Roots grow deep in the earth. They can be traced back hundreds of years, being a constant in an ever-changing world. They can provide growth to the smallest of ideas or the largest of theories, transporting knowledge up phloems and xylems. Roots can remind us of our beginnings, they can bring us back to our fundamentals when we seem lost in a whirlwind of complexities. Whenever my life gets convoluted and I feel like my goals have been mixed up in a jumble of busyness, I like to sit down and remember where they came from. My parents have told me stories of how I would sing and dance around the living room before I was old enough to remember. I took my first dance class at the age of 3, at the local community centre. While the other kids came in shorts and t shirts, I showed up in a blue velour leotard and a sequined tutu. I wanted to be taken seriously. My passion for ballet grew, taking classes ever since then with the same teacher who taught the community center classes. I have branched out beyond ballet, dabbling in almost everything from tap to song and dance, which actually stemmed another passion of mine. Musical theatre. I have always fancied the idea of singing, dancing and acting at the same time. I did my first musical three years ago, when I was 15. Immediately I fell in love with it, and I seriously considered it as a career until recently. Musical theatre and Broadway culture have become more than a hobby for me, they consume every moment of spare time that I have, whether I’m rehearsing for the show I’m in or watching videos of new musicals having recently opened on the Great White Way. To be honest, this had me taken aback, as we do live in the 21st century. Admittedly, we as women are farther along than we were 100 years ago, but this shouldn’t be enough. Upon discovering the depth of this imbalance, I started to become aware of gender equality and feminism. At first, it was just something I kept in the back of my mind, however has now grown and shaped my being to become what I believe to be an advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the rights of other marginalized groups. In recent developments, I have decided to pursue the study women and gender in post-secondary, if I am so lucky, and hope to make a difference on a much larger
