Personal Narrative: My Classroom Procedures

Classroom Procedures My classroom procedures will be based off of the studies of Dr. Harry Wong, Dr. Fred Jones, and Dr. Rick Lavoie. The room will be organized and structured, and procedures will be clearly demonstrated for the students. The procedures will be taught and re-taught, and will stay consistent throughout the entire year. Student will know the procedures so well that they will become habit. The students will know exactly how to behave in any situation. By following the doctor’s research I will have a more efficient, less disordered classroom. My students will have a safe and anxiety free environment.

Larger assignments, like essays, projects and tests, will be given back to students within a week of them being turned in. Graded homework will be placed on the daily assignment desk, so that students can put it in their backpacks before they are hung up for the day. The larger essays, tests, and projects will be given back on an individual basis, near the end of the day in case of any questions. Materials: Most materials will be placed on the assignment table for students to pick up as they enter the door. Any materials that are not left out mean that they are important enough to be passed out. Papers like rubrics and big project assignments would be personally passed out. That way I inform students how important this assignment is, and enforce that I handed this particular paper out to everyone in class. Any other materials that students might want, like highlighters, markers, colored paper, ect, will be passed out by designated …show more content…
Those students that have an excused absences will be able to pick up their missing work, (their name will have been written at the top), at the absent work station, by the homework table at the beginning or end of class. Students with the excused absences will be given an additional day to turn in any the homework. Unexcused absences will depend on the type of assignment/ direction that the student has missed. Daily assignments, quizzes and participation points cannot be made up and will result in a zero. However, for the large assignments, essays, projects, and tests students must take responsibly to check with the teacher for individual explanation and retakes.

Late Work: I understand that there are forces outside of a middle school student’s life that might interfere with finishing homework. Therefore, students will have until I leave for the day to turn in an assignment for full credit. They will then be given one additional day to turn in the homework with an automatic 10% deduction. After the second day, only extreme extenuating circumstances will be taken into account. There will be a few extra credit opportunities throughout the year for students to make up any points they might have missed; but laziness or apathy will not be acceptable in my classroom.

The research was originally framed in a constructivist epistemology, but was also informed by an emancipatory interest. The main methods used for data gathering were participant observation, interviewing, and a written response survey (CES, Tobin, 1993a). It was found that, even though the students viewed the class positively, and described themselves as highly motivated to learn, the level of cognitive engagement was affected by two interrelated factors: the control the teacher had over almost all activities, and student beliefs about learning in this context. The data suggests that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation which could lead to deep involvement in learning are constrained by a preponderance of teacher-centred methods of instruction. A model is proposed relating intrinsic and extrinsic interest to cognitive engagement. It is concluded that more activities should be used which either implicitly or explicitly reinforce positive beliefs about the need for self-direction in learning.
