Growing up with an autistic brother (who was previously diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome) has caused for my life to have some unforgettable moments, such as the time he punched me in the nose when I didn’t remember the name of a radio station. Sometimes I feel like a punching bag; and he’s a bomb about to explode. However, I’d rather him punch me than a stranger on the streets. I’ve taken death threats and the chair that he tried to throw at me. I’ve seen him at his worst moments, and I’ve also seen him at his best. Living with him, I’ve learned how to filter my thoughts and think before I speak. From the handprint on my cheek, now I know not to spread secrets about him. Sometimes I want to let my anger out like he does, but after cleaning

Mary and Max

...Len Hislop, a World War II veteran who lost his legs as a prisoner of war and has developed agoraphobia. One day, she decides to write a letter to someone living in New York City: by pure chance she chooses Max Jerry Horowitz (Philip Seymour Hoffman) from a telephone directory. Max turns out to be a morbidly obese 44-year-old whose various mental problems (including anxiety attacks and overeating) have left him unable to form close bonds with other people. Max decides to write back to Mary, and the two become friends. Over time, Mary's increasingly sensitive questions about the adult world give Max progressively worse anxiety attacks, and he is ultimately institutionalized. During his time there, Max is diagnosed with depression and Asperger syndrome. Now aware of why he has difficulty relating to other people, Max finds a new lease on life and resumes his correspondence with Mary. The two remain friends for the next two decades, keeping one another updated on various events in their lives. Mary (Toni Colette), inspired by her friendship with Max, becomes a psychologist and marries her childhood crush, an effeminate young Greek Australian man named Damien Popodopoulos (Eric Bana) who enjoys sewing but fears Mary's sexual advances. Max wins the New York lottery, using his winnings to buy a (literal) life-time supply of chocolate and then giving the rest away to his elderly neighbor, who wastes...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...

Drupal

...site • How to make your site truly interactive • How to customize the look of your site using themes • How to securely administer your Drupal 7 site In my 35-year career in the IT industry there have been very few technologies that have excited me as much as Drupal. I decided to write this book because my clients frequently ask how they could quickly get up to speed on the Drupal platform so that they could begin building rich and sometimes complex solutions. To address the need, I’ve taken all of my experiences of helping dozens of clients through the Drupal learning process and have embedded that knowledge and experience into this book. I hope you’ll walk with me as I take you through the journey of learning how to build rich and powerful web sites using Drupal 7. You’ll learn everything from installing Drupal to managing your site once you’ve completed it. If you stick with me along the path you’ll walk away with enough experience under your belt to quickly and easily create functionally rich and beautifully designed Drupal 7 sites on your own. Companion eBook Drupal 7 Drupal is one of the fastest-growing web development frameworks. It’s extremely powerful, capable of hosting high-traffic, high-security sites like whitehouse.gov as well as small business sites and storefronts. And now Drupal 7 offers even more powerful solutions with a more intuitive and easy-to-use interface. Whether you are designing a small site for a business, a non-profit, or just...
