I frantically moved my hand looking for my moms'... Had this doctor really told me I'm dying? Me? I'm a 17 year old girl who has dreams! Ambitions! Goals! And, now my entire life would be over.

"H-How long do I have?" I managed to push out the 5 words I thought I would never have to say.

"100 days. Maybe A day or two after but you have 100 days." She looked at me with sympathetic eyes'.

I turned to my mom who was bawling her eyes out, I felt horrible for her. I was her only child she had- The only person in the world she had. Dad walked out on us when I was 3, I never really found out why.

The car ride home was quite, mom kept her head forward not taking a single glance at her dying daughter.

"Mom... I'm gonna miss you.. Once I'm gone..."

Compare and Contrast: the Advantage of Narratives over Descriptive

...Lake” and Judy Brady’s “I want a wife”, both authors write on personal encounters they experienced. The author chooses two different methods of writing styles. E.B. White utilizes a nostalgic reflective descriptive piece, whereas Brady uses a more sarcastic narrative. Arguably both writers do a great job in their story telling skills. Both stories are respected and pleasing, yet similar but different at the same time. The authors’ choice of writing style is what gives one story more of an advantage to the other. Though descriptive and narrative essay have identical intent – to tell the reader a story- narratives are more effective in capturing the audience because the uses of different voices, they bring ideas into perspective and they are relatable. There are special components that both style of writing possesses. Narrative writing usually does not stress adjectives to give the physical details of characters, setting or events in the story. Nothing like descriptive writing, narrative writings are written in the first person in order to convey the author's attitudes, beliefs and memories. Narratives are conventional, while descriptive writings content often emphases on a single event, object or place. Occasionally, writers utilize narrative writing style to tell about the past or the future in broad terms. A narrative often reflects personal experience, clarifying what happened during some sort of incident. Narrative essay topics include recounting an experience where the learned...

Narrative for Lifespan Development

...Narrative of Adolescence Years Abstract This paper is a narrative of my adolescent years from twelve to eighteen. I label these years of awkwardness and pain off a hit show from the early nineties called, “The Growing Pains.” Similar to the characters in the show I struggled creating a personal identity and had difficulty blending in with societal norms. As a result I suffered from much insecurity, false conceptions of beauty, and depression. Up until writing this paper I felt these ideologies and feelings were better left in the past. However, I now understand these experiences shape my current beliefs and will affect my identity as a counselor. Therefore I must address these experiences and deal with them emotionally. As I relive these moments I will correlate my development with the research of the following theorist: Piaget, Erikson, and Seltzer. By showing correlation of my development with their theories I will prove many of experiences as an adolescence were typical of an American teenager. Looking into the mirror I was frustrated. Why isn’t my hair pretty? Other girls wear their hair straight. Why did mine always have to be braided? Why couldn’t I have a relaxer to smooth out my curls? I shook my head in frustration and began to look for the hot comb. On my first day of middle school I was going to look pretty like everyone else. I was going to have my hair straight and laid to the side. My mother usually kept the hot comb under the kitchen sink...

Personal Narrative

...Personal Narrative If someone was to ask me whom im more like my mother or my father? I would immediately say my mother. Im constantly told im a”mini Chrissy” and when I was much younger I would cringe at hearing that, but now I understand why were really exactly the same. From our voices to the shape of our noses I am clearly my mothers daughter. And don’t even get me started on our personalities it’s like having a clone or looking in the mirror, scary to think how similar we are. But that shifted quickly of course we still had the same little button nose and our voices were identical but her fun side seemed to go out the window. It was July of 1999 and God seemed to have another plan for my family. A plan that none of us were on board for. Today when I think about the month of July a million things instantly come to my mind. I could make a list of all the good and an even longer list of all the bad. Lets start with the bad, why not just cut to the chase? July 19th 1999 I could remember this day in my sleep. We were at Westchester Country Club and it felt like I had the world at my fingertips. And for a four year old that was pretty grand. I was wearing my favorite green Lilly Pulitzer bathing suit with a matching green cover up I felt like the coolest chick around and no one was about the bring me down. Until my Aunt came running down to the baby pool pointing her finger at me, making me feel as though she was accusing me of doing something wrong, but that wasn’t...

...Personal Narrative My senior year of High School, I had my mind set on where I was going to college: The Art Institute in Dallas to be a fashion designer. Everyone told me not to go, that I wouldn’t make it a month and wouldn’t be long before I was back home. I was determined to prove my family wrong. My parents and I took a trip to Dallas for a campus tour. I loved every minute of the tour, but on the way home my mom told me that if I wanted to go to school there, I would have to raise the money on my own. After I graduated, I decided to take some side courses like Art and Photography while working to raise the money. Because I was unsure of which career path I wanted to study in school, after two years of working for my family company, they decided it was time for me to look for a job and stop pursing school. At the age of 20 I started working for Cato’s a women’s clothing company, about a year into working there I was named first assistant and no longer thought about going to school or raising the money to go. Just being stuck in a dead end job for the rest of my life. I started drinking and not caring about anything or anyone. This attitude went on for about a year and half, until one Sunday morning my pastor was talking about starting your life over no matter how deep you were. In the middle of the service I realized what I was doing and that I was not only hurting myself, but everyone around me and that I need to stop. I ran out of the service crying. Jenni the pastor’s...

