the aims and objectives which are * Antony James - 'To provide with the most beautiful and relaxing salon hairdressing experience in Peterborough' making a profit is also his aim, making a profit means he can get the best quality products for his customers. * Perkins Engines - 'Aiming to be customers first choice to power the world'
For Perkins having such a big business means having functions evens out the work to the right departments, eg money issues will all be handled by finance. So for Perkins to be customers first choice they would have to be organised, they need to be on point with theit engines,
