Personal Narrative: A Personal Experience During A Clinical Rotation

The toughest situation that I have faced occurred during a clinical rotation. The morning began like any other. I set up for a hand debridement, and had some time before the case started. Suddenly, the nursing director burst through the door and urgently told me and my preceptor, Austin to come quick. Initially, I thought that another room needed help, but it turned out that a car crash victim was being rushed to surgery. Austin started telling me to grab extra gloves and gowns and instrument sets for an exploratory laparotomy. We hastily scrubbed in and started setting up as the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and others rushed into the room with a man not much older than me. I was standing there in disbelief at what was happening. I saw bags of blood ready for transfusion. It seemed like …show more content…
I knew that nothing could be done until the surgeon had a scalpel. While Austin was hurriedly removing instruments from their pans, I loaded a knife and handed it to the doctor. The man’s abdomen was cut all the way down the middle. I had some hemostats and a pile of sponges on the mayo stand, rapidly passing them both while taking away bloody sponges and throwing them into a kick bucket. Finally, Austin took over the mayo stand. I wanted to help, but was unsure how. I heard a wet thud and saw an organ lying on the table, a ruptured spleen that had been the source of his internal bleeding. Brain death had been declared. The surgeon started suturing lacerations on his head and wiping him clean. He was then wheeled out of the room to go to the ICU so that his parents could see him one last time. An organ procurement would soon follow. By donating his organs, he could engage in improving someone’s life even after death. My heart sunk as I realized what had just happened. As we were cleaning up the blood puddles and spattered equipment, I was trying to think of different ways that I could have

Leadership

...LEADERSHIP AND EXPECTATIONS: PYGMALION EFFECTS AND OTHER SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES IN ORGANIZATIONS Dov Eden Tel Aviv University The Pygmalion effect is a type of self-fulfilling prophecy (SFP) in which raising manager expectations regarding subordinate performance boosts subordinate performance. Managers who are led to expect more of their subordinates lead them to greater achievement. Programmatic research findings from field experiments are reviewed, and our present knowledge about the Pygmalion effect in the management of industrial, sales, and military organizations is summarized. A model is presented in which leadership is hypothesized to be the key mediator through which manager expectations influence motivation, effort, and performance. The subordinate self-efficacy, performance expectations, behaviors that comprise the Pygmalion Leadership Style are described. Besides creating the one-onone Pygmalion effect, additional ways for managers to assert their leadership by creating productive organizationwide SFP are suggested. An agenda for research on SFP applications is proposed. Expectations play an important role in determining leadership effectiveness. Scholars and practitioners have assumed for a long time that leaders who expect more get more (e.g., Likert, 1961, 1967; McGregor, 1960). Despite this general awareness, until recently there was little empirical research illuminating how and why leader expectation effects operate...

Case Study-Promiscuity

...LIB-495-GS001 Abstract Paternal authority, according to the existing literature, is of upmost importance to the healthy psychosexual development of a child. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image. The woman uses transference in her intimate relationships as a desperate attempt to gain control of her life. Further research and use of psychometric testing with a large number of women suffering with promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior in correlation...