...Literacy Narrative 9/5/2013 Real Life vs. Fantasy..... Looking back, I remember when I was in fourth or fifth grade and my teacher told us we were reading a book and doing a book report on it. I was always up for anything, but when she started reading the book each day I found myself not even listening to what she was saying. I would be thinking about all of the other things I’d rather be doing. Then, we were to write a book report on it. “What?” “...a book report?” No way was I going to write a paper on something that couldn’t keep my attention. I believe at that time I had probably read the first and last chapter and vaguely put together bits and pieces I heard the teacher read throughout the entire book. From that point on I knew I was going to have trouble reading books. Every time I heard a teacher say, “book report” I’d cringe! Needless to say, I probably didn’t get a very good grade on my book report. In middle school, one of the books we were assigned to read was Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I was unable to connect with the book just from reading the title and to make matters worse it takes place during the Great Depression. I’ve always visualized that being a very depressing, difficult time and because of that I don’t particularly like that time period. Day after day, we’d read this book and I specifically remember not looking forward going to class because it was ‘reading day’ and I hated it. We finally finished the book and my teacher said...

Personal Narrative Mckyla Grissinger

...Personal Narrative Mckyla Grissinger This is a story about how I fell multiple times over and over. One bright sunny day where the weather seemed perfect and there was no wrong in the world. Me and my brother Tristin were hanging out then we decided to go talk with our mom about finally getting longboards after a long discussion she agreed. We received the longboards as a late Christmas present very pricy present but an amazing present at that. We went to a skate shop about twenty minutes from our home and picked out two longboards; mine was one that kind of resembles a surfboard and my brothers that reminds me strangely of a platypus. We tried them out in the store then I found out I stink at skating and my brother was surprisingly good....

...Kristine Alpurado Professor Melodia English 100: College Writing 02/15/2016 Homework #1 “Looking for Work” p. 22 Engaging the Text, q. 1-5 1. The narrator is so attracted to the family life depicted on TV because they live a perfect life and that is exactly what he wants. One thing he feels that is wrong with his life is his family’s appearance. He believes if they improved their looks they would be accepted by others such as white people. This has little impact on his family because they realize life is not perfect and they are not in control of certain things. The family realizes they do not have to change in order to be liked by others as long as they have each other to love. 2. At first, the narrator goes looking for work because he wants to be wealthy. He believed that being wealthy would take away all his family’s problems. At the end of the story, the narrator starts to accept the fact that he cannot change the way his family is. The meaning of work has changed because he realizes he wants to work for the right reasons not just because he feels obligated to fix his family. 3. Soto’s family life was not perfect, but he lived in a stable household with people he loved. Soto’s thinking was wrong because he wanted more in life however, he failed to realize that he was lucky and fortunate enough to have the people he loves most close to him. Personal Narrative: A Short Story

...Personal Narrative I think we were all nervous. So nervous, we were pacing around. Back and forth, back and forth. Walking around the cement edges of the landscaping, Sidney and I didnt know what to do. We were scared just like everyone else. We didn’t know what to do or what to think. We were all just impatiently waiting in the outside courtyard, eyes glued to the door inside the window. We were waiting for the door to open. Everyone in the family was scared how much it would change things and if she would even be able to support her own decisions. Finally, the door opened. A nurse walked out with a blob. We were to far away to see, but it was a wet bloody, squirmy little blob. The nurse set the blob in the scale as it continued to squirm. We were to far away to tell how it went. The nurse picked the wigilling blob back up and walked back in the room. We were plastered to the window, fogging up the glass with our breath, so eager to see as much as we could. Realizing we would have to wait, we walked back inside and sat anxiously on the couch. The dad came out into the waiting room with the biggest smile and tears running down his face. Happy to hear all went well, my younger sister and I were officially aunts. Chelsea is my...

A World Divided

...people visiting the island, or to get away from the hardship and stress of their everyday lives. As for me, I saw the poverty of Nassau, Bahamas. Desperate people crowded the straw market and stared across the bridge at Atlantis where vacationers slept in Mahogany furnished rooms with luxurious bedding. Why did the residents have to live the way they do, sleeping on dirt floors? Into the night, the brilliant lights of Atlantis became a world miles away, but out of grasp. We approached the market eager to do some local shopping. Hundreds of vendors brought everything they created to start their marketing line. We live in the U.S., where items are ready-made and disposable, and, if something breaks, we buy a new one. I began thinking about my Michael Kors sunglasses that I had broken on the boat and how I was going to order a new pair when I arrived home. This venue, this world I walked into, was a world that required thought and imagination, of taking the very least commodity they had and turning it into a marketable item to sell, not for the latest technological device or new shoes, but to put food on the table. It humbled me immensely. Louis 2 I approached an elderly man, who looked to be about eighty years old. He dressed in modest clothes, dirty and completely barefoot, took the dried corn shucks from his field and weave them tenderly into beautiful flowers and intricate baskets. Endlessly, he laid each piece of corn stalk in its appropriate place, and I felt the pride...

