Overall, I believe I was successful. I was able to refrain from caffeine for a much longer time than I thought I would have. I was also able to ignore the negative reactions I received and focus on the positives. On a less intense scale than a person who is addicted to drugs, I learned that the company and the support are imperative to being successful on the goals I set for myself.
In regards to the biologically changes, I feel that I have better control over my sleeping habits. I sleep throughout the night and I am surprised that most days I do not need a nap throughout the day. I do not crave something hot as much as a used too. I actually try to avoid occasions that tea would be presented at the end of a meal, so I wouldn’t have to deal with the awkwardness of explaining myself. The first trimester of my pregnancy is near the end and I have notice how proud of myself I am. I was proud to tell my medical providers that I have been abstaining from caffeine for a school project and intend to continue the fast throughout my pregnancy. Although, this gives me a sense of accomplishment, I sensed the medical providers sense of relief and happiness for my decision as they continued to praise me. I cannot help but think how they would have reacted if I continued a habit that was medically proven to be harmful for the baby. One of the midwives told me that if I had a risky habit that I would no longer be eligible to receive services through their midwife program, since the pregnancy would be deemed as high risk. I wondered how tough that would have been for me, if I were addicted to cigarettes or other harmful drugs. If I knew any better I would not have admitted to it and tried to hide it.
Spiritually, I feel stronger. I feel good knowing that I do not need to depend on something to get me through the day or keep me awake. I also view this assignment to be one of my first sacrifices as a new mom. I would have liked to know what their beliefs were that caused them to either support or oppose the experiment. Although, I have an idea of reasons why, I would like to challenge them and discuss how their reactions affected my moral.
Yes, I will continue to change. At least until I give birth. I do not have intentions of changing for the rest of life, unless I get pregnant a lot for the next couple of years. I learned a lot about myself through this experiment and I felt that I was able to grow as a person and a professional from this