Leadership

...Chapter Four Creating my embodied knowing In being a leader Chapter Four connects my learning from experience, the creation of my embodied knowing as a leader, my integration of ideas from the literature on leadership and my support for individuals to develop their capacities as I discover and manage resources to support visions of an improved educational system. I conclude by emphasizing the importance of my knowledge-creation in my professional practice as a Superintendent of Schools and by asking and answering the question: Why is there no simple or even complex answer to “what is educational leadership?” In the rhythm of the work, my efforts are often full of risk, sometimes disastrous, at which point I fall back, renew my energy and with my recognized tenacity, try another route. I will reveal as well how I carry that spirit, that life-affirming energy (Bataille, 1962; Whitehead, 1999) embodied in my whole being with a passion and internal power to effect good. Feminist Barbara Du Bois (1983) writes of "passionate scholarship" as being "science-making, which is rooted in, animated by and expressive of our values" (p. 113) (Belenky, et. al., 1986, p. 141). One of the reasons I can accomplish as much as I do is that the work and the relationships appear to be many and complex but because they are inter-related and connected they provide a synergy that produces results in numbers of seemingly different and unrelated focus areas. I find that as I am supporting...

Research Paper

...INTRODUCTION Purpose/Justification Problems related to reading comprehension have been besetting both private and public educational institutions all over the country. In the Philippine setting evidences revealed that 2009, 2010 and 2011 NAT results exemplified that the second year students struggled much on reading comprehension as shown by the three mean percentage scores in English subject. In particular, the mean percentage scores of Macario B. Asistio Sr. High School—Unit I for the school years 2008-2009; 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 are 43.11, 36.57 and 36.60 respectively (Department of Educational Testing and Research Center, 2009; 2010; 2011). Likewise, comprehension related studies conducted locally have verified and supported that the students showed difficulty in reading comprehension (Columna, 2013; Ayles, 2009 and Dela Cruz, 2004). In a study conducted by Columna (2013), results revealed that the students were struggling to comprehended texts in their L2 with majority of them fall under instructional level and a significant of them fall under frustration level. In the same manner, Dela Cruz (2004) found that the students in the secondary level have difficulties in reading materials in the content areas especially in Mathematics and Science. The researcher posits that these comprehension problems have rooted from the questioning pedagogical strategy employed by the teachers. Chin (2002) found that questions, particularly those asked in response to wonderment, stimulate...

The Flight from Conversation

...generations are completely relying on social media and handheld devices to basically communicate for them. Humans have become so reliant on technology that we have begun to socially isolate ourselves from face-to-face interactions. Communicating to one another in person is extremely important, users of technology know this yet continue to ignore that fact and decide to use technology as a quicker form of communication. In The New York Times op-ed by Sherry Turkle “The Flight From Conversation,” Turkle talks about how hand held devices are taking over face-to-face interactions and conversations. Turkle grabs the readers attention with her own narrative, then turns quickly to people she has studied and their personal experiences. Turkle believes that technology is completely taking over the way humans communicate entirely, I agree with this because looking around campus or on social media it is clear that this generation, and the upcoming generations are not only turning to technology to communicate and build relationships for them but they are causing themselves to be in their own isolation, putting their children's mental health at risk, and putting their privacy and safety at risk. In Turkle's op-ed she claims that hand held devices are not only changing what people do, but also who they are....

Allan Poe

...Comics as Archives: MetaMetaMaus Hillary Chute | University of Chicago Abstract: In the view of some critics, the form of comics is a locus of the archival, a place where we can identify an archival turn. Art Spiegelman’s Maus first and perhaps most forcefully established the connection between archives and comics. His groundbreaking work documenting his father’s experience in WWII Poland, where he survived internment in Auschwitz, is a visual narrative based on oral testimony that consistently heightens our awareness of visual, written, and oral archives, and where they interact, overlap, or get transposed one into the other. Hillary Chute recounts and interprets her collaboration with Spiegelman in the process of assembling MetaMaus, a book compiling interviews and archival materials on the making of Maus. MetaMaus, argues Chute, reflects the tension between different kinds of extant archives—oral, written, photographic—and the cross-discursive work of (re)building new archives that motivates Maus. Its defining feature is that it shows the materiality of Spiegelman’s archive; it is about the embodiment of archives. The subject of Maus is the retrieval of memory and ultimately, the creation of memory…. It’s about choices being made, of finding what one can tell, and what one can reveal, and what one can reveal beyond what one knows one is revealing. Those are the things that give real tensile strength to the work—putting the dead into little boxes. – Art Spiegelman (MetaMaus...

Education in Australia is very different to where I come from; it requires selflearning and self-reflection for overall development and self-improvement. Obviously the word “self” is important in education in Australia and from this perspective learning has become so much more real and enjoyable. One of the main reasons to choose English Writing is to express my thoughts, opinions and arguments in writing which I have never been encouraged to do before. Over the course of study I have developed various skills learnt different literary techniques and increased my vocabulary. This course is a very good platform for me to prepare myself for university, but I have been allowed to have an opinion...
